52 - Bomb the Bass - Winter In July

64th best seller of 1991

Chart Run

30-14-7-7-7-15-22-30-49

Tim Simenon's career highlights have always fascinated me. He started with the cut-and-paste house anthem Beat Dis in 1988 and then a few months later produced Buffalo Stance for Neneh Cherry. In 1991, he made this world-music/trip-hop piece.

By 1994 he had moved on to the hip-hop of Bug Powder Dust. Three years later he would produce Depeche Mode's Ultra album.

Winter in July outsold number 1s Queen's Innuendo and Iron Maiden's Bring Your Daughter... to the Slaughter.

51 - The Shamen - LSI

64th best seller of 1992

Chart Run

9-7-6-7-13-19-39-55

I've always considered this to be the low point of The Shamen's singles. It's flimsy and lightweight and contains the word sex in the chorus almost just to draw attention to itself.

It didn't outsell any number 1s from 1992.

50 - Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence

64th best seller of 1990

Chart Run

17-6-6-6-12-20-32-52-62

Into the top 50 we go and this is easily my favourite song in the whole countdown. Musical perfection - as if it's made completely from shiny metal spheres. I want it to go on forever.

It didn't outsell any number 1s from 1990.

LSI is terrible by Shamen standards. Winter In July is gorgeous and obviously Enjoy The Silence is fantastic.

Just had a listen to the Adam Clayton thing and yeah it seems a bit meh. I assume its second wind chart run was thanks to the film release.

Enjoy the Silence is quite possibly the best song ever recorded, I love it THAT much. I agree that it doesn't last long enough, I made my own versions as I have done with many DM tracks incorporating various bits from various mixes so the one I typically listen to is 7:35
A combination of mixmeister years ago and just a file splitting program now... I can send you the link to the revised album if you like? Some of them are better than others and some are just the extended versions etc
This reminder has meant I have spent about 2 hours today making new versions of Enjoy the Silence

There are worse ways to spend 2 hours :D

Now this may sound unlikely but none of these 70 songs peaked at number 9 in the weekly charts.

49 - Ten Sharp - You

63rd best seller of 1992

Chart run

44-40-32-18-12-10-10-10-11-20-25-42-69

This is our second highest number 10 peaking single. I love this song and I'd forgotten how much I do until re-listening to it now. I remember following it up the charts in 1992. It comes from the same world as Hue and Cry, and Kenny Thomas. All very uncool acts.

This didn't outsell any number 1s from 1992.

Winter In July is just drop dead gorgeous and depeche is a stone cold classic. Both of them i contributed to sales and both topped my charts :cheer:

48 - Sweetbox - Everything's Gonna Be Alright

63th best seller of 1998

7-5-9-13-15-18-25-37-48-64-60-72

I've made a bit of a mistake. My source had this song peaking at number 7 but it didn't. As it peaked a number 5, it's not eligible for this rundown. I'm too lazy to go back and change all the earlier entries' positions.

Oh I do remember that Ten Sharp track... I couldn't think of it when you first posted it but I can recall it now I've played the youtube clip... it's really been totally forgotten now hasn't it and it is quite good really.

One Of Us is great, was a big favourite of mine at the time.

46 - Perfecto Allstarz - Reach Up (Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag)

63rd best seller of 1995

17-8-9-7-6-7-13-24-41-67-75

Dance was in an odd place in 1995. Rave was long dead and Eurodance had ran out of ideas. The Prodigy, the Chemical Brothers, Leftfield, Orbital were all exploring less clubby sounds.

There was a lot of slightly-novelty/one off tracks and this was one of them.

Those skeletons scared my 7 year old brother back then. :o

It didn't sell any number 1s from 1995.
