It's a first week on top for a record that would have topped my hypothetical charts in 1964, probably, for Gigliola Cinquetti after Non Ho L'Eta won Eurovision and became a UK hit. So, justice at last and 58 years later it becomes the oldest recording to hit the top spot (though not the oldest chronological chart-topper that's still 1959's Oh Carol which topped my chart in 1972, an ancient 13 years later when I was 14. That would be like Just Dance topping my chart this year for the first time!), and quite right too, it's still lovely.

Harry Styles is up to 3 with Grapefruit, an album track getting no buzz at all. I'd like to see it do what Watermelon Sugar did - become a huge hit after going top 5 in my charts as an album track - and "grat" in the case of WS. Next single Late Night Talking is up to 5, the 7th top 10 for Harry, including 2 number 1's. Nerina Pallot gets a first top 10 since 2016's Rousseau, and her 11th in total since 2005. Highest new entry is Stevie Nick's banging solo early 80's goodie, I Can't Wait - which peaked at 14 in 1986 originally, for me, but which deserved much better, so here's a second go around 36 years on.

Kate Bush makes it a 3rd go inside the top 40 with Running Up That Hill, number 1 in 1985, and again in 2012 following the London Olympics. Mark Owen gets the highest new record entering 34, You Only Want Me is his first solo entry since 2013's Stars, and first top 40 since 2003's number 1 Four Minute Warning. He has, of course, had loads of hits with Take That, some he wrote, some he didn't, over the last 30 years, most recently Everlasting in 2019.

Foals return for a 5th chart entry in 10 years, the retro 2001, Charli XCX bangs out another pop hit, You Used To, around about her 10th in 8 years, including the retro 1999. Bakermat get a 5th chart entry in 8 years with Temptation, Neiked follow-up their top 3 smash (here) with a re-imagining of a Stevie Wonder chart-topper - I Just Called turns love to hate, and also gives Anne-Marie another chart mention. Anne-Marie is the 3rd chart act mentioned to have had a retro hit mentioning a year, 2002 in her case. Punky Dead Pony debut, Bluegrass singer Billy Strings also debuts, Jungle add to their growing list, and Fitz And The Tantrums get a follow-up hit to 2016's number 2 Handclap. Only 6 years late!

Great to see the new Neiked song entering, I actually like it more than the Stevie Wonder original :D

I spy with my eye an Musical Youth appearance *.* I saw that on the VH1 every #1 of the 80's back when I was a teen. It's almost 40 years away exactly since it reached #1 only to be knocked off by 'Do You Really Want To Hurt Me' which is just as fab.

Your BJSC entry was the biggest grower for me. I've already forgotten what I gave it in the semi but it raced up to bigger points from me by the final. A great song!

Dolores still top 40 too. Have you heard their new song. I believe it was R1's tune of the weekend or something.

Edited by Roba!

Hi there John!

Nice to see the big gains for "Running Up That Hill", "Baby Jane", "What A Wonderful World", "My Heart's Been Waiting For You" and "Maybe You're The Problem" and the debuts for "I Can't Wait", 2001" and "Pass The Dutchie".

Great chart!

Hey John!

I'll be giving alice at the beach a listen later. I've only ever heard one of her songs before and it was everybody's gone to war which I loved.

Running up that hill getting that huge climb. Hopefully a sign of a potential #1 for you soon.

Maybe You're the problem finally making some decent movement. What is it about this that has you in two minds?

I do hope tove lo can scoot up your chart soon. What a bloody song!

Nice chart ^_^

Hey there John :hi:

Great to see Gigliola Cinquetti topping your chart  what an an extremely classy and beautiful winning song, really timeless-sounding.

Also loving the Kate Bush revival at the moment! I've been revisiting all of her albums one by one, 'Hounds of Love' has always been a massive favourite but I'm really appreciating 'The Sensual World' too right now. Also good to see Stevie Nicks and Foals entering!

Fab chart ^_^

Hi John,

Cornelia Jakobs still Top 10 :w00t:

Kate Bush Top 30 Mark Owen, Mark Ronson/Lucky Daye Top 40

27 64 27 3 RUNNING UP THAT HILL (MAKE A DEAL WITH GOD) - Kate Bush 21700 still surreal that this is No.1 in 2022. Even more surreal that it's broken so many records in doing so, like taking the longest time to reach No.1, beating the likes of Is This the Way To Amarillo etc...which makes me feel very old

65 NEW 65 1 I JUST CALLED - Neiked x Anne-Marie x Latto 7000 I've always disliked the original. There's roughly about 50 odd songs from Stevie Wonder which would have been far more deserving chart toppers but....I don't mind this!

Hi Rob! :) I had no idea why Musical Youth were in the itunes chart till I watched ep 4 of the Stranger Things series 4, and ah that makes sense now! I adored both Pass The Dutchie and Culture Club, bought both, played them a lot, topped my charts in 1982. Shame one of the kids ended up dying young, sadly.

Glad you liked BirdSMITH, and thanks for the points, I was happy to see them make the final and not come last

Hey James! :)

Oh I loved Everybody's Gone To War too! This one's more ballady... :D

Oh you predicted Kate well there! I genuinely wasnt going to let her top my chart for a third time last week, but I watched Stranger Things ep4 and wow! Just wow!

Ava Max is still growing on me, I like the verses but not so big on the chorus - a lot of tracks decide they dont need a chorus these days of course, but I'm old fashioned

Tove Lo is always good, she's already had 2 chart-toppers for me (in collabs) so you never know, but it's mostly "yeah it's very decent" rather than "god I love it" so far

cheers! B-)

Hey Jade!

I'm so very happy to see Gigliola appealing to younger music afficianados, still makes me cry when I try to sing along to bits of it  Makes everyone else cry too if they hear me trying to sing along to bits of it not knowing any Italian apart from the title!

Glad you are loving Kate, she's back on top this week for a third time after I watched Stranger Things! Jaw-dropping! Spine-tingling! Emotional! Kate is a goddess, an I also adore Hounds Of Love and Sensual World. Stevie Nicks is too, apart from her lifelong inability to get along with her Ex the equally fab Lindsey Buckingham.

Thanks for the comments! B-)

Hi Jordan! :)

Aww thanks for the BirdSMITH support, I was happy to see the track qualify, though I would have loved to see a surprise smash voting surge too - always fun to dash expectations with the odd Ritchie family or Kishi Bashi high-flyer :D

Never heard I Can't Wait before?! I thought it would an oldies radio staple in the US! :o Stevie's fab, a unique talent, never seen her solo but have seen the Mac 3 or 4 times, back around 1989 after Lindsey left, in the noughties after Lindsey came back and Christine left, and on the last tour when the classic 5 were back together. Some of her songs, like Gypsy, Sara, Landslide just make me cry, others like I Can't Wait, Rooms On Fire, and Edge Of 17 totally rock!

Paradise is Thomas Rhett in his whistling, tuneful, laid-back sunny-afternoon, vibe :D

Cheers! B-)

Hi AH! :)

Thanks as always for the even huger list this week!

I hope Gigliola makes my top 932 (it currently is, that's how long it's taken me to get cracking on it! Appropriately it takes about 932,000 sales to get in and Kate Bush is now top 200 (spoiler alert!) after 3 runs. It'll 1000 by the time I finsih it so I can just do a complete reminder list with revised positions then.

I was a mere young lad of 27, surveying the byways and highways of rural Dorset when Kate was first running up that hill. I was walking up that hill at the time, with a pedometer and hand computer. And the hill in question was Gold Hill in Shaftesbury alos know as the Hovis advert hill that Ridley Scott filmed. Madonna lived near that for a while too. Not a lot of people know that!

I initially loved Stevie's no. 1 - I helped it get to the top, I think we were all misty-eyed that he'd actually at long last got one. But I got bored with it by 1986 and it's a bit of a plodder these days. My Aunty Norma still loves it though, burnt her a hits CD a few months back with it on.

Cheers!

B-)
