Posted October 23, 20222 yr Madonna Reflects on ‘Sex’ Book Reaction From 30 Years Ago: ‘Now Cardi B Can Sing About Her WAP’ Reflecting on the 30-year anniversary of 'Erotica' and her 'Sex' book, Madonna shared her thoughts about the criticism she faced when they were released. Madonna‘s 1992 album Erotica, released 30 years ago alongside her then-scandalous Sex coffee table book, paved the way for other female artists expressing their sexuality. Reflecting on that 30-year anniversary, Madonna shared her thoughts about the criticism she faced at the time of their release on Instagram Stories on Saturday (Oct. 22). “30 years ago I published a book called S.E.X. In addition to photos of me naked there were photos of Men kissing Men, Woman kissing Woman and Me kissing everyone. I also wrote about my sexual fantasies and shared my point of view about sexuality in an ironic way,” she wrote. “I spent the next few years being interviewed by narrow minded people who tried to shame me for empowering myself as a Woman,” Madonna continued in her note on Instagram. “I was called a whore, a witch, a heretic and the devil.” “Now Cardi B can sing about her WAP. Kim Kardashian can grace the cover of any magazine with her naked ass and Miley Cyrus can come in like a wrecking ball,” Madonna said. “You’re welcome b—-es. 🤡” Article: https://www.billboard.com/music/music-news/...rus-1235159825/ Her post:
October 23, 20222 yr Author Since this post was made, Cardi B has now weighed in and isn't impressed with the post. She has called Madonna a "disappointment" in the following post: @1584174841082482689
October 23, 20222 yr Author Seems to have been resolved now! @1584243543731621890 I think Cardi misinterpreted that Madonna was celebrating how liberal women can be now partly because of how she paved the way. Glad they've talked it through now.
October 23, 20222 yr Yeah, I didn't read it at all like she was "dissing" them. It was more cheeky like Cher saying "follow this, you bitches".
October 24, 20222 yr i think its really racially insensitive of Madonna to write that tbh... cardi's struggles as a black artist have nothing to do with madonna.

October 26, 20222 yr WAP, the song Madonna refers to, is literally a song about black female liberation
October 26, 20222 yr WAP, the song Madonna refers to, is literally a song about black female liberation It is? I never knew that, then again I’ve never even heard the song. I assumed it was about vaginas? Hence Madonna’s post which I think it actually a great post good on her for leading the way. I’d argue Cher was doing it all before Madonna too but either way nobody can deny Madonna’s impact!
October 26, 20222 yr Author WAP, the song Madonna refers to, is literally a song about black female liberation How is it literally about black female liberation? What lyrics make it specific to black people? Female liberation sure, but I don't understand how race has come into it? Once again, please explain your point further with evidence to support it?
October 27, 20222 yr it feels quite obvious but will state it anyway... Hip-Hop historically has been a male dominated genre and any women who have come through have often been criticised for their oversexualised images (Lil Kim, Khia, Trina) and often receive persecutions for such.. they are not seen as their male equals but fall under the male gaze. There's that Lil Kim lyric in 'Can't Hold Us Down' "If you look back in history / The guy gets all the glory the more he can score / While the girl can do the same and yet you call her a whore." It feels quite like a rejuviniation that two black women have come out with a sexually liberated song in 2020, with such history behind them and for some white, pop star to take credit for it. I can see why Cardi was upset as Madonna's journey in the music industry is very different to someone like Cardi's

I can see why Cardi was upset as Madonna's journey in the music industry is very different to someone like Cardi's Again the Lil Kim lyrics have nothing to do with black females but females in general which is the point Madonna was making. Also Cardi has spoken out to say its all good, she clear mistook the intent of the message as if Madonna was slating the female acts and not the people who tried to tear her down for expression of her own sexuality.
October 28, 20222 yr WAP is literally about women having agency over their sexuality. There's nothing implicitly race related about the lyrics at all, so there is no race angle to be played at all in this brief Madonna v Cardi misunderstanding. The disappointment that Cardi B initially expressed in what Madonna said didn't bring race into it either. It was purely from a place of female artists having respect for each other, and Cardi didn't find "bitches" respectful (but I feel she misinterpreted Madonna's intention with that).

October 28, 20222 yr not sure its really any of our places to distinguish if a black woman's song details a black womans struggle or not.
October 28, 20222 yr not sure its really any of our places to distinguish if a black woman's song details a black womans struggle or not. Isn't that what you did in the first place?
October 28, 20222 yr Isn't that what you did in the first place? Quite! not sure its really any of our places to distinguish if a black woman's song details a black womans struggle or not. October 29, 20222 yr Come on guys, it's obviously only about black women. Why else would Kylie Jenner and ROSALÍA have cameoed in the video?
