6th December 1993

It's another Bee Gees week on top, holding off Pet Shop Boys and The Doobies as Meat Loaf gets his highest chart placing since Dead Ringer For Love, Peter Sellers finally goes top 10 with his Beatles chuckler 28 years late, Bowie extends his top 10 run to 21 years, with added Lenny Kravitz grabbing a third top 10, and Toni Braxton a first. Back in the UK now and tracks forced out for US holiday hits rebound back, Capella, Dina Carroll, Cilla & Dusty, Goodmen, Mariah Carey and U2 - sort of, as it was the Sinatra/Bono side that got listed last time, and it's the U2 side now.

The Village People remix their eternal party anthem at 21, 32 years later from 1993 and it still gets kids on the dancefloor even if these days I'm sick of hearing it - as a 15-year-old oldie, I was still enoying it. YMCA, it's fun to stay. The first proper new track is the East 17 debut, the bangin' It's Alright at 34, and it really is. K-Klass ask Let Me Show You at 36, one I've not heard in 30 years there - it's a piano-tinkling House dance track, s'alright. Meanwhile wanna be boyband stars Bad Boys Inc (they really not) opt for a US style soul singalong Walking On Air. Forgettably pleasant at 41.

Toni Braxton, follows up Another Sad Love Song at 10 with Breathe Again at 47, a bigger UK hit but not as good for my money, and young Tevin-not-Kevin Campbell pops in a bit lower down. Can We Talk, see Bad Boys Inc, but younger, American and a bit slicker. At 53, Michael Jackson scrapes another album-track single in Gone Too Soon, but it's really quite dull and way less-good than the bonus track Human Nature from Thriller - never a UK single, but revived by SWV sampling it, and I will be listing that side from next week.

UB40, Bring Me Your Cup for almost 14 years of chart action, in at 64, it's quite jolly but doesn't rank amongst their best stuff, and nor does the Prince oldie, Controversy, in at 68 as he is about to unleash The Artist Formally Known As A Musical Genius aka Squiggle oe Symbol. Disappearing up your own to get released from your record label contract can be very counter-productive, as Mr. Nelson is about to find out. Right Said Fred, still dropping singles, Hands Up everyone as 4 Lovers debuts with a 69, ooerr missus.

That leaves Johnny Rotten doing a collab Leftfield Lydon and Open Up 71, Snoop Dogg at 72 with the laid-back groove of What's My Name, not a million miles away from DJ Jazzy Jeff's Summertime in vibes, if not quality. Talking of laid back vibes Lis Stansfield is opting for A Little Bit Of Heaven at 73, one of her lesser hits, as my playlist is still catching up with all the non-UK album CD's I bought in Florida record stores. Happy days, record stores and all that!

It's another chart-topper for Pet Shop Boys, as the quirky I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind Of Thing makes it a hat-trick of Very number ones for a 14th in total as they start to catch up all of the big name acts like Beatles, Abba, ELO and so on. Frankie Goes To Hollywood started with a hat-trick of number ones, and the third of those is back again for a Christmas splash, The Power Of LOve topped in 1984, now at 4, joined by 1978 number one YMCA at 8. Elton adds to his very long list of top 10's with True Love, and Kiki Dee makes it a 4th since 1973.

Gone Too Soon was in last week's charts, but I find out Human Behaviour, as used on SWV's goodie, is on the CD single too, so the Thriller track finally gets a chart place at 20, and well-deserved, making it a 7th from the 1982 album. Mike Oldfield also has some CD oldies out for the Christmas season, In Dulce Jubilo from 1975 and Portsmouth 1976 both Chistmas instrumentals very much in a very old folk style. In at 46, having gone top 10 first time round. At 54, INXS are back with an unlikely collab with veteran Jazz-Blues-Country legend Ray Charles on Please (You Got That). Ray would have featured in my pre-charting hypothetical charts as dad had Hit The Road Jack EP, and I loved I Can't Stop Loving You as a kid, so this is an actual chart span of only 12 years rather than 27.

Chake Demus & Pliers cover Twist & Shout, another kiddie iconic track via The Beatles cover, but The Isley Brothers' track recently went the rap route with Salt 'n' Pepa and now gets the reggae vibes, to pleasing effect at 61. Tag Team are Whoomp There It Is-ing, a catchy chantalong track I enjoy at 68, Dina Carroll goes Andrew LLoyd-Webber at 70, on The Perfect Year, Gabrielle is back with I Wish, Bjork on Big Time Sensuality and Kirsty MacColl on Angel. They are decent enough tracks, but not setting my charts alight in any way, just pleasant.

20th December 1993

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in 1993 as The Bee Gees ignore that and grab a 4th week on top with For Whom The Bell Tolls, as Daryl Hall gets a first solo top 10 some 12 years on from his first, with John Oates, on the Marvin Gaye cover Stop Loving You at 6. Meat Loaf is back in the top 10 with Bat Out Of Hell, 14 years on from the first time, new in at 7, a song that stays ever-relevant and mighty, and just ahead of another Saint Etienne mini-gem top 10, I Was Born On Christmas Day, one which never gets played much these days, very annoyingly. Ina quiet week bad Boys Inc grab a top 10 slot too, who knew?!

It wouldnt be Christmas without Cliff having another go at a seasonal hit, Healing Love not quite as overt as some though, in at 39. New Order drop in with a Spooky track - quite why they missed Halloween who knows, this one is fine but not memorable! In at 58 as lower down, Tasmin Archer sneaks in with a cover of Elvis Costello's Shipbuilding, It's OK but not quite as good as the definitive Robert Wyatt hit version. War remains relevant of course. Ice-T is back with That's How I'm Livin', not one I recall, but it's OK, and a bit more street-cred than Craig McLachlan's cover of Grease (he's starring in the musical show).

Robert Plant covers Tim Hardin's If I Were A Carpenter, a hit for Bobby Darrin and The Four Tops in the US/UK respectively. You can't really fail with that song, it's classy, and just ahead of a huge Christmas hit dirge that isn't: Never liked Babe much, the best thing it had going for it was it wasn't Mr Blobby at least in the UK number one stakes. That leaves me having a Roy Wood christmas concert, a sprinkling of Wizzard Glam tinsel, and some 60's Move flower-power is fine by me anytime.

27th December 1993

It's 6 weeks or so on top for The Bee Gees, no shifting it for the New Year either and no sign anything new is coming along to take over, apart from Soul Asylum finally hitting the top 10 at 7 for the great Runaway Train, after a long-ish chart run. Mike Oldfield's oldies get a festive boost to 15, and the highest new entry is Def Leppard putting on their Glam Rock platform shoes, and covering Sweet's Action from 1975, new in at 35. Not a bad effort, though the original, as is usually the case, is the better.

Peabo Bryson & Regina Bell get the big Disney movie ballad treatment at 46, I mean it's OK and all, but a bit formulaic - albeit one that is still bringing about movie-related hits for new generations. EYC I've forgotten, it's a slice of upbeat funky boyband fluff, not bad and mildly fun, Feelin' Alright at 56 in a Fresh Prince/Jazzy Jeff stylee. Saturn 5 is Inspiral Carpets on form, 60's organ riffs upfront, a bit of electric guitar riffing, and lyric title named an Apollo program massive rocket launcher, I'm bound to like it, in at 57.

REM keep the non-christmassy vibes going with Find The River, at 61, a rather lovely wistful ballad that should have been much bigger - I barely heard it on radio at the time, I caught it late one night half-asleep on Radio One and was quite impressed, but had no way of hearing it much again till times had changed. Still good. Bitty McLean still pleasing me with his catchy reggae, Here I Stand at 66, ahead of Shabba Ranks' Family Affair at 70. Yes, it's Sly & The Family Stone's classic not so much covered as barked and toasted over until it submits and is beyond recognition.

Down in the dregs, Whiney's monster is back for Christmas, K7 chant Come Baby Come - and it's better than Shabba - and Haddaway changes tack and opts for a ballad, I Miss You, and it's a bit dreary, more Milli Vanilli than dance banger. Pass.

And with that, 1993 charts are done. Hooray! My 1994 charts are already online, as is every year going back to 1984, and 1995 is nearly done too. 1968 through to 1974 also completed, 1975 almost done, as is 1980 getting closer to completion, so I can start digging out missing years 1976, 1981 and 1996 from the chart notepads and do them next year.

If I can keep up the pace - dubious as I will be touring New Zealand for a month in February, but I'll give it a go - the following year I can do 1977, 1982, and 1997 and I will be pretty much digitised entirely with some faffing about on a few years, and can have one massive chart database to pick and choose from, and carry on with the late 90's and 00's which wont require much work, just comments. Of course by then the early 2010's will start looking nostalgic as we rollercoaster towards the 2030's....eek!

No change at #1, what was there in Jan 1984 to change that, maybe D:Ream and Enigma?!
