Biography

The 1975 had already released a platinum-selling album—their 2013 self-titled debut—before they learned to trust their own instincts. “It’s hard to have that confidence when you’re young,” frontman Matty Healy told Apple Music. “A lot of people’s early music has a lot to do with: ‘Is this cool enough to show my mates?’ That can kill bands if they never leave The Hawley Arms”—the Camden pub/epicenter of British indie music in the 2000s. So when they began to make their second album, 2016’s I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it, the four-piece resolved to ignore outside expectation. As Healy recalls, it was time to “do exactly what we want.” It was a smart move.

Formed at school in Wilmslow, south of Manchester, in 2002, the group spent the second half of the 2010s becoming one of Britain’s biggest bands by continuously reinventing its sound. They’d begun by cloaking ’80s pop drama in the gauzy atmospherics of shoegaze on 2012’s Facedown EP, but were assimilating folk, UK garage, emo, techno, classical, and spoken-word features from Greta Thunberg by the time their 22-track fourth album Notes on a Conditional Form arrived in 2020. At the center of their sonic mazes, Healy, the son of TV actors Denise Welch and Tim Healy, addresses personal dramas and hot-button cultural themes with honesty and wit. If opening up about addiction and recovery ever threaten to shroud him in rock ’n’ roll folklore, songs such as “The Birthday Party”—partly about being too embarrassed to defecate if someone’s in the next room—deflate the myth-making.

Sprawling, restless, and striding snake-hipped along the line between invention and self-indulgence, their records often resemble great playlists rather than traditional albums. “We create in the way that we consume—with that same kind of pan-excitement,” said Healy. “There’s no rules when it comes to streaming. It doesn’t say, ‘Don’t listen to Headie One after Carole King.’ It’s almost like we don’t have those rules as well. There’s a lot of abrupt scene changes—but that’s what life’s like.” - Apple Music

Bring Me The Horizon

Biography

“Why would you want to make a record with all the songs sounding the same?” Bring Me The Horizon singer Oliver Sykes posed this question during an interview with Apple Music, and it very much reveals the guiding principle behind BMTH’s always-shifting music. As with a caterpillar’s metamorphosis into a butterfly, the band that started in the mid-2000s by unleashing a particularly vicious brand of metalcore is a vastly different creature from the one that achieved stardom with 2015’s That’s the Spirit, a meticulously crafted blend of alt-rock melodies, thunderous guitars, and electronic music. And that isn’t even half of it. Within their hits, the band (not unlike their heroes LINKIN PARK in the nu-metal days) consistently incorporate elements from styles across the pop-music spectrum. In addition to the EDM synths busting through “Throne,” there are immaculately polished vocals woven into the otherwise snarling “Mantra.” Then there’s “Nihilist Blues,” a 2019 collaboration with electro-pop eccentric Grimes that sees Bring Me The Horizon completely ditching the mosh pit for the all-night rave. None of this has gone down in a bubble, it should be noted. Along with the similarly minded I Prevail and A Day to Remember, Bring Me The Horizon belong to a cluster of forward-thinking metalcore outfits who have redefined heavy, riff-fueled music with a love of genre-busting adventurousness and utterly infectious hooks. - Apple Music

Lost Frequencies

Felix De Laet, better known as Lost Frequencies, has soared to phenomenal success in recent times. Releasing his global smash hit ‘Are You With Me’ back in 2014 and quickly cementing himself as a name to watch, the track rapidly ascended by hitting multi-platinum status and taking the #1 spot in 18 countries. Add to this Lost Frequencies was the first Belgian artist to secure his first 5 hit singles charting at the #1 spot on the Ultratop official Belgian charts, as well as the first Belgian artist to hit #1 in the UK, he went on to release his long-awaited debut album ‘Less Is More’ in 2016. The album, with notable singles’ ‘Beautiful Life’ and ‘What Is Love 2016’ dazzled globally, certifying a future star for a new generation. Lost Frequencies also firmly established himself as one of the strongest, fastest rising talents with his debut entry in the 2017 Top 100 DJ Poll at #26; ‘highest new entry’ that year. As the accolades multiply for Lost Frequencies, counting wins for ‘Dance International’ and ‘Hit of The Year’ at the ECHO award ceremony (comparable with the U.S. Grammy's) amongst his awards, he has also become a leading light in the world of streamed music. To date his music has received over 1 billion plays and counting as every release, from his remix of Major Lazer, Justin Bieber & MØ’s ‘Cold Water’ to his most recent release ‘Crazy’ with Zonderling (already a #1 airplay hit in Belgium, Germany & Poland), continues to receive support from fans across the world. - Spotify

Calum Scott

Calum Scott honed his huge, honeyed pipes singing other people’s songs, but he didn’t fully find his voice until he began creating his own intimate pop vignettes. Born in 1988, in the Northern England city of Kingston upon Hull, Scott first took up the drums, while his sister Jade became the singer of the family. Eventually, Jade discovered her brother’s natural way with a fierce falsetto and chilling vibrato and signed him up for a local singing competition in 2013. He sang Paolo Nutini’s “Last Request” and won. Following that thrill of performing in front of a crowd, Scott joined Maroon 4, a Maroon 5 cover band, before tagging along with Jade at an audition for the ninth series of Britain’s Got Talent. There, with a stunning, slowed-down version of Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own,” he blew away the judges, especially the notoriously scathing Simon Cowell, who pressed the “Golden Buzzer,” sending Scott directly to the live semifinals. Nerves got the better of him in the finals, and while he didn’t win, the singer used that exposure to launch his solo career and start writing material for his 2018 debut album, Only Human. Like his showstopping Robyn cover, Scott’s original songs are both poignant and empowering, especially the swaying, gospel-tinged celebration “You Are the Reason” and the piano-powered tearjerker “No Matter What,” a raw retelling of his experience coming out to his parents. Such personal tales bring out a sincerity and soulfulness that show Scott’s songwriting to be just as moving as his voice. - Apple Music

Poor Calum that he can't seem to get a solo original top 40 hit. I know 'You Are The Reason' was a millionaire mind.
