April 28, 20232 yr Yeah, so after sitting with this for a day I do love the album for what it is - Jessie essentially letting loose and feeling like she has nothing to lose and having fun. It’s definitely a lot more kitchy than I’m used to from her, and sometimes I do sadly think some of the tracks edge in pastiche territory, especially ‘Shake The Bottle’ and to a lesser-extent ‘Beautiful People’ which sounds to me like Kylie’s ‘Monday Blues’ just done a little better. However, it does feel very self assured to just go full out and be unapologetically in your face. It absolutely works on gems like ‘Freak Me Now’ and ‘These Lips’ but I do find myself drawn to the more paired back sophisti-pop that she’s known for in songs like ‘Begin Again’ and ‘Lightning’ which is a lovely call-back to the cool sweeping R&B of her first album. Absolutely on board, and even though this is definitely no ‘What’s Your Pleasure’ I’m very glad she’s done a fantastic album to dance to which doesn’t just feel like a Part 2 of the last project.
April 29, 20232 yr This suffers a similar problem to Carly Rae's recent album, in that the first 3 tracks set the mood perfectly and a deathly dull track 4 kills it completely, it's like an inferior version of 'Remember Where You Are'. 'Lightning' really hit me on further listens, it's so gorgeous. Like a worthy successor to 'In Your Eyes'
April 29, 20232 yr Aly I cannot with some of these takes recently, Far Away (Carly) is great! Hold up, I adore 'Far Away'! I was thinking of the wrong one, I meant 'Sideways' Edited April 29, 20232 yr by Jessie Where
April 29, 20232 yr Hold up, I adore 'Far Away'! I was thinking of the wrong one, I meant 'Sideways' Slightly more acceptable! :teresa: As pointed out in the UK charts thread, Jessie has (maybe inadvertently!) riled up The Lottery Winners with this comment: https://uk.style.yahoo.com/want-f-down-jess...-070000709.html Although maybe it's all playful banter from both sides (personally I think the comment about Jessie having a famous parent is a bit more of a jibe than playful, but can't say for sure what the intention was: https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid...100044369471890 ) Seems to have given some extra attention to them though so I wonder if they'll sell more than Jessie?
April 29, 20232 yr Yes, Jessie made the comment at the album launch party I was at in London… It was entirely playful in a room of her fans. The response about her parents seems a little unnecessary. I’m hoping the rebranding from the last albums has given her enough new fans to make sure this opens with a more healthy opening that WYP and can be in contention. Fingers crossed.
April 29, 20232 yr Surely it's fair to assume she's way more famous than her parents on her own merits? What a daft comment!
April 29, 20232 yr It was always going to be difficult to follow-up What's Your Pleasure? but this is incredibly fun and essentially serves as a victory lap for Jessie, a celebration of everything that came about with that album and likely signing off on this era of disco influence/revival for her. It leans in so hard into the influences that made that album such a great record that inevitably I think it does trip up a few times but hardly enough to disrupt the flow on what is a pretty tight and consistent album, so I won't begrudge her not quite always hitting the mark when she's having fun and sounding so happy and confident. I think my favourite is “Begin Again” (could easily have been a lost cut from WYP) which is almost like an alternative title for the record, it is mad to think that she was on the verge of quitting music forever back in late 2017. “Pearls” sounds even better in the context of the album and I'm also - as others have picked out - really enjoying “Freak Me Now”.
April 29, 20232 yr I'll listen to what The Lottery Winners say when they start making good music, Jessie is far superior.
April 29, 20232 yr I’m really enjoying the whole album, not a dud for me on there.. just wish was longer
April 29, 20232 yr I hate how some people are taking this Jessie and Lottery Winners thing... I've seen lots of people on social media going down the typical route of dragging the female person being "a bitch" for her comments but the men being treated as role models just having a bit of a laugh or banter about it :( Either get on board with the behaviour of both or neither! It's obvious to me that her comment wasn't serious and was reported out of context - and I agree with others here that I found the comment about Jessie's background to be more of a personal dig than was strictly necessary. ALSO... agree with our own Jessie that Hello Love kills the vibe of the album, I've taken it out of my playlist for it
April 29, 20232 yr No but it has appeared to be generally Thom who has been posting the social stuff (Not that I want to call him out specifically - I have every belief the whole thing between the two acts is just a laugh)
April 30, 20232 yr What is the apparent missed context of Jessie Ware's quote? Unless she was entirely misquoted I'm not sure how her comment towards The Lottery Winners could be spun as 'inadvertent', it looks pretty direct to me! (Not that that justifies a nasty personal response but it did leave a bit of a bad taste in the mouth ngl, much like slowthai's comment towards The Lathums a few weeks back). All this 'drama'(?) though and at the end of the day it still seems pretty likely none of the acts involved will even get the #1 with Nines also in the mix.
April 30, 20232 yr I don’t care who gets #1 album as long as it ain’t Nines. Shame he didn’t release a week later
