Innuendo should be top 10, such a great underplayed record. Don't Stop Me Now is vastly over-rated these days. When it came out, and trust me on this, it seemed like a fairly run-of-the-mill Queen record hanging on the coat-tails of Somebody To Love which did it better. Certainly not one of their greats - It must be the movie slots that have made it seem better than it is :o

Interesting to see We Are The Champions is rated lower without We Will Rock You joining it at the hip to give it a boost (top 5 in the UK poll).

9th - I Want To Break Free, 1984

Score: 771

Average score: 38.55

Highest: 50 - Roba.

Lowest: 3 - Smint

Polyhex entry:

14/04/1984 Queen I Want To Break Free 3 18-5-{3}-3-3-4-5-9-15-22-28-41-50-64-70->15

The second single from the 1984 "The Works" album; the video famously included all the members in drag. I'm a big fan, not least because it was #3 in the week I was born.

10th - Don't Stop Me Now, 1979

Score: 769

Average score: 38.45

Highest: 50 - jimwatts, BananasInPyjamas

Lowest: 0 - Smint

It would have finished higher without Sminty's 0, but still wouldn't have been higher than 5th, whereas in the BBC poll and in streaming it places 2nd. I guess as music fans we're perhaps a little more fed up of hearing it everywhere than the public as a whole!

Dot and I confirmed as not music fans :kink: Also how funny that Smint's lowly score of 3 for I Want To Break Free proved decisive in lifting it above this!

I first heard Don't Stop Me Now in 1996 (long before streaming, downloads, Shaun Of The Dead, etc.) and it immediately became a Queen fave for me, but with those things unavailable and a very limited budget for album purchases, I'd only hear it sporadically over the next few years and loved it every time. It's probably the main reason I bought their Greatest Hits in 2000. Clearly many others like me also liked it as its placement began to mushroom. Now it seems you can't go to certain venues without hearing it (along with Mr Brightside). I don't spend much time in those sort of venues anymore so I'm immune to that. I get that it's not for everyone, but it does also feel like it's become a victim of its own success.

Aww now my whole top 3 are out.

Don't Stop Me Now is such an immensely joyous song. I do agree that it's been a victim of its own overplay as the years have gone on (BoRap tea) but it's never killed it for me.

Rooting for The Show Must Go On now.

Don't Stop Me Now seems to be the go-to for bad karaoke on talent shows gone by as well as relentless overplay which has tainted it somewhat, it is still enjoyable though, I feel 10th is a good place for it. I Want to Break Free I'd have had a little bit higher, iconic song and video <3
The McFly cover of Don't stop me now ruined the song for me I have to say :/

i Want To Break Free is a great record, but the video makes it even greater. Such fun! Didn't go down well in the USA, worth noting, as drag not a big attraction in middle America at the time...

Killer Queen I still adore since the day I rushed out to the record shop in Gloucester to buy it as a 16 year old, all fresh and new and very Noel Coward with Rock guitar.

Another One Bites The Dust is a banger, possibly even better than Chic's Good Times and Sugarhill Gang's Rapper's Delight. :teresa:

Another One Botes The Dust had 7 weeks in the top 40 😅 would have had 200 weeks in the current era, far too low a peak!

6th - Somebody To Love, 1976

Score: 789

Average score: 39.45

Highest: 48 - ...ready for it

Lowest: 17 - Smint

Polyhex entry:

27/11/1976 Queen Somebody To Love 2 4-4-{2}-3-4-4-6-13-32->9

This was the lead single from "A Day At The Races", and was held off Number One by Showaddywaddy. It created a gospel choir style sound just from the three singers with multitracking.

Aside from Bo Rhap this isn't the Top 5 I'd have predicted at the beginning!

08/11/75 Bohemian Rhapsody

14/11/81 Under Pressure

04/02/84 Radio Ga Ga

27/09/86 Who Wants to Live Forever

26/10/91 The Show Must Go On

'Don't Stop Me Now' is difficult to judge on its own merits its been so ruined but agreed with Popchartfreak that it was never a good song. Great 'The Show Must Go On' is still there!
Sad to think ‘The Show Must Go On’ would be the final single Freddie witnessed in the charts!

5th - Under Pressure (1981)

8-(1)-1-2-8-16-35-35-38-41-48-/-43 (12 weeks)

Average Score - 39.85

Highest Score - 50 (dandy*)

Lowest Score - 19 (Lukuzz)
