Who, out of everyone announced so far, do we think would be the worst outcome?

I despise Johnson but this comment he made about the contest made me laugh. Self awareness finally?

There’s a contest under way and it’s happened and I wouldn’t want to damage anybody’s chances by offering my support.

self-awareness? More likely he hates them all for knifing him in the back the way he did Theresa May.. :teresa:

Nadim Zahawi has said he will force all departments to slash spending by 20% to finance tax cuts. The problem is many departments like health and social care are already struggling and barely able to provide a service to meet statutory need so this will only add to the mounting pressures. I am really worried about who will be elected. Hunt seems to be talking the most sense but I fear we will end up with someone like Sunak or Truss who will do nothing to help the lives of ordinary people and just make matters worse.

Well I work for a Council who combined from bits of 4 councils to save money ("economy of scale") and which hasn't quite worked to plan. We are in financial trouble and have a plan to flog off beach huts for 50-odd million on a 25-year-lease (to a council-owned vehicle financed by borrowing) to help pay for stuff. Over that period of time that's about half of what the beach huts would bring in to the Council coffers.

Tories dropped this one on everyone out of the blue and even one Tory MP is complaining to the government about the legalities of it. This wonderful idea comes from paying shitloads to outside Consultants. Consultants previously came up with terrific ideas like: transferring staff to a private company that went bankrupt immediately, just as the Council's Chief Accountant/Auditor said it would. They all back in-house now. Bank Of Bournemouth (RIP, except for the debt, which is likely alive and well unless someone's bought it - financial confidentiality so hard to say). Or pure Council ideas: A surf reef from a dodgy-cowboy company that went bankrupt after installation for about 3m and the reef fell to bits straight away. Buying an Imax building for 8m to knock it down and build a crazy golf that doesn;t block the sea view of cars driving down the road for 20 seconds (NOTE the sea view is still there if you get out of your car, it never went anywhere). Oh, and having closed 2 of the Town Council buildings to sell off (basically empty and not sold, staff choosing to work from home mostly) there's been a brainwave to buy the empty Barclays Bank building for millions. For a new Council Hub. Couldnt make it up. What could go wrong?

So, a 20% cut would do wonders for Councils' that have had cuts for the last 15 years and staff that have not had RPI rises and lost all the "benefits" that workers got in exchange for lower wages compared to the private sector. Recruiting is already a problem ins some skilled areas of the Council, so good luck with that. Everyone else just takes the job till a better private sector job comes along.

Nutjob fantasy proposals designed to appeal to nutjob fantasists. Tories in a nutshell. This is why the country is in an economic shitshow. And yes, Hunt is probably the most-sane candidate, so he's got no-chance. Plus side, the worse things get, the more likely they are to get booted out of office for another 15 years as they cant actually blame anyone else. They can try to blame the EU, but that's old now and only idiots will believe it.....

Rumour has it the clown will step down as leader to ... stand again as leader in the leadership campaign.

That would be my favourite option now (although don't quite see that happening as he's probably signing his endorsements and preparing his ultra crony honours list). I know I said that Johnson should stay down to do a proper contest but sod it, want open warfare as all of them are reprehensible. Although Javid's press conference could have been worse.

We're still not sure about Mogg and Patel joining - although the latter especially would be humiliated as not even her party can stand her.

Who, out of everyone announced so far, do we think would be the worst outcome?

Well it's whoever is in the middle of the Venn diagram where 'vaguely electable' crosses over with 'pretty horrific views/policy ideas' - the latter circle being absolutely massive of course.

Liz Truss I think may just about be, despite the aforementioned republican views (circa~ 1994 Lib Dem conference) able to hold together the bizarre Johnson electoral coalition, though she could also quite conceivably end up starting a nuclear war..

Not sure about Penny Mordaunt, disappointing that she's given up her principals to appeal to the gammons - but I don't believe she truly holds those views and given she's started her campaign by putting an ACTUAL convicted murderer in her promo video, which also looked like a rip-off of spoof The Day Today sketch from Chris Morris, I'm not sure she's got the 'vaguely electable' part right anyway.

Yeh the most extremist unelectable candidate for me please!

Think of the carnage Braverman or Truss could do in a month, let alone 2.5 years till they're forced out!

They will probably pick a household name given the election will be within 24 months!

RULES:

20 endorsements needed to pass to the next round, which probably means that poor brave Rehman Chishti won't last long. First ballot on 13 July and at least 30 votes must be achieved to stay in.

I've redone the poll - I hate our poll system.

Sadly(?) meme candidates Dorries and Rees-Mogg are not running, Patel was supposed to be dropping an announcement on Monday but that didn't happen so if she's in (and she has a fair few endorsements already), she's got not very long to announce. Plus I doubt she'd score well on this poll, in either question.

So the Top 2 in the Conservative Home poll (which is depressingly accurate) have Penny Mordaunt (is that pre or post throwing trans rights under a bus) vs Kemi Badenoch (hard line anti woke candidate). Think the anti Sunak campaign is destroying his chances laughingly calling him a socialist etc..
Snapps pulls out (ooer) and him and, slightly surprisingly, Raab support Sunak.

I’d like it to be Tom Tugendhat if we have to have a Tory in as he’s my local MP and fairly decent by Tory standards.

If I had to put money on it though at this early stage I’m guessing Liz Truss.

hmm my moneys now on Rishi, he seems to be getting a lot of MP support so will surely make the final two for the membership to vote on. though I still think his association with the Johnson government could go against him I’m not sure who else it would be at this point.

Badenoch is awful and deranged telling a PRIVATE company (Ben and Jerry's) that they shouldn't focus on social justice rather Profits etc..

Well can't a PRIVATE company do what the f*** they want in this corporate world and let the market decide if it's too WOKE for them? Which clearly in B&Js case is not as they are doing extremely well by all accounts.

Good news as Rees Smog and The Nut Job back Liz Truss under that BBC headline about child slavery smuggling. Hopefully it'll do the trick for all 3 of 'em.

Is it true the chosen Logo for Tom Tug spells out TIT? It's either starting your PM bid with a terrible decision or some wag is having a laugh with a dab of creative photoshopping....

Sweller Bravo targets benefit fraudsters to become The Chosen One. Oddly, as Armando ianucci pointed out, she's not targeting Business fraud or non-dom tax-avoiders which loses the taxpayer at least 10 times the amount through fraud that Benefit dodgers do. Poss just doesnt want to mention it in case Savid or the other baldy get the nomination and she's after a cushy top job.

All going wonderfully well so far I must say.
