Biography

Even before she dropped her debut single in 2014, Meghan Trainor already had it made. By that point, the 20-year-old Nantucket native had achieved the dream of many aspiring singer/songwriters: to infiltrate the inner sanctum of Nashville’s Music Row. But as it turns out, co-writing songs for country stars like Rascal Flatts and Hunter Hayes was the warm-up for what came next. Upon its release in the summer of 2014, Trainor’s first solo single, “All About That Bass,” swiftly became the most inescapable pop earworm of the year, thanks to a rump-shaking, retro-R&B sound that filled the void vacated by the late Amy Winehouse and a then-dormant Adele. But not only did the song transform Trainor into an instant, cross-generational pop star, its celebration of plus-size physiques made her a spokesmodel for body positivity at a time when there were few such role models in the entertainment industry. (And that motivational ethos would make her a natural choice to judge singing-competition shows like The Voice UK.) With the release of the full-length Title in 2015, Trainor became just the 13th woman in pop history to have both her first single and first album go to No. 1 on the Billboard charts, but on the follow-up, Thank You, she proved she was no mere throwback artist, as singles like “Me Too” and “No” updated her old-school aesthetic for modern-day dance floors. And on 2020’s Treat Myself, she further immersed herself in contemporary club sounds, applying her Aretha-sized sass to the synth-pumped thump of “No Excuses” and EDM-washed “Wave.” But even as her muse has drifted from Motown to Minaj (who turns up on the ASMR&B duet “Nice to Meet Ya”), Trainor’s self-help mission remains on course. “Every message that I give when I’m writing songs, it’s all to me,” she told Apple Music, where she also hosts Dirty Pop Radio. “I keep listening to these songs and I keep having to remind myself, ‘baby girl, love yourself.’” Trainor’s ongoing success lies in her ability to find new and creative ways to translate those personal affirmations into communal anthems. - Apple Music

Biography

“I never really think, ‘OK, I’m going to write a song,’” Lewis Capaldi told Apple Music. “My creative process is basically: I sit down with a guitar and or at the piano, and I just start to write.” But the amazing thing about Capaldi is that he’s become one of the most popular young artists of his generation by preserving his songs in that raw, unvarnished state, to provide the purest representation of the pain and longing coursing through his lyrics. Amid the hyper-paced, totally wired world of late-2010s pop, this unassuming Scottish singer-songwriter and former Up Next artist—born 1996 in Glasgow—stopped the internet dead in its tracks with his DIY 2017 single “Bruises”, a stark, piano-based breakup ballad that introduced a voice imbued with the sort of soulful grit and deeply felt heartache you wouldn’t expect from a baby-faced 21-year-old. “Bruises” was Capaldi’s ticket to international major-label deals and tours opening for pop A-listers like Sam Smith and Niall Horan, but he would swiftly join their ranks with his equally rustic 2018 single “Someone You Loved”, another tear-jerking expression of sorrow—inspired by the death of his grandmother—that went to No. 1 in the US and UK, and has since become one of the most-streamed songs of all time. Those singles formed the foundation of Capaldi’s chart-topping full-length debut, 2019’s Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent, which fleshes out his sound with lush orchestration and gospel gravitas but, through songs like the suicide-themed “Before You Go”, retains his fearless flair for dredging up the messiest of emotions. - Apple Music

Biography

Honing his skills under the #OFB banner, North London rapper Headie One soon became one of drill's most engaging figures, finding national success alongside RV on the back of iconic mixtape Drillers & Trappers. Moving into solo work during the late 2010s, the rapper found his biggest success to date with 2019 mixtape Music X Road, which landed at number five on the U.K. album charts. Rising from the remnants of North London gang Tottenham Mandem, rap collective Star Gang soon became popular on the North London rap scene; the most notable of its members are Tottenham's Headie One (born Irving Adjei) and RV. From day one, the duo's synergy on the mike was evident. Working under the Star Gang moniker through the early 2010s, the pair released early singles like "Youngers from Farm," shifting between more traditional U.K. rap and U.S.-inspired trap for early mixtapes Headz or Tails (Headie One, 2014) and Sticks & Stones (Headie One & RV, 2016). Moving fully into the U.K.'s drill scene, the pair released third mixtape Drillers & Trappers the following year. It was here that the pair truly made their mark: working with producers like MKThePlug and M1OnTheBeat, the duo quickly built a following with their relentless flows and artistic synergy. Marking their singles with the tag #OFB, the duo soon formed drill collective Original Farm Boys, an homage to the Broadwater Farm Estate where they grew up. Headie continued through the late 2010s with a series of individual releases. His second solo mixtape, The One (2018), produced some of his biggest hits to date, with "Golden Boot" and "Know Better" soon becoming drill staples. After closing out 2018 with third tape The One Two, Headie kicked off 2019 with the long-awaited sequel to Drillers & Trappers, enlisting RV's help for the 13-track set Drillers X Trappers II. Heralded by the Top Ten-charting single "18Hunna," the rapper's fourth tape, Music X Road, arrived later that year; with features including Skepta, Dave, and NAV, the release pushed Headie's brand of drill into new, inventive directions. A strong working relationship with producer Fred Again resulted in the late-2019 single "Charades" before the duo linked up in early 2020 for experimental mixtape GANG. Headie's debut studio album, EDNA, arrived in October 2020: comprising a wide portfolio of styles from trap to drill, the project offered a comprehensive account of Headie's life and career, with some of the rapper's most personal writing to date. - Apple Music

Central Cee is proving himself to be one of London’s most exciting emerging artists. Whilst only just turning 22, the rapper had already released a slew of solid tracks in addition to a powerful Next Up Freestyle on Mixtape Madness reflecting the rising star’s versatility and distinctive delivery. Building on this foundation, in 2020, Central Cee has gone from strength to strength dropping two singles ‘Day In A Life’ and ‘Molly’, with both tracks having racked up 8 million audio streams collectively. He’s also gained support from various artists at home and abroad including a co-sign from US rapper Big Sean. Music has been an integral part of Central Cee’s upbringing, dating back to the tender age of 8. His eagerness to create his own musical legacy is deeply rooted within his earliest memories of absorbing the rich sounds of his dad's old school hip hop collection. - Spotify

Oh nice surprise to see 'Snooze' going top 40 - I am a little surprised that's taken off as there are definitely other songs on the album that have more obvious hit potential but I thought 'Snooze' was a mid level highlight of the album from the off and has grown on me considerably since it started charting, reminds me a bit of Childish Gambino's 'Redbone'. (I do like 'Low' even more but at least that is also top 100 now)

Wow at Freya apparently top 40 as well? Did she have some CD sales missing in the mids then?

I hope Caity can get another new entry next week with the Sigala song and it looks like Nathan has missed out. I hope he ain’t at #41
I was worried he was actually gonna play Central Cee there. I couldn't deal with that.

I’ve had a tough week that woulda pushed me over the edge
