18. The Slightest Touch | 8.718 Highest Scores: 10: (Feel The Fever, pippa, Aaron, Yobnedor), Lowest Scores: 5.5: (Herbs)

#18 is The Slightest Touch, released in August 2021 as the 3rd single from their 7th studio album What The Future Holds Pt 2. The song was originally sung by Five Star back in 1987. Steps stated that they were massive fans of Five Star & while brainstorming possible cover ideas to include on the album, this felt like a natural choice. Five Star gave the cover their seal of approval, saying Steps had "nailed" the song and they loved the band's take on it. The song was originally a promo release, but due to it becoming a fan favourite, they decided to give it the full single treatment.

Steps does a great job of updating this 80's pop classic into a contemporary pop masterpiece, complete with dramatic synths, epic disco beats & multi layered harmonies which has become a trademark for the group. This deserved a much better music video & release than it got. But other than that, it's a great cover that goes well with several of their other iconic cover versions.
A massive bop 💃 A shame they didn't give it a proper music video, but the visualiser is a lot of fun!
The slightest touch i still love, it was a great cover and its an awful shame they didnt push this more as they could have got a top 100 out of it, its the nearest they came to doing that since scared of the dark.

17. Here And Now | 8.781 Highest Scores: 11: (LMFan), 10: (Aaron, Yobnedor, spiceboy, Herbs), Lowest Scores: 7.5/7: (Feel The Fever, pippa, Jessie Where)

#17 is Here And Now, released in June 2001 as a double a-side release alongside 'You'll Be Sorry' from their 3rd studio album Buzz. Both songs were remixed for their single release with this having the official titles of Q-Street Mix (also called the Soundtrade Mix). The song peaked at #4 on the UK singles chart, becoming yet another successful hit for the group, but would be one of their lowest selling singles during the 97-01 years of their careers. In Europe the track was released alongside 'Summer of Love' instead of 'YBS'. The relatively long wait of 5 months between singles was due to the group promoting the album across Europe & America. 'Here and Now' was picked as a single due to a fan vote on the group's official website where this was the highest amount of votes, 'You'll Be Sorry' came 2nd which was why both song were released together.

Even in its original album form the song was a solid up-tempo number, but the Q-Street mix really elevates it by shifting the tone up several notches & making the production far more dynamic with brooding synth stabs, a more joyful chorus & a fantastic key change that gives this that extra bit of fire that the original was lacking. The record label wasn't going to ignore the fact that one of the song's co-writers was Andreas Carlsson who had also worked on tracks for some of the biggest acts of the time such as Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys & N Sync. So of course this was gonna be a single, due to his involvement & yes it was a great choice, but like I said on the 'YBS' post, both of the tracks should have been released separately & not have the 5 month gap & release them sooner, as both could have been top 5 hits in their own right.

Completely forgot to vote in this, Heartbeats average would have been higher if I did haha

Love you and The slightest are where I’d imagine them. And indeed, The slightest could’ve been a nice top 100 hit for them with some promo. Surprised at Here and now!

Also :o at those high average scores already!

Here and Now maybe a bit higher than I would place it, a great song though!

16. Say You'll Be Mine | 8.812 Highest Scores: 10: (JosephStyles, spiceboy), Lowest Scores: 7.5: (Run For Cover)

#16 is the ever so chirpy Say You'll Be Mine, released as a double a-side with 'Better The Devil You Know' in December 1999. The former featured on their 2nd studio album Steptacular, while the former would later feature on the group's 3rd studio Buzz in 2000. This followed the same strategy as 'Heartbeat/Tragedy' by pairing a current album track with a brand-new cover version. This was the first single to feature all 5 members on lead vocals & the music video saw the group acting out different movies such as 'Romeo & Juliet', 'Austin Powers', Titanic', 'There's Something About Mary', 'Batman Returns' & 'Armageddon'. Upon release the song was released during a very busy chart week in which several acts were clamouring for the X-Mas #1 spot. Steps entered the UK charts at #7, which was seen as a minor disappointment at the time, but would eventually reach #4 in January 2000, adding to their growing roster of top 5 hits.

A charming light & fluffy cute little bop that feels quite forgotten from this phase of the group's careers, despite it being one of their most successful singles, hell it was even been ignored from most of their concert tours in favour of 'Better The Devil You Know' (although it did make the 'What The Future Holds set list in 2021). Yet at the same time its rather fascinating as it sounds quite unlike anything else in their back catalogue, due to it being quite difficult to classify, it's not quite a ballad or uptempo either, but nonetheless its brilliantly uplifting & bursts at the seams with catchy hooks & soaring melodies with a delightfully unpredictable structure with some electric guitar hooks thrown into the mix towards the last part of the song. I honestly didn't expect this to do so well on here, I mean look at that 8.8 average (which in most other rates would be enough for a top 10 placement), its nice to see this overlooked little gem getting so much love in recent years.

I definitely have a soft spot for Say You’ll Be Mine  Uplifting is definitely the word for it. It was one of the songs that the audience responded the best to when I saw them in Birmingham last year!

I feel like Steps underestimate its popularity a bit. Being relegated to Platinum Collection CD2 felt harsh for this.

Yeah, Say You'll Be Mine's Spotify stream total is quite good too compared to some of their other hits that are on Disc 1. It's surprising that it's sometimes missed out on setlists too, they clearly see it as a second tier single of theirs but I don't get the impression the general public feel that way about it. It's nice that they all share the vocals on this, and the middle eight and end of the song is particularly enjoyable.

I've never been that big on Here and Now compared to some of their other stuff but it's good, the tour mix was great last year - loved the intro to it. I'm surprised Paradise Lost didn't even come second in that album fan vote.

Great result for say youll be mine as its often overlooked although it has grown in popularity, im happy to see it this high as i thought it might come in lower.

I’m not sure this is better than The Slightest Touch (in fact for me it definitely isn’t!) but that’s why these kinda rates are fun!

15. To The Beat of My Heart | 8.843 Highest Scores: 11: (JospehStyles), 10: (Feel The Fever, LMFan, Yobnedor), Lowest Scores: 7: (gog lad84, spiceboy, Qween)

#15 is To The Beat of My Heart, which was originally released as a promo single in November 2020, before being released as the 3rd single from their 6th studio album What The Future Holds & peaked at #33 on the UK downloads chart. The song was co-written by MNEK & Mollie King of The Saturdays. The track is believed to be from the recording sessions from her scrapped debut solo album.

An instant fave of mine upon the album's release with this thumping dance beats, infectious verses & a massive chorus that's brimming with joyful energy. It's exactly what you want from a classic Steps track, but with that cool modern twist. Although after learning that this was intended for Mollie King, I can kinda see it & doesn't feel like it was written for them as it has a very feminine vibe to it. But nonetheless Steps still managed to make this dance floor banger pop in all the right ways & slots in very well within their discography. With this being out that means there's only 1 track from disc 2 of the 'Platinum Collection' left in the running.
