I think it's really embarrassing for any artist of his calibre to be giving away their (purported) signature for 99p.

He said it's a January sale and somebody ordered him 6000 CDs that nobody needed (lol) so LUCKILY FOR EVERYONE he is giving them away at a loss for 99p as it's his own money. It'll be a happy accident when he gets #1

6,000 extra sales wouldn't be anywhere near enough to get him to #1 without a corresponding streaming increase. He'll need to do 'Overpass Graffiti' level CD numbers at least.

He sold thousands more before Christmas that he's held back for the same date.

He’s got 3 x different signed CDs so could be 6k of each? I’m sure they’ll push it hard on his socials too.
IBW is now top 50 on Spotify which could help Cian into the top 40 tomorrow and get his second top 40 hit
CDs singles are so easy and cheap to produce, it's just plastic, pretty sure a CD single costs less than 1 pound to manufacture.

Maybe 20 years ago but costs of materials, production etc change and also demand for CDs isn't as high as it was previously. 99p is ridiculously cheap per unit and I'd imagine he is making a loss.

I just asked my friend who is in a band and they made CDs 5 years ago and the price was 1 Euro per CD

Yes but previously he was selling them at £1.99 with £1.99 for postage. Now it is 99p and FREE postage and that ain't cheap for companies either.

Chwesy Fad always does this!!

5 years ago the world was a very different place

It was a far higher profile show than many of the other artists had over Christmas, and his covers were brilliant and felt much bigger than karaoke.

My point though was more indicative of the market change in general, which I'm still surprised at the collapse of. In the past a huge TV performance like that pulling in millions of viewers would lead people to seek out an album in the shops (even if one wasn't expressly mentioned by the artist - like The Corrs' Talk On Corners after their Royal Albert Hall gig was screened), and a major sales boost usually followed. It's great that he got a sales and streams boost for some of his tracks, it's just a surprise to me that more weren't motivated to check if he had an album - as he did sing four songs from it during the show.

Many people hadn't heard of him eight months ago, but any BBC viewer surely has by now with the amount he's been promoted this year across various shows.

But times and buying habits have changed, I just continue to be surprised by how much. No artist ever seems to get much of an album boost anymore after a big TV performance, which I continue to find odd, as it's such great promotion. He's absolutely fantastic, the album is a brilliant debut, so while he's done impressively, he deserves even more, especially on streaming.

I think the difference is that if e.g. 20k people saw the show and streamed his music afterwards, a song would barely make a dent in the charts due to how many streams make up a single chart sale. Back in the day, if those 20k people bought the song on iTunes it would have given an artist a huge boost and likely Top 10.

Yeah, agreed.

On the flip side I think it’s really good that artists care enough about the charts and doing well when so many seemingly don’t and also try to go against the tide of streaming etc., by giving fans their autograph for £1

Surely it's the record label who cares, I doubt Lewis is the one who gets to decide whether to charge 99p or not. Same goes for all his tweets promoting it, he'll have been told by his team to do it.

I hope RAYE does well with her album she really deserves it and her songwriting is great. She definitely seems to have a fanbase compared to others with one TikTok hit and her songwriting is amazing. So good I said that twice and I didn’t realise. Touring with Lewis just before it’s released should help a little hopefully the press will write something nice about it.

I am not looking forward to Sam Smith’s album it’s going to take over the world and I find them really annoying.

How do you know though? Surely it goes in circles if he releases the physical product and it helps his chart position it’ll mean it’s better for his music in the long run?

The only people who have a problem are those who don’t like the song or artist and it would be a different tune if it was one of their favourites.
