Before I saw the year I thought for a second that was Cheryl's 'I Don't Care' - if that had come from the same person responsible for 'Payphone' that would have been a warcrime :P

Didn't realise Ina Wroldsen's mainstream success went back that far!

Nice to see Ina Wroldsen on the list. I love her voice and she's released some great stuff in her own right - 'Strongest' and 'The Sea' in particular are amazing tracks and her 'Matter Of The Mind' EP from last year is also worth a listen.

Surprises there from Ina wrolsden and Shellback, I didnt know they'd had so many big co-writes! Clean Bandit calling in help was a surprise....

Sting basically wrote the hook of the Puff Daddy monster, though, it was the core of the record :o

Chart toppers:

• Millennium (1998)

• It’s Only Us (1999)

• Rock DJ (2000)

• Eternity (2001)

• Road To Mandalay (2001)

• Real To Me (2004)

His fortunes chart wise were pretty much tied to Robbie Williams, but prior to their meeting in 1997, he was in a group called the Lemon Trees and wrote with a certain Cathy Dennis. He worked exclusively with Williams during the latter’s golden period building up 5 chart toppers before they both agreed to go separate ways in 2003 after which only a Brian McFadden collaboration added to his tally.

Chart Toppers:

• Queen Of My Heart (2001)

• You Said No (2003)

• Shine (2007)

• Please Don’t Let Me Go (2010)

• Dance With Me Tonight (2011)

• Troublemaker (2012)

A man that has been very fortunate to have a 10+ career of writing chart toppers. He’s managed to get his songs to the top with Westlife, Busted, Take That, and Olly Murs. His first top 10 as a writer was with Ultra in 1999 (“Rescue Me”) and was last there with 5 Seconds Of Summer in 2014.

Chart toppers:

• California Gurls (2010)

• Dynamite (2010)

• Part Of Me (2012)

• How We Do (2012)

• Roar (2013)

• I Don’t Care (2014)

Another singer who found greater success as a writer. Half her tally comes from working with Katy Perry whom she had known pre fame, an introduction to Dr Luke also helped her to work with some big names in the early 10s.

Guy chambers was great for Robbie and vice versa. A Lemon Trees bandmate used to run an indie record shop near me back in the day. Its still going aa far as i know!

No 81- Ne-Yo (6)- 9 Weeks

Chart toppers:

• So Sick (2006)

• Take A Bow (2008)

• Closer (2008)

• Beautiful Monster (2010)

• Give Me Everything (2011)

• Let Me Love You (Until You Learn To Love Yourself) (2012)

Easy to forgot that Ne-Yo wrote Mario’s biggest hit “Let Me Love You” which led him to a recording contract with Jay Z’s “Def Jam” records, Jay Z obviously knew a talent when he saw it and within a year Ne-Yo was No 1 in his own right. He co-wrote all of his own chart toppers and even gave Rihanna “Take A Bow” which again went all the way. Although often seen as an Usher copy he’s actually wrote double the amount of chart toppers of him.

Chart toppers:

• Going Underground (1980)

• Dreams Of Children (1980)

• Start (1980)

• Town Called Malice (1982)

• Precious (1982)

• Beat Surrender (1982)

OK so he’s this high under a slight cheat of the threat (there’s 2 double A-Sides in there and after all who can hum “Precious” or “Dreams Of Children”?) but them’s the rules. Of course he’s revered as the “Modfather” and one of the main inspirations behind Britpop.

Chart toppers:

• What About Us? (2013)

• Black Magic (2015)

• Shout Out To My Ex (2016)

• I’ll Be There (2018)

• Solo (2018)

• I’m Good (Blue) (2022)

Known professionally as Kamille she has a masters in Economics and was a vocal coach on X Factor! She is also a singer herself but has had big success writing a chart topper for The Saturdays (which many thought impossible) and formed a close relationship with Little Mix but you can also hear her songwriting on singles by Cheryl, Mabel, Union J, Westlife and Jax Jones!

It never occurred to me before that Ne-Yo wrote Mario's 'Let Me Love You' and then had a #1 with another completely unrelated song called 'Let Me Love You' (albeit with an additional part in brackets). Although from what I understand of the latter, it was Sia who came up with the lyrics for the chorus and the song subsequently took its name from that.

An icon!!! "American Girl" her solo single is a 10/10 bop.

Oh yeah, I'd completely forgotten about 'American Girl', total bop!

No 78- Beyonce Knowles (6)- 11 weeks

beyonce-knowles-medium.jpg

Chart toppers:

• Independent Women (Part 1) (2000)

• Survivor (2001)

• Crazy In Love (2003)

• Déjà vu (2006)

• Beautiful Liar (2007)

• Telephone (2010)

From Girl group to solo star to culture icon- of course Beyonce was going to be on the list. She’s had her hand in every one of her chart toppers. Her decision to release music is less convention ways over the last 10 years has led to the well of chart topping singles drying up though of course she showed she was still capable in 2022 when she went to No 2.

No 77- Lady Gaga (6)- 13 weeks

Chart toppers:

• Just Dance (2009)

• Poker Face (2009)

• Bad Romance (2009)

• Telephone (2010)

• Shallow (2018)

• Rain On Me (2020)

It’s a list that rewards songwriters so Lady Gaga makes it having a hand in all her chart toppers. Many thought her chart topping days were over after the first rush of fame but she’s proved more resilient than some thought and patiently waited over 8 years to make it again.

No 76- Jason Derulo (6)- 14 weeks

Chart toppers:

• Replay (2010)

• In My Head (2010)

• Don’t Wanna Go Home (2011)

• Talk Dirty (2013)

• Want to Want Me (2015)

• Savage Love (2020)

I didn’t know (or I’d forgotten) that Derulo’s first writing credit on a No 1 was on Iayz’s “Replay”, anywhere there it is. He was helped considerably by being one of Lady Gaga’s opening acts on her “Monster Ball Tour” in 09/10 in the US.
