October 16, 20222 yr Creep <3 great song although I get why Radiohead didn't play it in forever Heart Shaped Box, I remember being a tad disappointed when it came out, obviously In Utero is not Nevermind part 2 not a fan of Go West, their cover of Always on my mind was genius, one of the best covers in the history of music but this was not, rather the opposite
October 17, 20222 yr 'Go West' always grated on me but recently I've softened my opinion towards it and rather enjoy it.
October 28, 20222 yr Author 25TH SEPTEMBER An almighty tussle at the top of the charts this week with the top three all finishing within 3,000 copies of each other. To the victor the spoils and the number one spot and celebrating this week are DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, their “Boom! Shake The Room” leapfrogs the opposition 3-1 selling 52,000 in the process, it is the first chart topper on the Jive label since Billy Ocean back in 1986 and the first US chart topper since Shaggy back in March. 4AVWZwZq_QU The midweek chart topper however was by the Pet Shop Boys, “Go West” started off brightly opening a good lead which eroded as the week progressed and it ended up merely 500 copies adrift of Jazzy and Fresh in the end, it narrowly fails therefore to become their fifth chart topper but their attention will turn to the release of their next album “Very” in a fortnight. Outgoing chart topper “Mr Vain” ends up in third place though it sold a respectable 49,000 last week, it was doubtless impacted by the release of their album “Serenity” which, though it enters at a lowly No 56, diverted precious sales from the single and probably cost it a fifth week. Just last February we saw three new entries inside the top 10 for the first time, this week we see chart history created again as FOUR songs all debut inside the top flight! The highest new entry debuts at No 4 (25,000) and it’s a return for M People who grab a third top 10 single in 1993. Their album “Elegant Summing” is out next month but “Moving On Up” is instantly their biggest hit but has a big gap to bridge if it is to move up the charts on this occasion. UyfDnsDQcfI Their last single “Tease Me” peaked at No 3 after selling a mighty 365,000 copies and proved so popular that it had to be deleted by the record company to make way for the new Chaka Demus & Pliers single “She Don’t Let Nobody”. The latter disk now moves 18-6 (22,000) in its second week to make the Jamaican duo one of the hottest acts around at present. The single is a cover of the 1981 Curtis Mayfield track and is featured on their album “Tease Me” which only spent three weeks in the chart making No 26 before disappearing. yxB7j2MITD8 Currently No 1 in Sweden and top 10 in a host of other countries Haddaway’s second release “Life” smashes straight in at No 8 (20,000) and bodes well for his debut album next month. With the release of a new Gabrielle single next week he’ll be hoping that there’s no re-run of their last collision when her single “Dreams” kept his “What Is Love” from the top spot for a fortnight. 1_v8DukjBm8 Scoring a second top 10 single in a calendar year for the first time in 9 years, Depeche Mode are back with “Condemnation EP” another cut from the “Songs Of Faith & Devotion” album. The band are currently in the US touring but will be back in time for Christmas, meanwhile that eighth top 10 single arrives at No 9 (18,000). bjG7MhfeQRA It’s been nearly 2 years since the last time we heard from the Wonder stuff, but they’ve busy recording a new album “Construction For The Modern Idiot” which finally hits the shops next month. First release “On The Ropes EP” is now their third straight top 10 single as it enters at No 10 (17,000) and is the perfect launch for the new era. The band are off on a tour of the US at Christmas in an attempt to break the market but all seems well with their UK career. oI-9E1dW-IQ SWV hold at No 5 (24,000) and Bitty McLean continues to head out 4-7 (20,000) completing our recap. 1- BOOM SHAKE THE ROOM- DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince (52,000) 2- GO WEST- Pet Shop Boys (51,500) 3- MR VAIN- Culture Beat (49,000) 4- MOVING ON UP- M People (25,000) 5- RIGHT HERE- SWV (24,000) 6- SHE DON’T LET NOBODY- Chaka Demus & Pliers (22,000) 7- IT KEEPS RAININ (TEARS FROM HEAVEN)- Bitty McLean (20,000) 8- LIFE- Haddaway (20,000) 9- CONDEMNATION- Depeche Mode (18,000) 10- ON THE ROPES EP- Wonder Stuff (17,000)
October 28, 20222 yr Author 2ND OCTOBER Its sales are up just 8% to 56,000 but it’s a much more comprehensive victory this week for DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince and “Boom! Shake The Room”. M People rise 4-2 but their sales of just 34,000 show just how fortunate that chart rise is and is much more evidence of the collapse in sales for last week’s challengers Pet Shop Boys 2-3 (32,000) and Culture Beat 3-5 (29,000) than any real upsurge in popularity for the song. The other song in the top 5 belongs to Chaka Demus & Pliers and their second top 5 single “She Don’t Let Nobody” which moves 6-4 (29,000). LppP51Vwv10 A rather more stable chart this week with just 2 new entries, first up are Frankie Goes To Hollywood who originally scored 7 top 40 singles including three No 1 hits between 1984 and 1987 before splitting. The group aren’t reforming but that’s not stopped ZTT re-issuing the catalogue in the form of a forthcoming new greatest hits album and a tenth anniversary release of “Relax” the song that started it all. It enters at No 6 (25,000) with a slew of new mixes to promote it. BA1KehUMBgs Gabrielle’s last single “Dreams” spent three weeks at No 1 on way to selling half a million, it’s time for the follow up and right away “Going Nowhere” arrives at No 9 (17,000) as a precursor to her debut album out in 4 weeks. That makes Gabrielle the first chart act (certainly since we went to a top 50 at least) to have their first two singles both debut in the top 10. Rivals back in June, Haddaway’s new single “Life” keeps ahead of her this time around by climbing 8-7 (24,000) but will it remain so? b8eDwculDQQ Following the terrestrial TV premiere of the film “Pretty Woman” last month the biggest single from its soundtrack has got a re-issue. Roxette’s “It Must Have Been Love” rises 12-10 (15,000) to become the first song to be a top 10 twice in the 90s without the aid of a remix or alteration. vxTP2P3ytOI SWV climb to No 2 in the US behind Mariah Carey but here they fall 5-8 (23,000). Next week sees the new Take That single enter the charts hotly tipped to enter at the top- can they do it again? 1- BOOM SHAKE THE ROOM- DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince (56,000) 2- MOVING ON UP- M People (34,000) 3- GO WEST- Pet Shop Boys (32,000) 4- SHE DON’T LET NOBODY- Chaka Demus & Pliers (29,000) 5- MR VAIN- Culture Beat (29,000) 6- RELAX- Frankie Goes To Hollywood (25,000) 7- LIFE- Haddaway (24,000) 8- RIGHT HERE- SWV (23,000) 9- GOING NOWHERE- Gabrielle (17,000) 10- IT MUST HAVE BEEN LOVE- Roxette (15,000)
October 28, 20222 yr I didn't know Go West was so close to being a number 1 in its second week. Maybe it would have got there if the Pet Shop Boys had been in the studio to perform the song when it was a new entry rather than just the video being shown.
October 28, 20222 yr Author 9TH OCTOBER Well they did it! Becoming the first act in 20 years to enter the charts at No 1 with consecutive singles and only the second act ever to pull the feat off, Take That debut at No 1 with “Relight My Fire”. It features vocals from Lulu (reprising a role originally performed by Loleatta Holloway) who has never had a chart topper until now (surprisingly) making her wait for a chart topper of 29 years and 148 days from debut the longest ever, and is of course a cover of the 1979 Dan Hartman song which failed to chart in the UK though it became something of a disco classic. It’s the second Hartman cover to be a top 10 in the last 3 years after Yell! took “Instant Replay” into the big hitters back in 1990. For Take That it marks an exceptional year with 3 top 2 singles and a No 2 album, their new LP “Everything Changes” is in shops in a fortnight and should confirm their positions as the biggest band in the UK at the moment. In case you’re wondering the only other group to score consecutive No 1 hits at debut were Slade. 40Od45DjCA4 “Relight My Fire shifted 90,000 copies in the last week a new highest weekly tally for the group, it comfortably outsold DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince by over 2:1 as “Boom! Shake The Room” trailed in with just 43,000 copies to its credit, and M People had a best yet weekly sale of 38,000 even though it drops 2-3. Indeed sales are up generally with the following tracks all sharing the bonanza: Chaka Demus & Pliers at No 4 (35,000 + 23%), Frankie Goes To Hollywood at No 5 (34,000 + 37%), and Haddaway at No 6 (26,000 + 10%). Meat Loaf has had quite a comeback this year with “Bat Out Of Hell II: Back Into Hell”, it’s been out for a month and has so far sold 200,000 as it moved 1-2-1-2. Naming the album as a sequel to one of the biggest selling albums of all time helped no doubt but even he has admitted that the two albums have nothing to do with each other! No matter it’s a success and now spawns a top 10 single with “I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)” which enters at No 8 (22,000) ending a 12 year wait for the star as he’s searched for a top flight hit in the UK. The female part here is performed by Lorraine Crosby though the promo features Dana Patrick as the female lead, and like the majority of his most successful work is penned by Jim Steinman, it runs to almost 12 minutes in the album version though the single edit comes in at just 7:52 thankfully. 9X_ViIPA-Gc Marketed as the UK answer to En Vogue, Eternal are an all female four piece from London who have chosen an obscure Glenn Jones 1990 flop single “Stay” as their first release. They seem to prove there’s worth in the single as it climbs 16-10 (17,000) and if you like what you hear then there is an album planned for Christmas. ajxCCRQC7ds Culture Beat fall 5-9 (20,000) as The Pet Shop Boys fall 3-7 (24,000) but they do score their first ever album chart topper with “Very” debuting at the top today, before that they were the act with the most No 1 singles without a No 1 album- odd but true. For Culture Beat their single has done its purpose as it ranks as one of the top 10 hits of the year and as we’re ¾ of the way through it here’s the YTD top 10: 1- ALL THAT SHE WANTS- Ace Of Base 601,000 2- (I CAN’T HELP) FALLING IN LOVE- UB40 599,000 3- NO LIMIT- 2 Unlimited 531,000 4- DREAMS- Gabrielle 513,000 5- OH CAROLINA- Shaggy 456,000 6- WHAT IS LOVE- Haddaway 434,000 7- MR VAIN- Culture Beat 389,000 8- FIVE LIVE EP- George Michael/ Queen/ Lisa Stansfield 378,000 9- YOUNG AT HEART- The Bluebells 375,000 10- I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU- Whitney Houston 369,000 Weekly sales 1- RELIGHT MY FIRE- Take That & Lulu (90,000) 2- BOOM SHAKE THE ROOM- DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince (43,000) 3- MOVING ON UP- M People (38,000) 4- SHE DON’T LET NOBODY- Chaka Demus & Pliers (35,000) 5- RELAX- Frankie Goes To Hollywood (34,000) 6- LIFE- Haddaway (26,000) 7- GO WEST- Pet Shop Boys (24,000) 8- I’D DO ANYTHING FOR LOVE (BUT I WON’T DO THAT)- Meat Loaf (22,000) 9- MR VAIN- Culture Beat (20,000) 10- STAY- Eternal (17,000)
October 28, 20222 yr Author 16TH OCTOBER To no-one’s surprise Take That & Lulu continue at No 1 but its sales are already in decline sharply as it loses 35% week on week to pull in 58,000 sales, attention and promotion shifting almost immediately to the album which is out this week. Not that that will necessarily deter sales and proof of that lies with Meat Loaf, his album “Bat Out Of Hell II” returns to No 1 for a third week in as many stints whilst his single “I’d Do Anything For Love” powers 8-2 (46,000) and doubles its sales, it is now the loaf’s biggest single. Former chart topper “Boom! Shake The Room” completes the top 3 as it continues its gentle decline 2-3 (33,000). JB_WXywv47Y The only new single in the top 10 comes from Iron Maiden and a live version of the song “Hallowed Be Thy Name” which featured on their 1982 album “The Number Of The Beast” becoming a firm fan favourite. Earlier this year the group released an album “A Real Live One” covering their work from 1986 to present, now they’re gearing up to release “A Real Dead One” which covers the pre 86 period via live recordings of the tracks during their tour in 92/93 and this cut is taken from that. It enters at No 9 (18,000) and is their 9th top 10 single in the last 5 years and 10th overall and marks the final appearance of lead vocalist Bruce Dickinson who is now leaving the band. _BFXCgm5270 Chaka Demus & Pliers spend a third frustrating week at No 4 (31,000) though they are in decline saleswise, M People drop 3-5 (31,000) and also see their second album debut at No 2 behind Meat Loaf, and Haddaway holds at No 6 (26,000). A good week for Eternal who move 10-7 (22,000) while Frankie Goes To Hollywood drop 5-8 (21,000), Pet Shop Boys fall 7-10 (16,000). 1- RELIGHT MY FIRE- Take That & Lulu (58,000) 2- I’D DO ANYTHING FOR LOVE (BUT I WON’T DO THAT)- Meat Loaf (46,000) 3- BOOM SHAKE THE ROOM- DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince (33,000) 4- SHE DON’T LET NOBODY- Chaka Demus & Pliers (31,000) 5- MOVING ON UP- M People (31,000) 6- LIFE- Haddaway (25,000) 7- STAY- Eternal (22,000) 8- RELAX- Frankie Goes To Hollywood (21,000) 9- HALLOWED BE THY NAME- Iron Maiden (18,000) 10- GO WEST- Pet Shop Boys (16,000)
October 28, 20222 yr Author 23RD OCTOBER It’s the Take That and Meat Loaf show this week with the two acts tussling for dominance on the single and album charts. Take That won the album battle, “Everything Changes” triumphing by some margin, whilst on the single charts Meat Loaf takes over. “I’d Do Anything For Love” climbs 2-1 (55,000) and was out in front from the off even if it has to really take off in the shops yet, for “Relight My Fire” it suffered another 51% sales slash in the wake of the album arriving to sell just 28,000, the first time in just over a year that only one song in any particular week breached the 30,000 mark. In fact just 8,000 copies separated No 2 and No 8 so that fall could have been much much worse. By way of Trivia Meat Loaf’s single becomes the longest single to make No 1 thanks to its almost 8 minute duration in its “short” form and takes the title from The Beatles “Hey Jude”. wk7eiZMySi8 Scoring a No 6 hit last time out with “U Got 2 Know” Capella see their new single “U Got 2 Let The Music” debut at No 7 (20,000). It contains sample of Alphaville’s “Sounds Like A Melody” and JM Silk’s “Let The Music Take Control” among others and will feature on their forthcoming album due early next year. gY7miql1OQY The new Prodigy single “One Love” was first released as a white label with the title “Earthbound” without their name as a response to criticism that they had sold out commercially. Allegedly once the dance fraternity discovered it was the group behind the track it stopped getting play but in any case it jumps 12-8 (20,000) to give them a fourth top 10 single and a good start to their second album campaign. bcxnbfRYM-g We first encountered Dina Carroll as a vocalist on the 1991 Quarts No 8 cover of Carol King’s “It’s Too Late”, she’s gone to have a solo career so far generating 5 top 30 singles though nothing made the top flight. Incredibly it looks like the sixth single from her debut solo album “So Close” entitled “Don’t Be A Stranger” will be the biggest hit from the set as it climbs 16-10 (17,000), it’s a cover of a track by Chyna and has been re-recorded with the London Session Orchestra for its single release but it will help to sell tickets for Carroll’s tour next month with Eternal supporting her. Carroll’s album has sold half a million since it peaked at No 2 on release in January this year and is back in the charts 38-23 this week. 4p9sRtijbR0 DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince hold at No 3 (26,000) whilst Carroll’s tour mates Eternal continue to climb 7-4 (23,000) overtaking M People who are stuck at No 5 (22,000). Chaka Demus & Pliers fall back 4-6 (22,000) and Haddaway dips 6-9 (18,000) as his album arrives at No 19. 1- I’D DO ANYTHING FOR LOVE (BUT I WON’T DO THAT) – Meat Loaf (55,000) 2- RELIGHT MY FIRE- Take That & Lulu (28,000) 3- BOOM SHAKE THE ROOM- DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince (26,000) 4- STAY- Eternal (23,000) 5- MOVING ON UP- M People (22,000) 6- SHE DON’T LET NOBODY- Chaka Demus & Pliers (22,000) 7- U GOT 2 LET THE MUSIC- Cappella (20,000) 8- ONE LOVE- The Prodigy (20,000) 9- LIFE- Haddaway (18,000) 10- DON’T BE A STRANGER- Dina Carroll (17,000)
October 28, 20222 yr Author BBC4 are not only cutting an episode out tonight BUT also showing three episodes so I'm still behind. Another one on the way.
October 28, 20222 yr Didn't know the Eternal song was a cover! same for Don't be a Stranger! but at least they covered songs no one knew Edited October 29, 20222 yr by Bjork
October 28, 20222 yr Author 30TH OCTOBER Having the No 1 single and album in the same week isn’t as common as you may think and was last achieved last April when Right Said Fred did the double, this week you can add Meat Loaf to that list. “Bat Out Of Hell II: Back Into Hell” returns to the top spot for a fourth non-consecutive week selling 400,000 copies already, in part that is to do with the success of lead single “I’d Do Anything For Love” which is No 1 for a second week selling a mightily improved 83,000 copies bringing its total to 206,000 copies. FJkWoGUIKT8 Cappella rise 7-2 (32,000) but they aren’t currently in the same league as Meat Loaf and won’t be catching him anytime soon. That leaves the way clear for our highest new entry which is straight into No 3 (26,000) and is best start ever for Bryan Adams who only has two previous top 10 singles in his long career. “Please Forgive Me” was recorded as a new track for inclusion on his forthcoming greatest hits album “So Far So Good” due next month, Adams lost his crown as biggest selling singles act of the 90s to Whitney Houston during 1993 but if this is a substantial hit he may regain it! EFX-vxU3oew Another act with a long chart history but getting his highest ever debut position is a certain Mr Phil Collins. His last album “But Seriously” sold over 2.5 million in the UK alone to date giving his new album “Both Sides” a lot to live up to, the first single “Both Sides Of The Story” debuts at No 7 (23,000) outdoing his No 9 debut of “Groovy Kind Of Love” five years ago. It’s Collins’ 10th or 11th top 10 hit depending on how you view the remix of “In The Air Tonight” in 1988. eaDLYdVdMm0 A slice of Dutch dance up next with duo Zki & Dobre who have sampled Sergio Mendes “Fanfarra” and “Maglenha” along with Sinnamon’s “I Need You Now” to give us the hit “Give It Up”. It made No 23 in August this year but continued to sell well after it left the charts and got a full re-issue just a month after it departed the charts this time shooting 21-9 (21,000) after finally being picked up by commercial radio. ydgjYFRQYCY Dina Carroll scorches 10-4 (25,000) as the only other climber to mention whilst her album also improves 23-15. DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince fall 3-5 (25,000) but they stay above Eternal who retreat 4-6 (24,000), Take That & Lulu hurtle 2-8 (21,000) and The Prodigy ebb 8-10 (16,000). 1- I’D DO ANYTHING FOR LOVE (BUT I WON’T DO THAT)- Meat Loaf (83,000) 2- U GOT 2 LET THE MUSIC- Cappella (32,000) 3- PLEASE FORGIVE ME- Bryan Adams (26,000) 4- DON’T BE A STRANGER- Dina Carroll (25,000) 5- BOOM SHAKE THE ROOM- DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince (25,000) 6- STAY- Eternal (24,000) 7- BOTH SIDES OF THE STORY- Phil Collins (23,000) 8- RELIGHT MY FIRE- Take That & Lulu (21,000) 9- GIVE IT UP- Goodmen (21,000) 10- ONE LOVE- The Prodigy (16,000)
October 28, 20222 yr BBC4 are not only cutting an episode out tonight BUT also showing three episodes so I'm still behind. Another one on the way. Only the 2 episodes shown so far (up to 2nd week of Take That). The 2 episodes after that are oldies from 1979 and 1987. So I think you are now 2 episodes ahead?? They seem to be repeating the 2 episodes later on according to my planner?

October 29, 20222 yr love Don't be a Stranger, haven't listened in like 20 years but just did a re-listen and what a great song it is! it was kinda crazy for her to have h it with the 6th single off the album, and album that had already sold lots and lots since the start of the year
October 29, 20222 yr Catching up… 'Heart-Shaped Box' is my favourite Nirvana single  shame that it was brushed over a bit on TOTP. On the other hand, 'Creep' is not quite my favourite Radiohead single but it was amazing to hear that nevertheless, still an easy highlight of recent shows. I didn’t know about that The Emotions connection for 'Dreamlover'! Of course Mariah had previously borrowed from their 'Best of My Love' for none other than… ‘Emotions’! Much preferring Meat Loaf at the top to the last couple of #1s. Also enjoying the dance from Cappella and The Prodigy in the top 10. 'Give It Up' wasn't familiar to me by name but just played that embed and could instantly recognise the production from being sampled in 'Fairground' by Simply Red!
October 29, 20222 yr What was the story behind Meat Loaf entering the charts after the album release?
October 29, 20222 yr Not sure there was a story as such? I just think they didn’t anticipate it would be such a hit
