As the 1990s seem to generate the most discussion in this form I thought I'd go deep into the End of Year charts and present the Top 70 highest placed non-top 5 hits in the End of Year charts of the decade.

The number 1 in this chart is fairly predictable for chart fans but surprises will be a-plenty.

For something to think about - 2 of the 70, not only missed the weekly top 5 but also the weekly top 10.

Yes I can guess the #1 here but I’m expecting a lot of unexpected memories along the way ^_^

70 - Eternal - Just A Step From Heaven

69th best seller of 1994

Chart Run

12-11-9-8-10-16-23-34-45-60

We kick off with the 69th best selling single of 1994. Eternal were the most successful RnB girl group of the 1990s with 15 hits in the decade.

In 1994 they had 5 hits and scored the 4th best selling album of the year outselling Pink Floyd's Division Bell and Blur's Parklife.

Just a Step From Heaven is the only Eternal single that I actually like.

It didn't outsell any number 1 singles of the year.

Looking forward to this - yeah, I think I know what #1 is but the full countdown should be very entertaining :)
I'm fairly sure of what #2 will be as well. I can only recall a few other non-Top 5 songs making the YE top 40s, but beyond that it'll be almost a complete mystery to me!

Yes I can think of what will likely be #2 but I don’t know after that.

That Eternal song is a good example of what I was hoping for, a song I’d completely forgotten all about but actually quite liked at the time

Also… is one of the songs that missed the top 10 a AA of sorts?

edit… actually I can think of 3 tracks that could be in contention that missed the top 10

My guesses for those are

Cranberries - Linger

and

Shampoo - Trouble

. There was also

Steps - 5, 6, 7, 8

but that was split between two years.

Ahhhhhh I was also thinking of

Shampoo but had also considered Alisha’s Attic - I Am, I Feel and Scarlet - Independent Love Song

. I forgot about the split one altogether!

Eternal. The only way is up from here... :teresa:  (edit: appears to have hit a peak of 31 in my charts which is about 30 places higher than I would have thought, so maybe it's better than I remember...)

69 - Take That - A Million Love Songs

69th best seller of 1992

After 4 upbeat songs, Take That bring out a ballad. Reportedly written by Gary when he was 15, it's not bad and recalls a time before everything they released would go top 3. I always find it interesting looking back at a band's singles before they became massive - the glimpses of greatness, sometimes a few missteps.

After this, they didn't actually miss the top 3 for another 15 years (13 singles).

This didn't outsell any number 1s of 1992.

Of all the guesses of the non-Top 10 singles to feature here - only one is correct. :heehee:

68 - Bizz Nizz - Don't Miss The Party Line

69th best seller of 1990

Chart Run

22-8-7-7-9-13-21-24-38-52-74

The only UK hit single for this current project but Jean-Paul de Coster would go on to much more success by forming 2 Unlimited. It's a pretty poor example of 1990 dance music. The genre had become much more sophisticated, even at this early point.

Predictably enough, it didn't outsell any number 1s of 1990.

67 - R.E.M. - Shiny Happy People

69th best seller of 1991

Chart Run

35-13-9-8-6-9-17-25-37-46-70

A proper Summer hit from a band that was on its way to being the biggest band in the world. Vilified in some quarters as the band were well able to do indie pop without the annoyance factor. Still, it has 3 great vocalists on it so who cares.....

It outsold Iron Maiden's Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter which was a 2 week number 1 at the start of the year.

Thanks for doing another thread like this Colm!

I loved Shiny Happy People at the time when I was 7 and I still love it and don’t care what anyone else says! :P

It's a No from me to Take That and Bizz Nizz, not at all what I was buying at those times. REM was a great uplifting single, which of course REM never do and then promptly disowned refusing a slot on Greatest Hits, which is a shame cos it's very much in fun B52's style thanks to Katie Pearson doing the guest vocals. I will take this over Man On The Moon or Everybody Hurts anyday. Michale Stipe claims he has a sense of humour so could someone do Everybody Hurts in the style of Shiny Happy People and we'll test that conviction? Thanks! Just to be clear REM have done some great stuff, It's The End Of The World, Orange Crush, Find The River, Losing My Religion, Draggin The Line, Crush With Eyeliner and the fab Imitation Of Life but none of them are what you might call joyous.
