Biography

Ayra Starr is impossible to ignore. Born in Benin Republic, the 20-year-old was raised between its beach city, Cotonou and the cultural hub of Lagos, Nigeria. This mix of cultures inspires her global approach to music, art and life. She's inspired by the regal earthiness of Angelique Kidjo, Rihanna's feisty confidence, as well as 90s fashion icons. Ayra describes her sound as Afrosoul, told in an intoxicating voice that evokes a Gen Z queen-in-waiting. Drawing from influences like classic Yoruba and Beninese music & artists like 2Face and Wande Coal, her music speaks for a generation of girls around the world who are finding themselves, united by angst and emojis. She announced herself to the world on January 22 with an eponymous 5-track EP, which produced the No. 1 single, “Away” and spurred viral moments in the UK as well. But Ayra Starr’s moment will come month’s after after releasing her debut studio album- 19 & Dangerous which had multiple number 1s, unprecedented cosigns, and organic virality. ‘Rush’ is one of 2022’s biggest summer hit. Collaborating with multiple artists across the continent and featuring on two bestsellers with her label mates, Ayra continues on her upward trajectory. Already, Ayra Starr is the second most nominated artist at the Headies- Africa’s premier music awards, and has a BET nomination under her belt. With a strong opening statement and millions of fans waiting for her next move, Ayra Starr is giving black girls a new voice. - Spotify

Biography

According to legend, Glass Animals chose their name by picking two words out of the dictionary at random—but you couldn’t come up with a better combination for a group that toes the line between the pristine and primal. On their 2014 debut, Zaba, the Oxford quartet aligned themselves with a storied lineage of abstract alt-rock—the moody atmospheres of Radiohead, the tropical textures of Animal Collective—but in Dave Bayley, Glass Animals possess an uncommonly smooth singer who could mould those left-field influences into sultry, R&B-flavoured pop songs. While the album made them indie darlings, it also earned the group admirers beyond the typical NME reader—the 2015 single “Lose Control” saw them team up with Brooklyn MC Joey Bada$$ for a trippy rap track. That sense of anything-goes openness fully flourished on 2016’s How to Be a Human Being, whose procession of freaky, funky anthems and synth-smeared slow jams earned Glass Animals their first Mercury Prize nomination. But after drummer Joe Seaward was nearly killed in a 2018 cycling accident, Glass Animals dialled down the eccentricity for 2020’s Dreamland, a more intimate record that further harmonized the art-rock/club-pop dialectic at the heart of their music. Speaking about the single “Your Love (Déjà Vu)” to Apple Music, Hayley said, “The idea was to take my favourite '90s producers like Timbaland and The Neptunes and the way they used samples, yet record a lot of those sounds in the way The Beatles or Beach Boys might’ve done it... and then taking Beatles and Beach Boys sounds and resampling them as [those producers] might’ve done.” That Dreamland cracked the Top 10 in both the UK and US is a testament to Glass Animals’ gift for melding different styles and eras into the sound of now. - Apple Music

Biography

Tion Wayne is the North London cult hero climbing the mountain to the top of UK rap royalty. Making his breakthrough in 2014 with debut mixtape Wayne’s World, the icon from Edmonton effortlessly dissected his experiences of trapping, the street life and run ins with the law. Later, Wayne’s World sequels in 2016 and 2019, via 2017’s Transition EP, would further Tion’s standing in the scene, keeping the streets fed and cultivating his now undeniable status as a staple in UK rap today. His musical dexterity has been proven over a myriad of sounds, from UK drill anthems such as one of 2020’s best, ‘I Dunno,’ and ‘Keisha & Becky’ with Russ to assist on hits such as NSG’s Afroswing-leaning ‘Options’. In a relatively brief time, Tion has racked up multiple UK Top 10 singles, over 500 million streams, frequent radio play on BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra and placement on the popular Spotify playlists Hot Hits UK, Rap UK and Who We Be. Critical acclaim followed in 2020 with his GRM Rated Award win for Track Of The Year for the colossal ‘I Dunno,’ proving just how far Tion’s music has travelled and inspired. - Spotify

Biography

If you want to see something sweet, have a look back at Niall Horan’s 2010 audition for the The X Factor. The swoop of bleached hair, the boyish jitters, the idea that he was gonna become the Irish Justin Bieber and it was all—going—to—start—today. Of course, things worked out a little differently, but if teaming up with a few other contestant runoffs and starting a group—One Direction—that went on to break Beatles-level records is your consolation prize, you probably came out okay. Not that Horan had a lot of time to think about it. “When it was happening, it was like we were in our own little bubble and everyone else was outside it,” he told Apple Music on the occasion of his second solo album, 2020’s Heartbreak Weather. “I didn’t realize the phenomenon. Like, apart from the fact that we played to 60,000 people every night.” Born in Westmeath, Ireland in 1993, Horan grew up listening to stuff like Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young—influences not immediately apparent in One Direction but that surfaced in his solo career. His first album, 2017’s Flicker, didn’t cling to youth. If anything, Horan—like Ed Sheeran—proved himself one of those artists capable of riding the divide between a teenage audience and a decidedly adult one, crafting earnest, uplifting folk-pop with a slight modern shimmer. Heartbreak Weather took the sound a step further, incorporating soul, dance, and classic pop-rock. Not that he’s aiming for cool. If anything, what makes Horan appealing is that he feels more like an Everyman than a rockstar—the boy from around the way who made good. Good thing he didn’t win after all. - Apple Music

Jazzy was boring, not a huge fan of her vocals but good for her getting a bit on her own I guess.

Tion is predictably more of the same and not very good at all in my opinion.

Biography

Rudimental

Music knows roots but not borders, and the same is true of Rudimental. Since forming in 2011, the London quartet of producers (Piers Aggett, Kesi Dryden, Amir Izadkhah, and Leon Rolle) has faithfully championed UK dance music’s hybrid spirit, fusing drum ’n’ bass, house, reggae, and more into a soulful amalgam. When they appeared with early singles like the barnstorming 2012 anthem “Feel the Love,” there was nothing else like them out there: UK underground dance tilted toward cozily retro house, while EDM was in ascendance around the world. Rudimental sidestepped both trends, favoring songwriting over club tracks and pulling from a broad range of inspirations—though songs like the shuffling “Spoons” proved them adept at the deepest strains of UK garage, and “Waiting All Night” could dwarf the biggest main-stage banger. Rather than hog the limelight, the producers turned the lens back on the multicultural stomping grounds of their native Hackney, whose famous Peace Carnival mural is depicted on the cover of their debut album, 2013’s Home. Similar themes of solidarity and community uplift powered subsequent albums; so did the group’s knack for finding exactly the right singer for their songs. In addition to their rotating cast of top-shelf contemporary vocalists like MNEK, Sinead Harnett, and Ed Sheeran, they brought in bona fide legends like soul icon Bobby Womack and South African choral group Ladysmith Black Mambazo. It’s a way of acknowledging that, much as dance music needs to keep moving forward, it’s nothing if it forgets its past. - Apple Music

Charlotte Plank

Charlotte Plank is a 22 year old singer-songwriter-producer inspired by an eclectic array of artists, genres and eras from 90s grunge and DnB to modern Pop. Her music will take you through from the commute to the rave, bridging the underground to the mainstream alongside bringing you a nostalgic yet new unique sound. Charlotte has been set up for an exciting 2023; featured in NMEs 100 emerging artists for the year and as one of the legendary Zane Lowe's artists to watch in 2023. - Spotify

Vibe Chemistry

Vibe Chemistry is a UK based Drum & Bass producer best known for his Radio 1 play-listed track ‘Balling’ and other vibe filled hits such as ‘Living Like This’ & most recently ‘Baddest’. Since 2012 Vibe Chemistry has been inspired by all spectrums of Drum & Bass and since July 2021 landed his first label deal with DnB Allstars with his ‘Balling EP’. Balling hit #1 in the UK Top 200 Shazam Chart, #1 on Beatport, was B-Listed at Radio 1 and sat top 40 in the UK singles chart for 7x weeks. After this success he also released an Edit inviting talented vocalists to put their spin on his track. On Spotify alone he now has 8 (and counting) tracks with over 1 million plays, showing that the future is looking highly positive for Vibe Chemistry and we can’t wait to hear what he releases next. - Spotify

Biography

Morgan Wallen’s band members have a name for his hairdo: the Tennessee Waterslide. You have to have a certain boot-and-blue-jeans swagger, good humor, and lack of self-importance to pull off a mullet in the 21st century, but Wallen has all that in spades, not to mention a taste for sounds that belie the look. Of course, with a voice steeped in Appalachian smoke, country is practically Wallen’s birthright. He was born in 1993 in tiny Sneedville, Tennessee, and grew up singing harmonies with his sisters in the church where their father preached. By 2014, he’d managed to get onto and eliminated from The Voice, but not before showing an innate versatility and relaxed style. His breakthrough came with 2017’s “Up Down,” a Southern-rock spring break anthem that radiated frosty-can cool with help from Florida Georgia Line. But his 2018 debut, If I Know Me, proved Wallen could ride solo on cleverly penned everyman hits like “Whiskey Glasses,” a honky-tonk heartbreak sing-along about getting over your blues with something a little stronger than beer goggles. As easy as his country goes down, Wallen stays committed to exploring interesting new directions. In 2019, he converted “Cover Me Up,” the signature song of anti-bro Jason Isbell, into a hymn of support for returning veterans. And in 2020, he not only held down “Heartless,” Diplo’s EDM foray into the Wild West, but dropped “7 Summers,” a soft-focus Eagles-style ballad about a boy who lost a girl because he wouldn’t leave his East Tennessee home. His third album, the sprawling, 36-track One Thing at a Time, arrived in 2023. - Apple Music

Biography

“I never really think, ‘OK, I’m going to write a song,’” Lewis Capaldi told Apple Music. “My creative process is basically: I sit down with a guitar and or at the piano, and I just start to write.” But the amazing thing about Capaldi is that he’s become one of the most popular young artists of his generation by preserving his songs in that raw, unvarnished state, to provide the purest representation of the pain and longing coursing through his lyrics. Amid the hyper-paced, totally wired world of late-2010s pop, this unassuming Scottish singer-songwriter and former Up Next artist—born 1996 in Glasgow—stopped the internet dead in its tracks with his DIY 2017 single “Bruises”, a stark, piano-based breakup ballad that introduced a voice imbued with the sort of soulful grit and deeply felt heartache you wouldn’t expect from a baby-faced 21-year-old. “Bruises” was Capaldi’s ticket to international major-label deals and tours opening for pop A-listers like Sam Smith and Niall Horan, but he would swiftly join their ranks with his equally rustic 2018 single “Someone You Loved”, another tear-jerking expression of sorrow—inspired by the death of his grandmother—that went to No. 1 in the US and UK, and has since become one of the most-streamed songs of all time. Those singles formed the foundation of Capaldi’s chart-topping full-length debut, 2019’s Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent, which fleshes out his sound with lush orchestration and gospel gravitas but, through songs like the suicide-themed “Before You Go”, retains his fearless flair for dredging up the messiest of emotions. - Apple Music
