October 29, 20222 yr 'Don't You Want Me' did eventually make the top 5 sort of - the David Guetta remix of Snoop Dogg's 'Sweat' which peaked at #4 heavily interpolated it.
October 29, 20222 yr Author Interpolation is a polite way of putting it. Theft is a better word 😄 Edited October 29, 20222 yr by Colm
October 30, 20222 yr Author 3 - Lionel Richie - My Destiny 1AFN4dn09oM 32rd best seller of 1992 Chart Run 30-16-11-11-8-8-7-8-14-20-23-34-53 And 1 place higher in the End of Year chart in 1992 was this slow burning chart success. Considering its best-of parent album, Back to Front, was still in the top 10 18 weeks after it entered the album chart at number 1, staying there for 6 weeks, and that the previous single taken from that album, Do It To Me, stalled at number 33, My Destiny was a remarkable achievement. It never had outstanding weekly sales but hovering around 20,000 per week for 6 weeks consolidated its position as a sleeper hit. This was the biggest selling hit to not reach the top 5 in 1992 and remained the only number 7 hit reach the top 40 best sellers of any year of the 1990s until 1998.
October 30, 20222 yr Oh had forgotten about My Destiny. Lovely song from Lionel. Right I do definitely know what the Top 2 are and the order!
October 30, 20222 yr I haven’t heard that since 1992 and had entirely forgotten about it, there was no chance of me guessing it. Listening to it now and it’s actually pretty good. It sounds like it could have been a Take That single.
October 31, 20222 yr This chart has some extremely fascinating singles in it but 'My Destiny' is not one of them. Ultra bland and over polished. Never really liked any of Lionel's stuff. Although I'm pretty sure something far far blander is coming up soon... :(.
October 31, 20222 yr I don't have a clue what the top 2 will be so I'm looking forward to the reveal.
October 31, 20222 yr One of the Top 2 could be described as bland… the other is anything but. I definitely know no.1 as that will be a clear "winner" but don't have a Scoobies what the other one is much to my annoyance and not going to look this one up. Edited October 31, 20222 yr by Smint
October 31, 20222 yr Author 2 - Macy Gray - I Try WEQ0l_m3Xm0 20th best seller of 1999 Chart Run 10-10-9-8-7-7-7-6-9-11-11-15-13-16-15-22-27-38-42-43-55-69 It wasn't just 1997 that had phenominal sales - 1998 and 1999 did too. I Try managed to sell 500,000 in 12 weeks, never having breached the top 5. It moved past that milestone on New Year's Eve. The 1999 number 1s that Macy outsold Praise You - Fatboy Slim A Little Bit More - 911 Pretty Fly (for a White Guy) - Offspring You Don't Know Me - Armand Van Helden feat Duene Harden Maria - Blondie Fly Away - Lenny Kravitz Blame It on the Weatherman - B*Witched Swear It Again - Westlife I Want It That Way - Blackstreet Boys You Needed Me - Boyzone Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen) - Baz Luhrmann If I Let You Go - Westlife Mi Chico Latino - Geri Halliwell We're Going to Ibiza - Vengaboys Flying Without Wings - Westlife Keep on Movin' - Five Lift Me Up - Geri Halliwell She's the One/It's Only Us - Robbie Williams King of My Castle - Wamdue Project Edited October 31, 20222 yr by Colm
October 31, 20222 yr I absolutely love that song. It’s so timeless and her delivery still makes me smile, it’s so happy and effortless
October 31, 20222 yr Great song and such an unlikely chart run for 1999 when 4 or more new entries in the Top 10 every week was the norm.
October 31, 20222 yr It was completely new to me when it charted at 10, felt like a bit of a surprise as I hadn’t heard it anywhere. So it was no shock that it hung around so long as radio started to pick it up. That chart run is amazing though, to not fall until the 9th week around in 1999 was so unlikely to say the least. It’s a very classy and unique song, made even more memorable by Macy’s voice.
October 31, 20222 yr Absolutely love this. ❤️ Agree with everyone above. Didn't think of it as I probably don't place it as a 90s track as was released at the decade boundary. Loved her follow up 'Still' and that deserved to be a massive hit too.
November 1, 20222 yr Love 'My Destiny', one of Lionel's more underappreciated for me. Also have a soft spot for 'I Try'. I genuinely believed she was a much older lady having a hit when I was a kid because of the voice :kink: took me surprise that she was in actual fact my age  or thereabouts.
November 4, 20222 yr Author 1 - LeAnn Rimes - How Do I Live? MUFasKZcH_c 6th best seller of 1998 Chart Run 7-9-12-17-12-9-9-7-11-12-12-11-9-10-11-15-17-20-27-24-29-30-22-28-32-27-35-32-32-36-41-51-66-72 That chart run speaks for itself really. Not only was this the 6th best seller of 1998 it was the 58th best seller of the decade over all. It outsold all number 6s and number 5s of the 1990s. Angels, Together Again and Missing were the only numbers 4 or 3 that took in more sales. In managed to out performed 76% of all number 1 singles of the 90s, too. All that and it never rose higher than 15th in the radio airplay chart and only finished in 41st place in that End of Year Chart. An astonishing success. Edited November 4, 20222 yr by Colm
November 4, 20222 yr That chart run for How Do I Live? was absolutely unheard of in early 1998. I'm not the biggest fan of the song, but it was refreshing to know that a song could continue to sell consistently and reach a new audience for months without the relentless promotion that was being given to first week releases at the time. Thanks for the countdown Colm, well preesented and I learnt a lot!
