It's not inherently a Christmas song, no, but Lily's version is connected strongly with Christmas through the John Lewis advert, so it's a Christmas song to all intents and purposes. East 17's Stay Another Day isn't technically a Christmas song either, just very winter-adjacent.

You don’t see Slow Moving Millie’s version of PPPLMGWIW and Bastille’s version of CFTF being classed as Xmas songs despite both being John Lewis songs in 2011 and 2019, respectively

Oh, Amazon plays Brena Lee ALL THE TIME, usually as the first somg, if you ask for Christmas music. Assuming Spotify does the dsme, then no wonder it is so high. It is so short and inoffensivez I don't skip it, and I think it'll be the same for most people.

Cos they were flops with shitty adverts and didn't capture the Christmas zeitgeist the same way.

Well Spotify is not Alexa doesnt play you songs when you ask 😅😅😅

But it sticks her at the top of Xmas playlists and it's as inoffensive and short on Spotifee as it is on Alexa!

Sure but its not the same

Can someone post the top 5/10 with figures

Cannot access the data

Because they weren't anywhere near as big? Lily arguably has the biggest and most recognisable John Lewis advert song.

01 2,669,539 Wham!

02 2,492,635 Brenda Lee

03 2,410,755 Mariah Carey

04 2,410,755 Bobby Helms

05 2,130,871 Michael Bublé

06 2,093,376 Andy Williams

07 1,944,956 Band Aid

08 1,624,665 Paul McCartney

09 1,612,701 Ariana Grande

10 1,607,303 Dean Martin

27 songs over 1m is a new record I’m sure, last 2 Christmas it’s been 23.

Also the whole top 50 over 500k must also be a first

There’s a second version of Brenda Lee in the chart and combined it’s only about 5k behind Wham! I think!

Yes

They didn't prefer that terrible Easter dirge until a few years ago when the OCC started buildinf it up in a sexist attempt to forever deny Mariah the #1!!! Like how they acted vs God Save The Queen a few decades before. Now it id YUGE, biggest Xmas song, and Mariah only sneaks a week or 2 at no.1 due to Whamaggedon, where people purposefully avoid Wham for as long as possible for a social media challenge at the beginning of December. Whamaggedon's effects are also getting smaller and smaller as the dirge gets bigger and bigger, becoming inescapable :( Poor Mariah.

Blimey Brenda breaking up the top 2 of Mariah and Wham!

I’m guessing the UK doesn’t like AIWFCIY as much as it used to.

Wow at Brenda Lee <3 we love to see it!!
#1 non-Xmas song on Spotify is Lily Allen’s version of SOWK which is NOT a Xmas song. I’d love for someone to tell Keane that SOWK is a Xmas song

It’s only in the chart because it’s Christmas, like it or not!

(And both those Bastille and Slow Moving Millie cover versions you mentioned both have a noticeable uplift in streams around this time).
