The difference is one doesn’t need to use those tactics to chart. That is what ruffles feathers.

Ed apparently cares about the chart... and lots of other artists (most of who don't stand a chance of making the Top 10 or even Top 40) apparently don't care about chart positions anymore. So Ed puts out CDs or remixes etc to chart higher and keep his albums streaming rate higher so it looks like he's "sold" more and is higher in the Year End Charts.

I guess as it matters to him and it seems to matter to his label, then they are breaking no rules and they are playing the chart game. Anyone else could do the same.

 

Look at the album chart where acts like Steps or The Vamps etc put out multiple CD, vinyl, cassette versions and fans buys them all and get them a No.1, whilst others acts can't or don't put out so many formats so don't chart as high. Is that really any different?

 

I compare it to the 80s/90s where George Michael put out an album but wouldn't do promotion and wouldn't appear in his own music videos. Did it stop him being a chart success? No, if anything it became a bit of a "gimmick" and a newsworthy story and got him a hit. Or acts that would bring out a 7", 12", 7" picture disc, 12" picture disc, two CDs and a cassette. No wonder they had such big hits when fans like me bought one of them every week.

Most of the artists just release songs, shoot a video and leave it there - maybe do a remix at some point. Label does the usual promo and the song charts wherever it charts, it could be #1, top 5, top ten, top 40. Not a big deal.

 

Ed Sheeran, on the other hand, tries to make a non top 10 single a #1 with special gimmicks just to have more #1's (see the Taylor duet from the previous album). Most artists never bother as they know it doesn't change a thing in the big picture.

 

Why do you feel the need to lie to downplay Ed's success? All artists use all sorts of 'tactics' to chart higher, slowed down/sped up versions, remixes, rent a rapper, adding a collab, cd singles/signed singles, itunes discount, lyric videos, live versions and so on.

 

What you just don't like is despite that most artists aren't anywhere near as successful as Ed.

I think someone said here that it got bumped up a load of Spotify playlists in the weekend. I would assume that's probably the reason for the climb. It is suspicious, the likely payola going on with playlist placements, but that's not something that's unique to Ed Sheeran to be fair.

Ed has had big rises worldwide so guessing he's getting his autoplay algorithm moment, thus probably a corresponding big drop coming in about a week. I don't think the UK specific playlist moves would have made that big of a difference.

 

(also looking at the global chart, appears the Korean and English versions of the Jimin song had been combined for the past few days but are now separated, so he's 'dropped out' from #87 but his global numbers are still staying pretty stable combined so probably same in the UK).

 

Jimin hardly has a big chart history, nor do they have easy access to playlist and radio support.

 

 

Even then, he still scraped top 50 with minimal push - acts like Jimin could not.

 

Are you not aware of who Jimin is? :kink: (to be fair the BTS solo material has been generally performing nowhere near as well as their group releases, but this looks to be the biggest one to date).

Unrelated: nice to see Tyler, The Creator entering, this is just a 'B-Side' from his last album (deluxe version dropping on Friday). He has consistently released a new album every 2 years since he started so he's due a new one some time this year, not sure if this deluxe means that pattern is going to be broken this time.
