March 22, 20232 yr Hmm, and he does yuge tours. But he hasn't been a singlrs chart or oublicity relevant act in yonks...
March 22, 20232 yr Ellie has lucked her way into a No.1 single via Amazon a few years ago and now a big feature. I would say she is relevant, just about, but it’s a grey area despite those hits. Could add Shania Twain? The album didn’t exactly hang around for ages but she’s been everywhere recently as if she’s the star of the moment, and it was a No.1 in a blaze of publicity. Again, it’s a borderline case. I don't know how you can class Ellie Goulding as relevant. Only 2 of her singles from her past 2 albums charted at all. And they were complete flops in the 80s. Being attached to a feature doesn't really count.
March 23, 20232 yr It's so funny looking back at 2008, would anyone imagine 15 years from then that the two acts who'd still be relevant/massive are Adele and Miley Cyrus? Absolutely not! Duffy was the one destined for big things... We all know what followed (Well Well Well)... And then the revelations brought to light a year or two back too. 😔
March 23, 20232 yr Author I don't know how you can class Ellie Goulding as relevant. Only 2 of her singles from her past 2 albums charted at all. And they were complete flops in the 80s. Being attached to a feature doesn't really count. Well, like I said, it’s a grey area. But she is somebody whose last album went to No.1, as will her probable upcoming album, she has a fairly recent No.1 single (notwithstanding the dubious method by which it got there), and a current feature top three (feature or not, she’s pretty integral to the song), she’s regularly in the top 100 most played artists in the world on Spotify and several of her hits from the last five years have racked up hundreds of millions of streams globally despite not peaking that high. I wouldn’t call her irrelevant, considering all those metrics, but sure she’s not the chart star she once was.
March 23, 20232 yr Absolutely not! Duffy was the one destined for big things... We all know what followed (Well Well Well)... And then the revelations brought to light a year or two back too. 😔 Poor Duffy. Rockferry was massive? Gabriella Cilmi was one that had a fair bit of hype too, she faded just as fast.
March 23, 20232 yr from your list I think these are the only relevant ones for the singles charts if one is being strict: Eminem P!nk Coldplay Tiësto Beyoncé Guetta Chris Brown Calvin Harris OneRepublic Miley Cyrus Adele Lady Gaga Taylor Swift Drake
March 23, 20232 yr Author And then even OneRepublic felt like a one-off, can't really imagine them becoming a consistent hitmaker again. There are so few acts that manage chart longevity over 15 years these days. Funny really, because as far back as the late 90s the charts were always mix of new acts and new singles by veteran acts.
March 23, 20232 yr And then even OneRepublic felt like a one-off, can't really imagine them becoming a consistent hitmaker again. There are so few acts that manage chart longevity over 15 years these days. Even still though, their recent-ish singles seem to rack up pretty decent streaming numbers (at least on Spotify) for non-hits in any part of the world really: 'Rescue Me' (2019): 536,663,268 'Lose Somebody' (2020): 473,503,670 'Run' (2021): 410,511,074 'Sunshine' (2022): 246,632,181
March 23, 20232 yr Author True! I've updated the first post with the suggestions, all of which I think are fair, although some artists are in their own wheelhouse of success. I've added Linkin Park as they just hit the top 20 with an old demo, and Steps because they've had loads of No.1/2 albums in the last decade, a couple of which hung around, and sell out arena tours every couple of years. 1958 - Cliff Richard 1962 - The Beatles 1968 - Fleetwood Mac 1971 - Elton John, Rod Stewart 1974 - ABBA, Queen 1978 - Kate Bush 1980 - Bruce Springsteen 1982 - Wham! 1983 - The Smiths 1984 - George Michael (solo), Madonna 1987 - Metallica 1988 - Kylie Minogue 1990 - Mariah Carey, Red Hot Chili Peppers 1991 - Take That 1993 - Radiohead 1994 - Oasis 1996 - Robbie Williams 1997 - Steps 1998 - Shania Twain 1999 - Eminem, Britney Spears, Craig David, Blink-182, Muse 2000 - P!nk, Sia, Coldplay 2001 - Tiësto, Linkin Park, Gorillaz 2002 - Beyoncé (solo career), David Guetta, Avril Lavigne, Shakira 2003 - Amy Winehouse, Kings Of Leon, Kelly Clarkson 2004 - Maroon 5, The Killers, Bring Me The Horizon, My Chemical Romance 2005 - Arctic Monkeys, Rihanna 2006 - Chris Brown 2007 - Calvin Harris, OneRepublic, Paramore, The Wombats, Foals 2008 - Miley Cyrus, Adele 2009 - Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Drake, Ellie Goulding, Selena Gomez (early 2010) - Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj
March 23, 20232 yr Florence + the Machine Foo Fighters Kasabian I’d say there’s a few that haven’t released music in the past few years that would still see some success with a new album (The xx)
March 23, 20232 yr And then even OneRepublic felt like a one-off, can't really imagine them becoming a consistent hitmaker again. There are so few acts that manage chart longevity over 15 years these days. Funny really, because as far back as the late 90s the charts were always mix of new acts and new singles by veteran acts. I feel like very recently we've been seeing a LOT more "veteran" acts back in the singles chart, so I think eventually it might become more like the 90's again. The top 3 in the midweeks at the moment are Miley Cyrus, Calvin Harris/Ellie Goulding and The Weeknd, all of which were famous 10+ years ago. And it's not just this week, it's happened so much in like the past 9 months that I think some kind of long-lasting shift has happened and it's not just a random fluke. A few years ago I was actually slightly annoyed at how it seemed like almost all the hit songs were by new artists but I have no reason to be annoyed about that anymore lol.
March 26, 20232 yr Author Florence + the Machine Foo Fighters Kasabian Manic Street Preachers Have addd these, although unsure about the Manics tbh. Also added Paolo Nutini as he had a No.1 album and top 75 single with a few weeks in the chart last year. Also, Jonas Brothers. Leave Before You Love Me and Sucker weren't so long ago really, and they're on the Radio 1 a-list atm, albeit with a song that hasn't charted.
March 26, 20232 yr Here are some artists that have had Top 100 singles as lead artists in the last few years - Thirty Seconds to Mars (2018) - and looks like Radio 1 will still be supporting them Panic! at the Disco (2019) The Script (2019) - they've had a couple of singles miss since, but this was their last proper "lead single" for an album. Vampire Weekend (2019) Biffy Clyro (2020) James Blunt (2020) Westlife (2021) Lil Wayne (2022) Pharrell Williams (2022) Fall Out Boy (2023)
March 26, 20232 yr Author Panic! is certainly a good shout, and I forgot about Westlife's recent hits too. Will add these.
March 26, 20232 yr Author Westshite are not relevant  I mean, moreso than a lot of the names suggested. Hello My Love was in the top 40 for nine weeks only four years ago, and they've charted two other singles since that, and their last two albums both spent a month in the top 10, so weren't 'week one then out' type affairs.
March 27, 20232 yr If you're including Greatest Hits albums, then both Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson have been top 20 this year, and have been in the chart consistently for years. Plus, the 40th Anniversary edition of Thriller charted last year.
