I don’t know whether it’s intentional or accidental but I noticed that Loves Got A Hold On My Heart is missing from the list in the first post.

Kicking off this selection of songs is A Hundred Years of Winter at #35 on this countdown. Released in November 2021 as the 4th & final single from Step's 7th studio album What The Future Holds Pt 2 & was co-written by singer Darren Hayes from Savage Garden. The song was released with a single edit, F9 and Shortland remixes. While I do agree that the single version is far better than the overly long album version, originally a mid-tempo ballad & then transforming it into an electro-pop dance number with overly dramatic production and a cool haunting quality to it. But don't think this really worked as a single, especially given the awfully cheap music video it got & the response from fans was rather muted at best, it just feels so forgettable and fails to be a standout moment in the group's stellar discography.

Next up at #34 is the one that started it all 5,6,7,8, released in November 1997 as the group's debut single following their being put together after each group member responded to a magazine advert looking for people to audition to be in a pop band. The song is a techno-pop & country song that was written by Barry Upton & Steve Crosby, with production by Karl Twigg, Mark Topham and Pete Waterman. The track was created as a novelty number in order to cash in on the line dancing craze at the time. Well everybody has to start somewhere, but very few are quite as divisive as this one as still to this time it stands out as an oddity in the group's discography, given its techno/country pop sound which barely had a shelf life to begin with, however I've always liked it, its catchy as hell & plus how often do we get to hear Lee on lead vocals.

#33 is Better The Devil You Know, originally sung by Kylie Minogue in 1990. Steps recorded their cover version in 1999 and released it as a double a-side alongside 'Say You'll Be Mine' in X-Mas of the same year. The song would later featured on their 3rd studio album Buzz. This is a rather interesting cover version as it could have only existed at this point in time, due to Kylie being absent from the spotlight & well it seemed at the time that her commercial peak was behind her (but luckily the 2000's would bring her back from the brink). Steps do attempt to breathe new life into the track with the hi-NRG production that bumps up the pitch, the trademark drum kicks and piano riffs which adds a rather nice touch to the song. Okay this will never beat Kylie's original, but its still a decent effort and really comes to life during their live performances.

At #32 is Step's latest offering Hard 2 Forget, released in July 2022 as the lead single from their 3rd Greatest Hits album Platinum Collection. The song is a cover of a Vincint track from 2020 was one of the 2 new tracks featured on the compilation. After less than 24 hours of release the song debuted at #21 on the UK Downloads chart. The song is decent with a catchy chorus that fits into their discography quite well & probably needs more time for fans to fully appreciate it.

5,6 7,8 too low for me, I thought it would the top 30, thought BTDYKmight aswell but am less surprised, the others are placed about right.

The Runner still being in, ahem, the running, over some classics... undeserved x

Interesting that three songs from the standard track list (CD1 of the deluxe) are already out this early!

I'll never really understand what is supposedly so terribly offensive about Steps' version of Better the Devil You Know!

Their version is not offensive, it is pleasant but very watered down in comparison to the original which is far superior.

5,6,7,8 placed disappointingly in these results.

Disappointing to see 5,6,7,8 place so low and Better The Devil You Know to some degree as well. The other two are probably,y about right.

Haha thanks Spiceboy!

5,6,7,8 done its job in getting Steps well noticed although it was a song that could only have been their debut but how do you think things would have worked out if last thing on my mind was their debut and there was no 5,6,7,8?

That's an interesting thought, I'm not sure really. Last Thing On My Mind had the more appeal I think but would it have done as well? 5,6,7,8 wasn't huge but I guess the foundations it set allowed Last Thing On My Mind to succeed. Without it I'm not sure it would've.

Again, no big surprises. Though ‘5,6,7.8’ deserved a little higher :claire: And..happy to see the average scores already that high!

Ya I'm the same, the line dancing gimmick for 5,6,7,8 worked and while last thing on my mind is great I'm really not sure if ut would have got as noticed as much.
