August 31, 20224 yr Author 66 - M-Beat Featuring General Levy - Incredible mL2Bgj-za5k 68th best seller of 1994 Chart Run 11-10-8-10-15-24-40-48-66 It took a re-release for this to go top 10, supposedly the first jungle track to do so but I always claim that On a Ragga Tip qualifies as jungle. I didn't know the follow up to Incredible, Sweet Love was a cover. Probably sounded groundbreaking at the time but I was fairly bored with reggae/ragga/dance hall/jungle by this stage in 1994.
August 31, 20224 yr Actually heard a clip of 'Incredible' on Radio 4 of all places earlier today funnily enough (running a segment about the history of jungle music). An absolute classic. *.*
September 1, 20224 yr Author 65 - UB40 - Higher Ground zj6jgvYNnYI 68th best seller of 1993 Chart Run 8-8-8-11-14-24-37-46-71 Parent album Promises and Lies spending its 6th week at number 1 didn't stop Higher Ground from doing well - initially. Not as poor as I remember. Didn't outsell any number 1s that year.
September 1, 20224 yr I bought both Incredible and Higher Ground at the time... although I did buy a lot of singles in the 90s so it wouldn't surprise me if I bought a very high proportion of this countdown. Higher Ground was the highlight of the Promises and Lies album for me. I liked these two singles at the time, bought the album and remember not making it all the way through :D
September 1, 20224 yr Author 64 - Whigfield - Think Of You QFeR33I0HPs 68th best seller of 1995 Chart Run 12-7-8-7-11-15-22-30-40-53-73 Third time out for Whigfield, and her singles get slightly less terrible each time. Previous hit Another Day would have almost certainly made this chart too if it didn't have its sales split over 1994 and 1995. This didn't outsell any number 1s of 1995. September 1, 20224 yr Author 63 - Stevie B - Because I Love You (The Postman Song) Xc1uQI2XmZs 68th best seller of 1991 Chart Run 35-18-6-6-6-11-18-42-69 A huge hit in the USA in 1990, this came out in Spring 1991. This is 1 of only 3 songs in this list to spend 3 weeks at number 6. I remember loving this at the time. Not so much any more. This outsold the following number 1s from the same year Queen - Innuendo Iron Maiden - Bring Your Daughter... to the Slaughter
September 1, 20224 yr Think of You was Whigfield’s best single, I bought that one too… no such purchase for The Postman Song though, not my type of song at all
September 1, 20224 yr That is definitely the best of Whigfield’s hits, I love the melody and production, bit cheeky for radio (I need you inside me tonight). Quite a good chart run for it considering the law of diminishing returns…
September 1, 20224 yr I absolutely loved Whigfield and all her songs when I was 10 haha. That Postman Song is utterly grim - like having white chocolate with honey and sugar sprinkled on top. I really like the UB40 one; not sure why they get such a hard time. Edited September 2, 20224 yr by JulianT
September 2, 20224 yr UB40 were great, they suffered from being successful for over 20 years and not having the nostalgia-factor kicking in - thats a thing for acts with initial shorter careers, and even monster stars like Elton John have low ebbs form which to have a resurgence eg Elton in 1982/3 after being in the duldrums 3 or 4 years. I dont remember that Whigfield track at all. Playing it and I still don't recall it. Should see if it I charted it sometime in 2025 when Ive caught up to digitising 1995:) Stevie B was huge on US radio, it reminded me of Florida hols so I liked it at first. Then I didn't.
September 2, 20224 yr Author 62 - Blackstreet - Don't Leave Me DBUz2nkOKsc 67th best seller of 1997 Chart Run 6-9-13-17-18-21-23-34-41-61 I thought I didn't know this song, based on the title but I recognised it on hearing. This was their biggest hit excluding their feature with Janet Jackson. It outsold the following number 1s from 1997 Blood On The Dance Floor - Michael Jackson Block Rockin' Beats - Chemical Brothers
September 2, 20224 yr Author 61 - Simply Red - The Montreux EP lrtqVMH0ulU 66th best seller of 1992 Chart Run 11-11-11-14-18-15-14-24-38-50 Releasing an EP of new material after scoring the best selling album of not just the current year but also the previous year, they were always going to do well. They do have a somewhat troubled relationship with the number 11 position. This was their 20th charting single but the 4th that would rise no higher than #11. And the third to spend more than a week there - Something Got Me Started and Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye did a fortnight each. This didn't outsell any of the number 1s of 1992. Edited September 2, 20224 yr by Colm
September 3, 20224 yr Today I learned Blackstreet had at least two songs that peaked higher than 'No Diggity' (which is surely just about the only song anyone knows by them these days). Various versions of 'No Diggity' make up 6 of Blackstreet's 10 current 'most popular' songs on Spotify
September 3, 20224 yr That must be the unguessed non-Top 10 hit in this countdown. How strange that Simply Red had so many weeks of #11 peaking hits - they had another after that so that's 5 songs with 9 weeks in total, and the two with a single week there each had a week at #12 as well.
September 3, 20224 yr Author 60 - Des'ree - Life BKtrWU4zaaI 66th best seller of 1998 Chart Run 8-15-14-16-16-21-22-21-26-30-34-41-61-63-72 Noteworthy for the ridiculous verse... "I don't want to see a ghost It's a sight that I fear most I'd rather have a piece of toast And watch the evening news" Number 1s from 1998 that Life outsold Aqua - Turn Back Time - Aqua All Saints - Bootie Call - All Saints Oasis - All Around The World - Oasis Boyzone - All That I Need - Boyzone Melanie B featuring Missy 'Misdemeanour' Elliot - I Want You Back Spacedust - Gym and Tonic
September 3, 20224 yr Whigfield’s Think Of You is decent, always been fond of it. Life is a Buzzjack icon!
September 3, 20224 yr Author 59 - Twenty4Seven Featuring Captain Hollywood - I Can't Stand It n9N8a5Xh0lA 66th best seller of 1990 Chart Run 28-11-7-7-7-11-17-27-39-69 This went through several incarnations before the mix that was eventually released in the UK. A hip-house version, then an awful dance version, then the classier version with the piano and Kraftwerk samples. This didn't outsell any number 1s of 1990. Edited September 3, 20224 yr by Colm
