Orbital have a new album on the way.

Arriving February 17th on London Recordings, Optical Delusion marks the Hartnoll brothers' tenth studio album, and their first since 2018's Monsters Exist. Across ten tracks, the pair deliver a record of ravey techno, trance and breakbeat. The album features a range of collaborators, including Penelope Isles, Anna B Savage, The Little Pest, Dina Ipavic, Coppe, The Mediaeval Baebes and Sleaford Mods, with whom they produced the first single, "Dirty Rats."

In a press release, Paul Hartnoll describes the track as an "old school dance music vibe with bits of Cabaret Voltaire in there, even bits of The Shamen. It's a little bit punk rock, nice and loud."

"I guess it's about telling people to take responsibility for their own actions," adds Phil Hartnoll. "You know, all these politicians don't come from out of nowhere. Somebody keeps voting them in. So who might that be…?"

Earlier this year, Orbital released a retrospective LP of reworks, remixes and new material, 30 Something, which saw the likes of Logic1000, John Tejada, Jon Hopkins and Shanti Celeste among others contributing remixes.

Oh yes I heard 'Dirty Rat' on 6Music earlier - even a crazily hectic work day couldn't pull me away from paying attention to those on point lyrics

I’m pretty disappointed by the new one. It’s nothing new from them and, whilst I can appreciate the intent of the rhyme for COVID, it’s a pretty irritating and kinda novelty inclusion

New one was good too, I think I prefer the visuals to the song tho!

I heard Dirty Rat a few months ago though and wondered if there'd be a thread, so consider this some late appreciation, what a tune

Album is out now and has an aggregate score of 76 on AOTY based on 10 critic reviews.

The whole release has been surprisingly low key. They're on barely any Spotify playlists from what I've seen. Only saw 'You Are the Frequency' on NMF Dance.

'Are You Alive?' video:

I'm liking 'Day One' quite a bit on first listen. It's probably the most classic Orbital sounding track on here

Just checked this out and 'Day One' was my favourite too *.*

New single The Crane from the forthcoming 'Optical Delusion' repack

The expansive electronic track features plaintive piano, scratchy strings and the celestial voice of classical singer Dina Ipavic, who as a member of the New York Choral Society has sung for the greats like Luciano Pavarotti, Aretha Franklin and Andrea Bocelli.

“The Crane came about through collaboration with the artist Giles Walker,” says Orbital’s Paul Hartnoll. “I scored his robotic installation piece called ‘Monster’, and within the piece was an Armenian folk song sung by Dina Ipavic. I found it so lovely I tried it over some piano that I’d written for the installation. They went together so beautifully that The Crane was born!”

I'm liking this one quite a bit. It's haunting and pretty. Those scratchy strings and classical vocals are a great combo
