George Ezra’s spirited folk-pop sing-alongs could have thrived in any era, but their mix of worldly curiosity, unbridled optimism and a few playful loops and synths reflects a truly millennial ideal. Born George Ezra Barnett in Hertfordshire, England in 1993, the singer/songwriter grew up seeking comfort in the wordplay of folk laureates like Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie and the raw, emotional resonance of blues masters like Lead Belly. He trained his voice to sound as bold and booming as the latter, and honed his writing chops while travelling—an activity he’d been fascinated with since falling in love with Paddington Bear as a kid. The fictional teddy would come to inspire Ezra’s 2014 debut album, Wanted on Voyage, a phrase found on Paddington’s suitcase. Singles “Budapest” and “Barcelona” burst with buoyant acoustic hooks while evoking the modest sensibility of Ed Sheeran. All I’m worried about it whether GGG has declined and moved closer to ACR really; whether it’s #10 or 11 behind Strandz at this point doesn’t really matter all that much.

 

Must be low sales at 10 - fully expecting sub 20k.

the weather is getting nicer now which means GGG is probably not going to ACR until September.

When the boy who would become Metro Boomin (Leland Tyler Wayne, born 1993) decided he was going to get serious about the rap thing, he intercepted his mother after work with a thick green folder—part dossier, part wish list, part five-year plan. Mom was impressed. He’d already been making beats for a few years, pestering A&Rs on Twitter, crowbarring some connections. He’d even gotten paid a few times. By the time he graduated from high school, he and Mom were making eight-hour-long car trips from St. Louis to Atlanta so Metro could work with Gucci Mane and OJ da Juiceman—contingent, of course, on him keeping his spot on the honor roll. A few months into his freshman year at Morehouse, it became clear that the balance was too tough to keep up. Mom chewed him out. But the work—glossy, atmospheric monsters that pushed trap to cinematic extremes—had too much traction to ignore. The green folder bore out. Future (“Mask Off,” “Low Life”), Migos (“Bad and Boujee”), Post Malone (“Congratulations”), 21 Savage (“Bank Account”), Kodak Black (“Tunnel Vision”): Just a sampling of what followed is some of the most definitive rap of the 2010s, tracks that—alongside the work of collaborators and fellow Atlantans Sonny Digital, Southside, TM88, and Zaytoven—reshaped hip-hop’s sound, feel, and culture. That Metro tackled longer-form projects—full-length collaborations, executive productions—not only made him unusually well-known for a producer, but suggested a broader vision, a transcending of the day-to-day business of beatmaking in favor of building a movement. The Weeknd

Nobody makes feeling bad sound as good as The Weeknd. 21 Savage

Whispering betrays an intimacy—a shared acknowledgement of something sacred. And 21 Savage, rap’s ASMR wordsmith, uses the technique to intimidate and taunt, to threaten and destroy. Violence was quite literally Shéyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph’s introduction to rap: He started after his best friend was killed (and he himself sustained gunshot wounds) in a shootout on Joseph’s 21st birthday. This is music born in the streets, desensitized to tragedy because any other coping mechanism would result in unending heartbreak. His breakthrough, 2016’s Savage Mode, produced entirely by Metro Boomin, showcases the rapper’s deadpan delivery and ambivalence toward the stories he tells. In a 2019 interview with Apple Music, Harry Styles shared a memory from the early days of One Direction. They were in the studio in Sweden working on “What Makes You Beautiful”. First single, the rollercoaster train just starting to climb the track. Someone comes into the room and says there are a couple of girls outside. Why? the band asks. They’re looking for you guys. For One Direction. “And we’re all just like, ‘But we’re in Sweden!’”

 

Ah, the old, “who…us?” routine. Harry! Incorrigibly charming, dreamboat for starry-eyed youth the world over. And, as it turns out, a legitimate force in pop, the kind of artist who could bridge contemporary appeal with classic values in ways that felt fresh but familiar, universal.

 

Part of what had made One Direction so great was that they never shied away from the pleasures of boy-band pop, but never patronised their audiences or fell back on gimmicks, either: Never mind the no-dancing policy; they were writing songs, exploring music as something beyond the show. In his solo career, Styles (born 1994, in Redditch, England) has done much the same, combining soul (“Watermelon Sugar”), confessional soft rock (“Sign of the Times”) and psychedelia (“Sunflower, Vol. 6”) with a modern touch, summarising where pop has been while also pushing it forward. “I’m just trying to go through life being a little less worried about stuff,” he said. “Definitely with working.
