After the video got added to their channel I was wondering:

• Should they have released it without Summer of love?

• What would be it’s run + total sales?

Curious to see your thoughts :)

I think it probably would've scraped the top 10 at #9 or something and spent 3 weeks in the top 40, having a brand new song attached would've been a big incentive to buy this single (plus it's not exactly the strongest of songs in its own right either)

As an aside, I can't quite comprehend the notion of 'Summer of Love' not existing.

It would have had very short term success.

If Summer of Love was paired with a stronger song it could have become a much bigger sized hit.

I'm not as convinced about this, it was very late into the album campaign by this stage. Although we all know it could have snatched a #3 position if they'd gone for a CD2.

I thought you meant what if it were a solo single for one of the band… I mean it is really it’s a H and Claire release 😅

If it was a solo release who would have worked it the best?

When I Said Goodbye was a terrible choice of single. It was done to favour H and Claire in my opinion. I do find it odd that Summer of Love didn’t really help the release as much as I’d hoped. SOL is a banger and I have always felt number 5 was such a poor peak for it, especially with SOL being up there with their best. I think SOL should’ve been released on its own as a new single for the summer.

Judging by the inclusion of a new song Summer of Love only getting them to #5, I guess When I Said Goodbye on its own would have failed to make the Top 5. Maybe low Top 10, indicating that it was a single too far from Steptacular.

I kind of wonder if Summer of Love would have done better than #5 if it had been released by itself and all promotional attention was on it. Still released in the same week as WISG/SOL.

I wonder the same I think if all focus was on it it may have done better, it's also a song of their that should have done better in other countries.

I guess it could have done as I somehow missed SOL at the time of release, I remember reading / seeing more of When I said goodbye and thinking it was yet another single from Steptacular. I wasn't really aware of SOL until the Buzz album came out. I think I must have seen the video but I thought it was the Stomp video or part of it for some reason.

Interestingly I didn't really hear much of 'When I Said Goodbye' at the time, it was 'Summer of Love' I kept seeing on the music channels and performances of. The other one almost seemed like an afterthought.
'When I Said Goodbye' - I do agree that on its own it would have struggled & pairing it with 'Summer of Love' was a smart move especially for the summer period. Other than 'WISG' was there really any other single choices left on 'Steptacular', maybe 'Never Say Never Again' or 'I Surrender', but either of these would have been a step backwards in the aftermath of 'Deeper Shade of Blue'. Considering the album had already sold well over a Million by this point, 'WISG' could have maybe achieved a #6 peak, but this would have been a more fan driven release & had a run like this =

*06*-13-20-29-41-50-59-72

with sales of around 90k-100k.
