October 28, 20222 yr From the top 10, the best ones are Everywhere, Don't Stop Me Now, Africa and Bohemian Rhapsody. Thanks to everyone who posted the updates.
October 28, 20222 yr This was great, but of course it’s really meaningless without the Xmas songs included.
October 28, 20222 yr https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001dyq4 Radio 2 are doing this for the 1950s Presumably we’ll get a 1960s programme later… This is also now confirmed, Radio 2 will be doing an hour long show for each decade of the chart in November! Sat 12 Nov, 03:00-04:00 - Most streamed songs of 1952-1959 Sat 12 Nov, 07:00-08:00 - Most streamed songs of 1960-1969 Sat 12 Nov, 22:00-23:00 - Most streamed songs of 1980-1989 Sun 13 Nov, 00:00-01:00 - Most streamed songs of 1990-1999 Sun 13 Nov, 16:00-17:00 - Most streamed songs of 1970-1979 Radio 1 also has an hour show for 2000-2010 from 02:00-03:00 on Fri 11 Nov and 2011-2022 from 02:00-03:00 on Fri 18 Nov! (A shame they couldn't choose a better time of day for it but the idea is that these will all be available as a collection on BBC Sounds)
October 28, 20222 yr Noel Gallagher's reaction: “Am I surprised to see Wonderwall at the top of this chart? No. The first two Oasis albums and all the big hits from them are generally up at the top of these charts of the greatest songs of all time. That said, every time I play Wonderwall it brings the house down and I can’t explain it - it’s a magic thing, a magical, magical thing. Although I’d rather have Don’t Look Back In Anger there frankly, better lead vocal...” In full agreement there!
October 28, 20222 yr Oh and putting 'Summer of 42' earlier instead of 69 :kink: getting it's peak mixed up with the number there. It's been a fun week following this and so many pleasant surprises which make up for an predictable top 2 lmao! Thanks Jim, Julian, Dan and anyone else that filled in recaps and positions alongside myself. Hah! I actually prefer Summer of 42 (Biddu) to the vastly over-rated Summer of 69. It was Live Aid that made that track and it just never stopped after that :D The top end was very predictable, though I still thought Bo Rap would edge Wonderwall. Very interesting reading this thanks all! :yahoo: Looking forward to some proper totals for the decades, but they better include Xmas songs, it'll be the run-up to Xmas and it's just nonsense to exclude them. I mean if Mariah is the most-streamed song of the 90's then she should be there grabbing the title from Oasis.....that'll put Noel's nose out of joint, so worth it just for that. Mind you it's unlikely isn;t it? 6 weeks streaming each year can't outdo 12 months?
October 28, 20222 yr As promised the stats: 70s: 74 80s: 105 90s: 121 Although 9 of those 90s were 00s hits really. So 90s not that far ahead in the end and 80s really came back strongly in the upper half. Peak positions: #1 68 #2 35 #3-5 55 #6-10 57 #11-20 25 #21-40 24 #41-75 8 N/A 28 So that suggests the Top 10 caught about 70% of the good stuff.
October 28, 20222 yr Non-Charting Songs in the Top 300 - #11 The Chain - Fleetwood Mac #35 You Make My Dreams - Hall & Oates #55 Champagne Supernova - Oasis #57 Take Me Home, Country Roads - John Denver #79 We Will Rock You - Queen #92 Piano Man - Billy Joel #137 Hungry Eyes - Eric Carmen #147 Landslide - Fleetwood Mac #161 Edge of Seventeen - Stevie Nicks #171 Send Me On My Way - Rusted Root #177 Hooked on a Feeling - Blue Swede #181 She’s Electric - Oasis #183 Come and Get Your Love - Redbone #184 Under the Sea - Samuel E Wright #259 Where Is My Mind - Pixies #271 Shook Ones - Mobb Deep #277 You’ve Got a Friend in Me - Randy Newman #279 Immigrant Song - Led Zeppelin #281 Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd #283 I Just Can’t Wait to Be King - Jason Weaver / Rowan Atkinson / Laura Williams Edited October 28, 20222 yr by chartjack2
October 28, 20222 yr The Chain, Hungry Eyes, Edge of Seventeen and Hooked On A Feeling have at least charted in the top 100 though, just not top 75.
October 28, 20222 yr Non-Charting Songs in the Top 300 - #11 The Chain - Fleetwood Mac #35 You Make My Dreams - Hall & Oates #55 Champagne Supernova - Oasis #57 Take Me Home, Country Roads - John Denver #79 We Will Rock You - Queen #92 Piano Man - Billy Joel #137 Hungry Eyes - Eric Carmen #147 Landslide - Fleetwood Mac #161 Edge of Seventeen - Stevie Nicks #171 Send Me On My Way - Rusted Root #177 Hooked on a Feeling - Blue Swede #181 She’s Electric - Oasis #183 Come and Get Your Love - Redbone #184 Under the Sea - Samuel E Wright #259 Where Is My Mind - Pixies #271 Shook Ones - Mobb Deep #277 You’ve Got a Friend in Me - Randy Newman #279 Immigrant Song - Led Zeppelin #281 Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd #283 I Just Can’t Wait to Be King - Jason Weaver / Rowan Atkinson / Laura Williams How many of these had UK releases at the time I wonder? I suspect in these cases it's not so much that the public got it wrong, but the artist/label in picking the singles. Then again, with the Oasis songs, that album was so legendary, what singles would you drop? Maybe Champagne Supernova in place of Roll With It. My favourite non-single from that album is She's Electric. As for the 50+ songs that were released and charted outside the top 10, you have to wonder in many cases what it is that didn't resonate with people enough at the time.
October 28, 20222 yr I think Oasis could have released another single after DLBIA from Morning Glory, probably Champagne Supernova - particularly as Be Here Now wouldn’t be out for well over a year.
October 29, 20222 yr I know the two Oasis songs, We Will Rock You (pre the version we don't discuss) and Immigrant Song were never released as UK singles.
October 29, 20222 yr I think Oasis could have released another single after DLBIA from Morning Glory, probably Champagne Supernova - particularly as Be Here Now wouldn’t be out for well over a year. They could have released Champagne Supernova as a single in August 96 to coincide with Knebworth. It was probably thought there was no need for a fifth single from an already enormously selling album though, even if it would have been another top 5 certainty.
October 29, 20222 yr 'Summer of 42' not being a top 40 hit really is mystifying! Omg this tbh f_m1UV1eMAE :kink: ~ Thanks to all who have documented this, I didn't tune in for any of the shows so just catching up on the thread each day! Expected top 2 ofc (and both are well deserved classics which are immune to overplay imo) although my favourite in the top 10 is actually 'Africa' which I did not have any clue was THAT big on streaming! I'd have predicted it to be top 40 or so maybe but never #3 :o the taste though. Far too many other classics to name them all from the last batch of songs of course but a shoutout as well to 'Californication', 'Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)', 'Back In Black' (really should be AC/DC's highest but eh), 'Bitter Sweet Symphony', 'Gangsta's Paradise', 'Billie Jean', 'Go Your Own Way' (really all of the Fleetwood Mac songs in the top 20 tbh), 'Take On Me' and 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' to name just a few that are among my biggest faves. <3 <_< at both of the Biggie songs in the top 60 being skipped. Regardless of the audience of the station it's on there shouldn't be any excuse to skip something as high as #29 in a countdown like this imo.
October 29, 20222 yr Omg this tbh f_m1UV1eMAE :kink: I dont know how I missed this album release! That track is now in my itunes basket, and George Takei will no doubt support it (being a Japanese American interned camp survivor)...
October 29, 20222 yr Non-Charting Songs in the Top 300 - #11 The Chain - Fleetwood Mac #35 You Make My Dreams - Hall & Oates #55 Champagne Supernova - Oasis #57 Take Me Home, Country Roads - John Denver #79 We Will Rock You - Queen #92 Piano Man - Billy Joel #137 Hungry Eyes - Eric Carmen #147 Landslide - Fleetwood Mac #161 Edge of Seventeen - Stevie Nicks #171 Send Me On My Way - Rusted Root #177 Hooked on a Feeling - Blue Swede #181 She’s Electric - Oasis #183 Come and Get Your Love - Redbone #184 Under the Sea - Samuel E Wright #259 Where Is My Mind - Pixies #271 Shook Ones - Mobb Deep #277 You’ve Got a Friend in Me - Randy Newman #279 Immigrant Song - Led Zeppelin #281 Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd #283 I Just Can’t Wait to Be King - Jason Weaver / Rowan Atkinson / Laura Williams The Chain was used as a TV theme for decades and then took off in Guardians Of The Galaxy 2, so it's stayed fairly well-known despite not being a single, plus Rumours is as popular as ever. Hall & Oates, film, Oasis was a B side (I bought it), Queen was a double A side in all but name - it got airplay, I preferred it to Champions, and it def contributed to sales of the single, so to all intents its a number 2 hit (actual double A in the USA). John Denver song was a hit for Olivia Newton John (and others later) in 1973, Eric Carmen film, Edge Of 17 see Miley Cyrus and Destinys Child, Rusted Root film?, Blue Swede and Redbone both Guardians Of The Galaxy, but Jonathan King charted Hooked 3 years before Blue Swede, Redbone got no UK airplay in 1974 (despite having a monster 1971 hit) ditto Blue Swede as it had already charted for JK. Sea, Friend, King all movies, Led Zep never promoted and didnt do singles in the UK, Immigrant Song since been in films, ditto Pink Floyd and Comfortably Numb was a hit for Scissor Sisters which introduced the song to me 30 years late, which is why I guess its better known today. Another Brick and Money used to be the best known Floyd songs during the 70's, excluding the early hits in the 60's. Landslide is just gorgeous, and (Dixie) Chicks covered and its on Greatest Hits, but never a single and got no airplay at the time. Never heard of the Pixies or Mobb Deep tracks, so they are genuine surprises... :o
October 29, 20222 yr Have created a Spotify playlist for this - struggling to do the link properly but guess it works just pasting it like this. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5AP2ECyOA...DSaWHGNWTJ2P3Nw Maybe this will be more popular than my Worst Ever #1 playlist. Edited October 29, 20222 yr by Ghoul Jules
October 29, 20222 yr ^ for future reference if you want to embed a playlist here, the formatting would be like this: [spotiplaylist]playlist/{insert junk from the playlist URL}[/spotiplaylist] The junk in this case being '5AP2ECyOARse1J466vQYqK' (you don't need anything after the question mark in the URL).
