Word is out was released a whopping 32 years ago, big surprise sound at the time and an even bigger surprise awaited as it was Kylies first song not to go Top 10. With age I've got to like it more and more so happy birthday word is out.

I bought all the formats but wasn’t a huge fan of it back then but I was horrified it missed the Top 10 and didn’t even go Top 15.

It felt like a flop and broke Kylie’s string of Top 10s…. fast forward to 2023 and we’d all gladly accept a #16 charting single

I have a great deal of affection for this song!

It gets a raw deal and it perhaps wasn't the greatest choice of a lead single, but it's a quality track. There's some great lyrical one-liners there!

It def gets a raw deal, I can see why it shouldn't have been the lead single but it was the type of track that could only be a lead single or not a single at all.

It's not a Kylie signature song but it reflects Kylie's ability to change things up.

Word Is Out is also her least sounding PWlL single from her PWL years.

It was very different pwl I have to say which seems to be why they played the follow up singles much more safely.
It's one of the many reasons I love Kylie so much, I guess similar to Body Language she's never been afraid of taking a risk even if it didn't pay off: but she'd just be ordinary otherwise!
Such a lesbian song! I love it!

They tried something different but nothing would arrest the commercial decline, certainly not Word is Out….but I’ve always enjoyed it and as has been said, it was positive they took a risk.

Let’s Get To It is easily my favourite PWL album. Much prefer the general production and think the title track is very underrated.

I agree she is never afraid of risks even though some of them havnt paid off but its probably one of the many reasons she has had such a successful career.

Looking at its chart history it’s surprising how this underperformed at the time - it’s not like it was up against a raft of new releases, the week it entered at #18 it was the highest new entry of the week and the TOTP appearance only managed to help it climb to #16 the following week, seems like it just didn’t click with her audience at the time.

Yes, i think it was purely down to that it didnt click with the audience, i so remember the release at the time myself and it was the first time i didnt like a kylie song straight away and pushed myself to believe i liked it more than i did.
This was quite a change of direction after rhythm of love. I actually prefer the summer breeze mix.

Rhythm of Love was always hard to follow.

Word Is Out represented Kylie was moving further away from the sound of what made her first 2 albums so successful but it wasn't what people wanted.
