One of my favourite surprise hits awarding to us by TikTok in 2022 was 'Boyfriend' that gained a top 10 peak after releasing signed CDs and I bought a copy when they dropped the price down to £1.99 with free shipping. My first purchase of a physical single for a long time. The lower register, 'darker' style of soft-singing that Dove employs here really seems to have caught on in the past few years with a few hits of a similar style. I'm not really sure why but I didn't go back to this much in the second half of the year that has cost it a few positions here but I plan on rectifying that and put it in rotation again.

28. Rebecca Black - Crumbs

Dove Cameron's EOY History:

I never thought Rebecca Black would have a huge hit in my charts but here we are. It took a couple of listens but the production on this is great and wasn't to be denied. I love the hyper-pop elements, especially in the bridge that sounds straight off a Charli XCX Pop 2 era track. Rebecca is going on tour in a few months and tickets are only £14.50 and this track is so good I was considering going just to hear this. I decided against it in the end but I probably would have gone if I had someone who would go with me. This is still in my top 3 per my newest chart yesterday which shows this had all the potential to land much higher had it been released earlier in the year. I wouldn't rule out this eventually climbing to #1 either, especially with an album out soon.

27. Tate McRae - She's All I Wanna Be

2nd Single from 'I Used To Think I Could Fly'

Release Date: 4th February 2022

Chart Run: 6-3-3-6-10-9-12-15-17 (9 weeks)

Official Peak: #14

End-Of Year Points Chart: 26 (25/100)

Crownnote Points Chart: 28 (27/100)

Last.fm Chart: 16 (15/100)

How could I ever compete with that?

Tate McRae's Chart History:

2021 02 Feel Like Shit

2022 03 She's All I Wanna Be

2022 01 What Would You Do?

2022 04 What's Your Problem?

2022 05 Don't Come Back

2022 06 You're So Cool

2022 13 Hate Myself

2022 12 Uh Oh

Tate McRae's EOY History:

2021 28 Feel Like Shit

2022 27 She's All I Wanna Be

2022 68 You're So Cool

2022 73 What's Your Problem?

2022 76 Don't Come Back

I'm glad that this became a long-running hit for Tate and meant that 'You Broke Me First' isn't her only hit as that was one of her weakest. Just like in the 'Feels Like Shit' video, Tate highlights how brilliant of a dancer she is as she first rose to fame on ' So You Think You Can Dance'. I love this track but I can't help but feel like it could have been any better if they went a bit harder with the instrumental in the chorus. The verses do a brilliant job of building the tension up and the chorus doesn't feel as euphoric as I was expecting. This is why this is only #27 for 2022 while 'Good 4 U' was my #1 of 2021.

J. Cole got what was unbelievably only his 2nd #1 in my charts last year with his feature on Bia's 'London'. He's my favourite rapper and his verse on here is the evidence for this and is probably my favourite verse of the year. The multisyllabic schemes that run throughout the whole verse are insane and the T.I. bar is the one that made me laugh most in 2022. The faux-British accent is honestly better than most from Americans and you have to appreciate that both artists show enough love to the UK to actually use some of the proper words (trainers, innit) instead of just filling the track with a bunch of Americanisms and just saying 'London' once. Bia is quite superfluous on her own track though unfortunately. Her parts are fine but I'm here for Cole and Cole only.

Love both Sweetest Pie and Anti-Hero and "Fast Times" is a bop too

Your description of “Angry Woman” has me very excited to listen to it for the first time!

Giving Typa Girl a listen - sounding interesting! Sounds very 'them' if you get what I mean, and I could probably get used to the instrumentation!

I definitely see what you mean with 'Typa Girl'. It's an incredibly Blackpink song

Great picks. I hope I haven't bigged up 'Angry Woman' too much now

It might only be a soundtrack single from a movie's soundtrack but this was Madison's first release since I met her on her tour and so my anticipation was so high for any new music. The song feels like a pretty perfect fit for the movie with the instrumentation doing a brilliant job of racking up the tension with the piano mixed with the electrical elements making it sound so epic.

2022 100 Voltage

Yay for an EP named after my home county  Itzy seemed to be on a streak of either hitting #1 in my charts or having a very minor hit but this broke the trend completely by missing out on top spot but still being a huge hit, even finishing above their #1 peaking track of the year 'Sneakers'. I wasn't massively sold on it upon my first listen but it ended up being such a grower and an enduring track. I've seem comparisons to Taylor Swift's 'Love Story' and I can hear it but I think this has more than enough charm to stand on it's own merits. I just think this is their nicest release yet with their cutest video and, of course, being their first fully English release helps me connect. I feel like this is going to be the Itzy song I go back to most in the years to come. At times I've thought that 3 different members are my favourite but I think I've finally settled with Lia being my bias and she gets lots of opportunity to shine here.

This is a pretty fun pop-rock track, a genre that seems to be largely missing from mainstream popular culture currently. This is essentially a better version of Avril Lavigne's 'Girlfriend' with the humorous lyrics and frivolous tone. Finishing as high as it has in my last.fm chart is pretty impressive for a track not helped out by being on an album.

Nonsense was not originally a highlight from the album for me; the use of "bleh-blah-bleh-blee" in the lyrics was seriously putting me off. But I eventually got over myself and submitted to what is easily the most fun and self-aware song of 2022. How could you not listen to the outro and smile? And the fact she sang different, new lyrics in the outro for every night on her American tour is hilarious. This re-entered my chart in December after the release of a Christmas version that was almost enough to place it in my top 10 most played tracks of the year. This track is so joyous and I'm so grateful that there's popstars not afraid to release music like this. This finally made an appearance on the Spotify charts yesterday so I'm so excited that this is looking like it's going to be a belated hit.

While it was Boyfriend that smashed charts worldwide, it was actually the follow-up, Breakfast, that have Dove her first #1 in my charts after successive tracks falling just short. This has a killer chorus that cemented its place in my mind throughout the summer. It's a pretty opposite pop song to 'Nonsense', this is all about being dark and moody that suits her unorthodox style of singing. I'm starting to see why she removed 'LazyBaby' and the rest of her earlier music from streaming as she is really finding her own lane releasing this style of track.

What a way to open an album! This feels like such a unique and different style from what we're used to from Taylor and from the first line ("Meet me at midnight") instantly throws us into the new world created by the album. The falsetto chorus is pretty addicting and the little drum beats before the chorus starts always gets me hyped. Pretty random fact but Zoë Kravitz is a credited writer on this track and apparently provides backing vocals.

Hey Lewis :hi: big catch-up time!

My top favourites revealed so far:

30. Sabrina Carpenter - Fast Times

33. The Weeknd - Don't Break My Heart

45. Taylor Swift - Anti-Hero

49. The Weeknd feat. Tyler, The Creator - Here We Go... Again

59. Joji - Glimpse Of Us

64. Charli XCX - Hot Girl (Bodies Bodies Bodies)

74. The Weeknd - Gasoline

77. The Weeknd - Less Than Zero

107. Wet Leg - Chaise Longue

I hadn't really got into Sabrina (quite a few of her songs have been sent to BJSC iirc) but was pleasantly surprised by 'Fast Times', an enjoyably care-free song from her.

Great to see The Weeknd smashing in quite a few EOYs this year *.* I particularly approve of the inclusion of 'Less Than Zero' which sounds like a timeless 'Save Your Tears'-esque moment in waiting  'Anti-Hero' from Taylor also has a really classic synth sound to it. It's been amazing to witness how big it has been for her!

I was happy to see Joji blowing up last year with 'Glimpse of Us' as I've really enjoyed some of his stuff in the past ('SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK' and 'Gimme Love' off the top of my head) - it's a really beautiful song.

'Hot Girl (Bodies Bodies Bodies)' is such a banger! I love the heavy distortion on it and the lyrics are such an earworm. Feels quite underrated with it only being a soundtrack song.

'Chaise Longue' here feels like a bit of a swerve but very happy to see it! A pleasingly quirky song from them with an addictive riff. Hyped for their BRITs performance.

Looking forward to seeing what else pops up in the top 20 ^_^

I love Cate's Brother, it's so much fun! Breakfast is great too though it was all about Boyfriend for me. Dove's got so much potential regardless

I'm glad to see you enjoyed 'Fast Times' at least. It was the song that made me go from a casual fan to a big fan.

Less Than Zero does feel like it has all the potential to blow up in the same way as 'Save Your Tears' and I've been loving Anti-Hero's success too.

Glimpse Of Us is a beautiful track and Hot Girl is a massive tune. I'd agree that it went under the radar with it only being a soundtrack single.

Chaise Longue was pretty unique in my charts (ie not pop or hip-hop) but it's just so fun. I didn't know they were performing at the BRITS this year, I'm intrigued to see it now.

I love Cate's Brother, it's so much fun! Breakfast is great too though it was all about Boyfriend for me. Dove's got so much potential regardless

I'm here for the Cate's Brother love  I agree that Dove feels like she has all the potential to get another hit.

Thank you both :D

The first single from J.I.D's third album, this track highlights everything that makes him special. He uses such unique flows and schemes that sound like no-one else in the business which means that the verses stand out enough to get as stuck in your head as the chorus. However, what originally drew me to this track was the short sung bridge from Baby Tate. Her vocals sound divine and beautifully contrast the rough sounds of 21's verse just before. Tate was originally meant to have a full verse but she got cut short when 21 jumped on the track. Tate then leaked her full verse and I was so excited to hear it but unfortunately the rest of it couldn't live up to the opening lines. I think cutting it to four bars was the best decision in the end. The Aretha Franklin sample that works as the instrumental is a stroke of genius too. I find it quite interesting that this is 21 Savage's 3rd time landing at EOY #19. It's something I had no clue about until I just copied over his Chart History here. We've reached the end of the road for J.I.D and Baby Tate but 21 still has one more entry to come.

2022 18 Mel Made Me Do It

2022 90 Interlude

Mel Made Me Do It might just end up being the most frustrating song of 2022. I honestly think Stormzy has never rapped better than he does over the seven and half minutes of this track but it ended up being the biggest tease with his album having next-to-no rapping on it. He released what I'm now dubbing 'THE brag track' and then gave us an album about singing about God and his girl. MMMDI is epic and everything that the world wants from Stormzy. There' cameos galore (seriously how did he end up with Jose Mourinho and Usain Bolt in the video?) and he directly address the Chip situation for the first time. He keeps the track interesting but constantly switching his flows and I could have honestly listened to a whole hour of this over the eventual album. Building upon my 21 Savage fact in my last post, this is also Stormzy's 3rd time landing an EOY #18. Spooky stuff!

This is the final of four album tracks from 2021's Life Support that have made a belated appearance in these charts, However, Madison does still have one more song to come. This song was not originally a favourite but connected with me so much after her tour. She sits on a swing to perform this one and I was standing right next to it so I got the best view of this track during the show. Lyrically, it's a really interesting track, using a continued metaphor of claiming she is a literal alien to discuses her social awkwardness and difficulty in connecting with others. The song is beautifully sung and has slight country vibes at times. It also has a sample of Rick and Morty for the outro for those with a 'very high IQ'.
