To celebrate it’s 20th anniversary, ‘Sound Of The Underground’ is being issued for the very first time as a collectible 7” vinyl. Backed with a never-before-released alternative vocal version of the song from the archives, this limited edition vinyl also comes with a sheet of “Buy Girls, Bye Boys” stickers. 100% of the profits will be donated to The Sarah Harding Breast Cancer Appeal which is part of The Christie Charitable Fund. ♥️

Sound Of The Underground 20th Anniversary Limited Edition 7” vinyl

To celebrate it’s 20th anniversary, ‘Sound Of The Underground’ is being issued for the very first time as a collectible 7” vinyl. Backed with a never-before-released alternative vocal version of the song from the archives, this limited edition vinyl also comes with a sheet of “Buy Girls, Bye Boys” stickers.

After beating their Popstars: The Rivals competitors to the Christmas Number 1 in December 2002, Sound Of The Underground went on to spend four weeks at the top of the chart, and heralded in a run of 22 magnificent chart smashes that defined a decade in pop.

Strictly limited to 5000 copies.

Girls Aloud and their record company Polydor will be donating 100% of the profits received from the sale of the 7” record ‘Sound Of The Underground’ (meaning income received less actual costs) to The Sarah Harding Breast Cancer Appeal which is part of The Christie Charitable Fund, subject to a minimum payment of £5 for each 7” record sold in the UK

 I ordered so fast!

I can't help but wonder if this is the beginning of a Girls Aloud vinyl reissue campaign. Them having their own music store again could suggest that there'll be more items eventually? I really hope so!

Love that they're marking the anniversary of this iconic single and I hope it sells really well. The sheet of stickers is a nice touch, such a legendary slogan. :cheeseblock: Also very intrigued to hear the alternative vocal version.

Probably won’t be purchasing this but it’s great to see them marking the 20th anniversary of this legendary debut single and it’s obviously a lovely tribute to Sarah. I too hope this is a sign they may embark on re-releasing their albums on vinyl (which I definitely would be buying).

I will have to buy this since it is going towards such a great cause, plus it looks wonderful!!

I hope it means we can look forwards to their albums being released on vinyl I'd love to own them all!

Can you believe Sound Of The Underground is 20 years old this year?! 🤯 To mark this occasion, we’re releasing a limited edition 7” vinyl to raise money for The Sarah Harding Breast Cancer Appeal which is part of The Christie Charitable Fund. You can order your copy through the link in my bio. Each copy comes with a free sheet of ‘Buy Girls, Bye Boys’ stickers and on the b-side you’ll find a never before released alternative version of the song where we all swap singing parts! #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth 💕💕

:o That's intriguing! I'm wondering who'll take which part!!

Didn't the girls used to sing the entire song and Xenomania would decide who would sing each part in the final version? I guess that's how this alternative take came about.

It's heartwarming they're doing so much to honour Sarah

I wonder if the vinyl sales plus downloads and streams it may get that week could be enough to see it re-enter the chart? Obviously that's only a bonus.

That's right! Occasionally we've heard other alternative takes, although we shouldn't have heard them:

Radio stations once played a version of Sound of the Underground without any Kimberley vocals on it. See the Day with only Nadine's vocals was played once. Radio rips exist of both. The Promise was played with Nadine singing Nicola's part instead: I got my hands all ready to touch your soul - I'm gonna get the energy to wire me close to you - Got my eyes on the prize I see - Are you watching me, baby? but unfortunately only a bad quality recording exists of someone filming the radio in their car. (I'm wondering how all these radio mishaps were able to happen lol).

Kimberley actually referenced the existence of that version of Sound of the Underground in her autobiography. I guess somehow a radio station was sent the wrong version instead of the final mix.

I've since discovered that the people at our record label, Polydor, and the producers of Popstars had considered almost every combination of the six but never once considered a line-up without Javine. For them, it was really about her. Consequently, she was over the original recording of the song, and in almost every one of the cover shots for the single sleeve. Apparently, they were gobsmacked when Javine wasn't chosen that Saturday night, and they had to scrabble around to find the best photos of the rest of us together. Then Cheryl was dispatched straight back down to the recording studio to re-record all of Javine's parts, because we were due to shoot the video on Monday.

When we finally heard the finished single, however, I wasn't on it at all – I didn't have a single line – so when it came to rehearsing our choreography for the video, I burst into tears in front of everyone ... In the end, the producers did a quick re-mix of the song so that I had some solo lines on it, but who was singing what on our singles was often an issue after that, as it is in many pop bands.

A Beautiful Cause You Love Me lyric video was initially uploaded to Girls Aloud's YouTube channel which had Nadine singing a verse, but it was quite swiftly made private and then replaced with the version that we know from the Ten album.

There's even a version of No Good Advice that leaked which only has Nadine on the verses! Plus the outro is only Nicola and Sarah.

Unfortunately I think that's too much of a tall order because the threshold to go Top 100 becomes higher than usual. I think it could be close to 7,000 sales needed to go Top 100 in the week before the Christmas chart?

Going off old data it seems that Sound of the Underground usually manages a little over 1,000 sales a week (I wonder if that picks up a little bit at Christmas time because of Christmas #1 association?) and with ACR applied that would be halved. There's 5,000 copies of the vinyl, some of which will be purchased by non-UK fans.

At the very least it'll be nice to see it do as well as possible in the sales and physical charts

Radio stations once played a version of Sound of the Underground without any Kimberley vocals on it.

Savage!

Thanks for sharing Jay, I don't think I was aware of any of those specific examples! It's pretty sad to hear what happened to Kimberley tbh, they definitely favoured Cheryl and Nadine most in those early days, although I think Nicola was sidelined even more (she only has one line that it's repeated once more in 'Sound of the Underground', for instance). Nadine is the obvious lead for the group but I'm glad things became more balanced as time went on in terms of how vocals were distributed. All of them bring something vocally to the table.

Didn't the girls used to sing the entire song and Xenomania would decide who would sing each part in the final version? I guess that's how this alternative take came about.

absolutely... i think it was with all producers they worked with as 'Beautiful Cause You Love Me' had a different version that leaked where other people sang others parts. I believe Kimberly has more in the final version than the leaked version

Pre-Ordered!!

So happy they’re shipping to Canada so I’m not missing out.

Has a version with Javine ever leaked?

I want to glimpse into the parallel universe where Javine was voted in.
