Was worrying this was about to be a painful experience with how bad the site lag was for a couple of hours but looks like it's mostly cleared up now in time for this, hope it'll stay that way!

Hoping I can get both my first top 10 and my first non bottom 5 finish (which are of course the same thing in this particular contest). x

I feel like there's a good chance my 12 wins this time!

After missing the top 20 in my last 5 song contests (BJSC 156 & 157, the spin-off, Unknown Pleasures & Club Bizarre), at least that run will end tonight :yahoo: I've finished 11th, 2nd & 6th in these retro contests which I guess just leaves 4th out of the 'unlucky' positions, but I'd be very happy to be as high as that!

Betty Davis was an American funk rock singer and model (not to be confused with the actress Bette Davis whose eyes were the subject of the Kim Carnes song). 'If I'm in Luck I Might Get Picked Up' was the opening track on her eponymous 1973 debut album.

Here is my ballot:

12 Clout

10 The Baby's

8 The Moody Blues

7 The Sensational Alex Harvey Band

6 Johnny Cash

5 T.Rex

4 Seru Giran

3 Montrose

2 Rainbow

1 Serge Gainsbourg

Marquee Moon is the title track from New York band Television's debut album, released in 1977. As a single, it reached number 30 in the UK. The group split up just a year later. They reformed in 1991. Lead singer Tom Verlaine died earlier this year.

12; Rainbow – Stargazer

10; Yes - Close To The Edge

08; Xarhanga - Acid Nightmare

07; Joy Division - She's Lost Control

06; Serge Gainsbourg - Cargo Culte

05; Clout - Under Fire

04; T Rex - Cosmic Dancer

03; The Moody Blues - I'm Just A Singer (In A Rock And Roll Band)

02; Johnny Cash - I Will Rock And Roll With You

01; Montrose - Bad Motor Scooter

I was already introduced to the Television song from being an RIP slot during the weekly SyncTube sessions earlier in the year but it was good to hear it again, great song.

I'll just say I preferred WoW's retro pick in the current BJSC to this one

Clout take an early lead with Rainbow and The Moody Blues just behind. The only two songs not to score belonged to the first two voters so every song eligible for both votes is already off the mark.

Serge Gainsbourg is best known for his 1969 number 1 single 'Je T'Aime...Moi Non Plus' with Jane Birkin and she sings vocals on this track as well. It's from his 1971 concept album 'Histoire de Melody Nelson' which is about the relationship between a middle aged man and a 15 year old girl he meets after knocking her off her bicycle while driving his Rolls Royce. 'Cargo Culte' closes the album with the man lamenting Melody's death in a plane crash. The album's sound went on to influence many artists from the 1990s.

I discovered Marquee Moon when I made a playlist of the top rated top 40 hit on rateyourmusic.com for every year (it may have been on my 1001 songs playlist as well), and I couldn't not go with a ten minute song in a Rollo contest B-)

Rainbow was an amazing discovery, hyped to see who sent it!

Histoire de Melody Nelson is such a dark, disturbing and intriguing concept album. Sonically it sounds so ahead of its time for a 1971 release, with proto trip-hop sounds - apparently Portishead were influenced by it. I feel like that probably wasn't too hard to guess for me as both Jane Birkin and Serge by extension appeared in one of my posts in the 'most played of 2023' thread not too long ago, after returning to both discographies in more depth after Jane's recent passing. Thank you for the points so far ^_^
I did already know Serge Gainsbourg was Jade's entry because I knew she'd previously confirmed it for the BJSC spinoff before changing and sending it here instead :kink: cool to hear another song from him besides the obvious one though and it is another great track ~

Xarhanga were a Portuguese rock band who emerged while their country was under the rule of the conservative Estado Novo dictatorship which made it difficult for them to reach their intended audience. Acid Nightmare from 1973 is one of just two singles released by them.

10 Yes - Close To The Edge

8 Television - Marquee Moon

7 Serge Gainsbourg - Cargo Culte

good job everyone ~

My entry sponsored by /r/listentothis again, this time searching the phrase 'psychedelic rock' (inspired by 'The Four Horsemen' in BJSC) and just listening to songs with year tags from the 70s, hence it being something very obscure again. (shame this band have so few songs as I do really love this one, my fave song I've sent to one of these yet)

Ty Chez and Jerd for the pointage so far, yay for having a medal already x

'Close To The Edge' is the title track from Yes' fifth album, released in 1972, and taking up the whole of side 1. It features Jon Anderson on lead vocals, Steve Howe on lead guitar, Chris Squire on bass guitar, Rick Wakeman on keyboards and Bill Bruford on drums, making his last appearance before being replaced by Alan White for the next album. Rick Wakeman's legendary pipe organ section was recorded at St Giles-without-Cripplegate church in London. The group are still going and released their 23rd album this year. Steve Howe is the only member from the 'Close To The Edge' line-up who is still in the band. Jon Anderson continues to sing the songs of Yes, including 'Close To The Edge', backed either by The Paul Green Rock Academy or The Band Geeks.
