Posted June 29, 20223 yr vkYyqxHdwNg It's 10 years since 'Turn Up the Radio' was first sent to radio as the third worldwide (fourth overall) single from 'MDNA'. The song was the first of three Martin Solveig productions to be accepted for the album and had originally been recorded for his album 'Smash' with vocals from Jade Williams, best known as Sunday Girl, who also co-wrote the song. When presented to Madonna, she wanted to change the lyrics and melodies. The song revisits Madonna's familiar theme of finding escapism in music and received positive reactions from critics when reviewing the album, some suggesting it would have made a better lead single; others, however, criticised it as generic. 'Turn Up the Radio' had limited success in the main charts, reaching #30 in Spain, #58 in Italy and #68 in Japan, although did become Madonna's 43rd #1 on the US Hot Dance Club Songs chart and 56th overall #1 on an active Billboard chart - a record. 10 years on, what are your thoughts on 'Turn Up the Radio'?
June 30, 20223 yr Wow haven't listened to this in years &...I still not keen on it & sounds even more dated than it did back then. This doesn't have that distintive Madonna stamp on it, juts a generic dance track that should've stayed on the album. How this was chosen over tracks like 'Gang Bang', 'Addicted' & 'Love Spent', I'll never know.
July 1, 20222 yr A very mediocre, uninventive song that should have been a bonus track at best. Definitely not single material, no tour must-have nor worth a video.
July 1, 20222 yr I can listen to it, but it doesn't really do much for me. I found it to be a bit of a filler track on the album and was surprised they went with it as a single. It's like a lifeless carbon copy of 'Hello'.
July 1, 20222 yr Author I can listen to it, but it doesn't really do much for me. I found it to be a bit of a filler track on the album and was surprised they went with it as a single. It's like a lifeless carbon copy of 'Hello'. I feel the same. I think it starts decent but the chorus falls very flat and it gets a bit annoying by the end. I get the vibe she was going for as the care-free, escapism-in-the-music theme is something she's revisited many times in her career but this just doesn't come off the same. The lyrics in the likes of 'Everybody', 'Holiday', 'Into the Groove', 'Vogue', 'Music' etc. are quite straightforward but with 'Turn Up the Radio' they are so banal and there's such a lack of feeling from Madonna's delivery. I guess they released it as a single because it did get really good reviews when the album was released, even suggesting it should have been the lead single. I think 'GMAYL' was a mis-step but at least it had a bit of personality to it.
July 1, 20222 yr It's a weak point on an already fairly weak album :( I think my main gripe is that it's so inessential whereas most of her other singles have something to them, be it a statement, or a banger or a message or SOMETHING. This is so vanilla? Definitely shouldn't have been a single imo.
July 4, 20222 yr Not a very good song. It should never have been a single. This was around the time when I started to lose interest in Madonna.
