February 6, 20232 yr Hearing the new Depeche Mode in the top 10 sounds quite dated for 1994 with all the Brit pop coming up, still amazing though just not like the other music from bands at the time!
February 11, 20232 yr Author 5TH MARCH Mariah Carey continues at the top uncontested, sales of “Without You” take an inevitable hit of 12% but still sales of 96,000 are nothing to be sniffed at and she continues to do the double with “Music Box” remaining the nation’s favourite album. yvl3ZW6CaRM That isn’t to say there are no threats on the horizon, though it had far too much ground to make up last week Ace Of Base do soar 7-2 (52,000) with a 80% sales increase and could easily challenge Carey next week, it also remains at No 2 in the US behind Celine Dion. Elton John’s “Duets” album has already yielded the No 2 hit “True Love” with Kiki Dee but the pair of course teamed up originally more famously on 1976’s chart topping “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”. For the new album John swapped his recording partner though and chose Rupaul Andre Charles who is better known under the name “Rupaul”, a US drag queen who has risen to fame via the New York club scene into a cult figure. He first was seen our screens as an extra in the video to B-52’s “Love Shack” video in 1990 before launching himself as a popstar last year with two top 40 singles though the biggest “Supermodel” only made No 39. Their version of the old classic rises 13-7 (22,000) this week. -esD-o4XrJ0 Sales are generally down all around with half term over and nothing except Ace Of Base and Elton/ Rupaul registering a sales increase regardless of movement. So though Enigma and Toni Braxton rebound 4-3 (33,000) and 5-4 (29,000) they’re both in decline in sales terms, D:Ream drop 2-5 (28,000) raising the former chart topper’s cumulative tally to an equal 444,000. In the bottom half 2 Unlimited are up 8-6 (24,000), Cappella also see movement north 10-8 (22,000), Bryan Adams/ Sting/ Rod Stewart drop 6-9 (19,000) and Suede prove to be very frontloaded as they slide immediately 3-10 (17,000). 1- WITHOUT YOU- Mariah Carey (96,000) 2- THE SIGN- Ace Of Base (52,000) 3- RETURN TO INNOCENCE- Enigma (33,000) 4- BREATHE AGAIN- Toni Braxton (29,000) 5- THINGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER- D:Ream (28,000) 6- LET THE BEAT CONTROL YOUR BODY- 2 Unlimited (24,000) 7- DON’T GO BREAKING MY HEART- Elton John & RuPaul (22,000) 8- MOVE ON BABY- Cappella (22,000) 9- ALL FOR LOVE- Bryan Adams/ Rod Stewart/ Sting (19,000) 10- STAY TOGETHER- Suede (17,000)
February 11, 20232 yr Author 12TH MARCH Mariah Carey completes a month on top during which time she’s sold 358,000 copies of “Without You” making it already her personal best seller. That included 77,000 last week, but her lead at the top has been slashed to just 10,000 over Ace Of Base’s “The Sign” which sticks it out at No 2 for a second week, it does however finally overcome Celine Dion in the states where it is their first chart topper. Hat1Hc9SNwE Already a major hit across Europe Doop have become something of a dance sensation fusing together rag time Charleston music with techo music to give us a self named track “Doop”. There were apparently 24 labels vying for the UK rights for the song which was already garnering significant airplay but Citybeat triumphed and the single repays the hype by debuting at No 3 (32,000) for the Dutch outfit. tvLDm8821jQ You may already know the M People song “Renaissance” which has been used as the theme to BBC 2’s reality programme “Living Soap” for the last few months, they’ve now plucked the track from their “Elegant Slumming” album and it gives them the fifth consecutive top 10 single and fourth from the album by entering at No 5 (25,000). Bi6802TA-UI It’s taken 12 years from formation to first top 10 single but finally Primal Scream can celebrate making the top echelon of the chart. Lead vocalist Bobby Gillespie was once the drummer of Jesus & Mary Chain before leaving the act to produce critically acclaimed if commercially unsuccessfully music throughout the latter half of the 80s. Their breakthrough came in 1990 with “Loaded” before the album “Screamadelica” became a hit too and earned them the inaugural Mercury music prize in 1992, now they’re back with a new album “Give Out But Don’t Give In” and single “Rocks/ Funky Jam”. The pairing smashes straight into the chart this week at No 7 (23,000) to easily become their biggest hit and illustrates their growing fanbase. PGZ_0auF7P8 Morrissey has been missing from the top 10 for five years now during which time he’s added 10 top 40 singles without getting higher than No 12. New single “The More You Ignore Me The Closer I Get” debuts at No 8 (22,000) to record his 5th solo top tenner and highest since the No 6 position scaled by “The Last Of The Famous International Playboys” over 5 years ago. New album “Vauxhall & I” is out in a fortnight. ucJfUTQWFHQ Toni Braxton holds at No 4 (26,000) as her album reaches a new high of No 13, Enigma fall 3-6 (25,000), and 2 Unlimited reverse 6-9 (21,000) and Reel 2 Real Featuring The Mad Stuntman re-enter the top flight 12-10 (19,000) with radio finally on board. 1- WITHOUT YOU- Mariah Carey (77,000) 2- THE SIGN- Ace Of Base (67,000) 3- DOOP- Doop (32,000) 4- BREATHE AGAIN- Toni Braxton (26,000) 5- RENAISSANCE- M People (25,000) 6- RETURN TO INNOCENCE- Enigma (25,000) 7- ROCKS/ FUNKY JAM- Primal Scream (23,000) 8- THE MORE YOU IGNORE ME THE CLOSER I GET- Morrissey (22,000) 9- LET THE BEAT CONTROL YOUR BODY- 2 Unlimited (21,000) 10- I LIKE TO MOVE IT- Reel 2 Real Ft Mad Stuntman (19,000)
February 11, 20232 yr Doop. Oh lord :drama: I really like that M People song. Although, did it somewhat rip this off? wwk1qc2fs24
February 11, 20232 yr more like shit song alert :) much preferred the Morrissey song back in the day. Not crazy about Rocks or when Primal Scream go all Rolling Stones, much prefer when they do dance music.
February 11, 20232 yr Sales from totp 5 Mar Breathe Again 300k 12 Mar Without You over 500k Rocks is a good song, Rod Stewart later covered it Song from M People is good toio. Elegant Slumming was the first album I bought on CD. Edited February 11, 20232 yr by fiesta
February 11, 20232 yr Author Sales from totp 5 Mar Breathe Again 300k 12 Mar Without You over 500k Yes I noticed that- no idea where the info came from unless they used shipment figures? They are almost always over estimates so might fit shipment tallies from the record company.
February 14, 20232 yr Gutted that The Sign peaked at No.2 here, it really looked like it was about to topple Mariah. I prefer it to All That She Wants, although to this day I still hear both on the radio quite a bit. I don't recall Living Soap, but interesting that the BBC had a reality TV programme on as early as 1993/4.
February 14, 20232 yr it's kinda funny how All That She Wants peaked at #1 in the UK and #2 in the US while The Sign did the opposite and peaked at #2 in the UK and #1 in the US also, their debut was called Happy Nation in the UK but was renamed The Sign in the US Simiarly, album 3 was called Flowers in the UK but renamed Cruel Summer in the US
February 14, 20232 yr They also completely changed Life Is A Flower for the US market to something much blander, with a clunkier wordy chorus, and apparently less European sounding. qkSdP1-GY9s
February 14, 20232 yr They also completely changed Life Is A Flower for the US market to something much blander, with a clunkier wordy chorus, and apparently less European sounding. qkSdP1-GY9s  What is THAT?
February 14, 20232 yr Clive Davis can be blamed for that, he wanted it to be turned into a love song, rather than what it was originally. For me it just turns a great song into a clunky one, very poor writing in the new chorus.
February 15, 20232 yr I was never really that big a fan of 'The Sign' before but it's come on Heart a few times recently and have randomly found myself really enjoying it. Definitely a lot better than 'All That She Wants' anyway. (Although 'Happy Nation' > both) Yass at 'Doop' *.*
February 18, 20232 yr Author 19TH MARCH Experiencing a sales surge of an incredible 180% week on week sees Doop climb 3-1 this week to become the third act from Holland to claim a British chart topper after Pussycat and 2 Unlimited. It repays the faith put in it by Citybeat records and justifies the considerable hype behind the track, it comprehensively saw off last week’s No 1 from Mariah Carey which now slips 1-2 (64,000) but still managed to hold off Ace Of Base who similarly drop 2-3 (55,000) to make way for Doop. osxYOg6J9C4 With “Philadelphia” currently topping the box office here, the theme from the film “Streets Of Philadelphia” arrives into the charts at No 4 (39,000) instantly equaling the previous best for Bruce Springsteen which he achieved 9 years ago with “Dancing In The Dark”. The track comes with a promo which shows Springsteen walking the streets of said city with a live vocal take which is certainly unusual and adds to the rawness of the single. 362SVFvDuYk Achieving only middling chart positions after “There’s No Other Way” made No 8 back in 1991, Blur have gone on to become a band championed by the indie press even if the commercial returns haven’t been great. New single “Girls & Boys” was written by Albarn after a visit to Magaluf and is meant to reflect the hedonistic lifestyle of the club 18-30 holiday maker and the shenanigans they get up to whilst abroad. It comes with a video made by Kevin Godley and a cover taken from the picture on the front of a Durex pack! It instantly becomes the group’s biggest single by debuting at No 5 (27,000). ryi81yf3i-g 1994 continues to be a “Pretty Good Year” for Tori Amos, that’s the name of her new single and her second top 10 smash on the trot as it replicates the debut of “Cornflake Girl” by debuting at No 7 (22,000). Her album “Under The Pink” of course became her first chart topper last month though it falls out of the top 20 this week after 6 weeks of release. gCVk8K2N5q0 Reel 2 Real Featuring The Mad Stuntman continue their revival 10-9 (21,000), it’s run so far has been perfect symmetry 9-10-12-12-10-9, but no good news elsewhere as M People slide 5-6 (23,000), Enigma fall 6-8 (22,000) and Toni Braxton breathes her last dropping 4-10 (18,000) 1-DOOP- Doop (89,000) 2- WITHOUT YOU- Mariah Carey (64,000) 3- THE SIGN- Ace Of Base (55,000) 4- STREETS OF PHILADELPHIA- Bruce Springsteen (39,000) 5- GIRLS AND BOYS- Blur (27,000) 6- RENAISSANCE- M People (23,000) 7- PRETTY GOOD YEAR- Tori Amos (22,000) 8- RETURN TO INNOCENCE- Enigma (22,000) 9- I LIKE TO MOVE IT- Reel 2 Real Ft Mad Stuntman (21,000) 10- BREATHE AGAIN- Toni Braxton (18,000)
