American Town more like American Cheese. Ed Sheeran is ovah etc.

Yikes at this being the biggest hit from the album, so far at least. Sounds pleasant on first listen.

The album is ok ish. But very boring. I think Ed just needs some time away so there’s time to build hype. We’re so oversaturated with him tbst there is no demand for new music from him

Looks like I may have been wrong predicting 'Liquor & Cigarettes' to not have the same longevity as C&S' other current hits!

I listened to the new Ed album last night, it has its moments but honestly think 'American Town' is one of the worst songs on it, it is just a little cringe oop. It is probably one of the more memorable melodies at least though so I can see why it's the song that was 'promoted'. Would have preferred it to be 'Plastic Bag' or 'Magical' though. But then he is apparently not doing any proper singles from this album so I guess it doesn't really make any difference.

Biography

“I think there’s a time in every artist’s life [when] they have to do something that isn’t for fans, isn’t for success, isn’t for touring,” Miley Cyrus told Apple Music in 2018. Cyrus could’ve been speaking about any number of moments from her profoundly varied career. Born Destiny Hope Cyrus—the daughter of country singer Billy Ray Cyrus—in Tennessee in 1992, the innovative artist has hardly stayed in one lane for more than a single album since she broke from the bubblegum pop that catapulted her to stardom as Disney’s Hannah Montana. Her 2009 summer anthem “Party In the U.S.A.” earned her a rapid ascent within the pop world, where 2013’s Bangerz—which showcased her musical maturity with “Wrecking Ball” and experimented with elements of Dirty South hip-hop—made her an icon. Vocal about her pansexuality and love for marijuana, Cyrus has worked hard to shed her wholesome teen image, and simultaneously defied odds by earning a reputation for an intense work ethic and an unshakable self-assuredness. She headed to left-field with the psych-tinged 2015 album Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz, a collaboration with members of The Flaming Lips, and with 2017’s Younger Now, a countrified pop offering that featured godmother Dolly Parton. And she's teamed up with rappers Mike Will Made It and will.i.am, Sarah Barthel of electronic rock group Phantogram, and, in 2018, Mark Ronson for the dramatic hit single “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart.” Those frequent partnerships have been major catalysts in the creation of Cyrus' diverse catalog and in the cementing of her status as a pop pace-setter by refusing to let it, or herself, be easily defined. - Apple Music

Billie Eilish

What Was I Made For?

Soundtrack single from Barbie

Released: 13th July 2023

Label: Darkroom / Interscope Records

On “What Was I Made For?”, her contribution to the Barbie soundtrack, Billie Eilish contemplates life in plastic. “Taking a drive/I was an ideal/Looked so alive/Turns out I'm not real/Just something you paid for/What was I made for?” she reflects, channeling the titular doll as she moves between worlds. If you’ve seen the trailer for the Greta Gerwig-directed film, you’ll know that it’s more than just a breezy ride in a hot-pink Corvette—it's an irreverent take on a complicated pop-cultural icon, and Eilish matches that depth with a poignant ballad. “I don't know how to feel, but I wanna try,” she sings. “I don't know how to feel, but someday I might.” - Apple Music

Biography

When singer-songwriter Billie Eilish feels something new, the first thing she does is take out her phone and write it down. “You can write anything,” she told Apple Music in an interview for the Up Next series. “You can say the truth, and you can not tell anyone that it’s the truth—you can just write it, and it’ll be yours.” Raised and homeschooled in Los Angeles by actor/musician parents, Eilish (born Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O'Connell in 2001) started writing songs when she was around 11, exploring a strain of melancholy, minimal and slightly surrealistic pop influenced as much by Lana Del Rey as the radical honesty of rappers like Tyler, the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt. Writing and recording with her brother—and producer—Finneas O’Connell at their parents’ house, Eilish released dont smile at me in 2017, followed by an ever-evolving series of singles—a prime example of the fact that, in the streaming era, artists are now free to move directly from their bedrooms into the spotlight. Despite the attention, Eilish is doing her best to stake out a space of freedom and fluidity, expanding her range of collaborators (Vince Staples, Khalid) and dodging easy definition. “If people think I have a sound, if people are like, ‘Oh yeah, her sound is this,’ if someone asks you what my sound is and you have an answer for them—you’re wrong,” she told Beats 1’s Zane Lowe. “Instead of trying to find a sound, when I want to make something and when I have an idea of what I want to make, I’m just going to make that.” - Apple Music

Yay for What Was I Made For? climbing, even if it’s partly default / other songs going to ACR. Glad it’s not disappearing without trace anyway.

Biography

A year or so after Thank Me Later hit, Drake was browsing art in L.A. when a neon sign caught his eye: “LESS DRAKE, MORE TUPAC.” At first he felt like ripping it off the wall. Instead, he bought it. After all, he figured if someone puts your name next to Tupac, you must be doing something right, even if they’re trying to take you down.

Born Aubrey Drake Graham in Toronto in 1986, he—like Tupac—became the voice of a generation and prism for his pop-cultural moment. Was he an R&B singer who rapped or a rapper who sang? Was he really that sad, or just exploiting a cultural preference for male vulnerability? From the jump, he let his contradictions define him: Tender, but cruel; sober one minute and drunk-dialing the next; a guy who could convince you he was an underdog from his perch on top of the world.

Lurid as his inner world is, the proof lies in his reach outward. A Drake project can incorporate house and club music (2022’s Honestly, Nevermind; 2017’s More Life) and red-eyed trap (2022’s 21 Savage collab Her Loss) with equal conviction and at no loss to the subjectivity at the center. “I obviously spend a lot of time in my own world,” he told Apple Music. “But when I do take a look at the broader scope of things… I've always tried to make music that transcends gender, nationality—to try and unify people. Because that’s really what it’s about.” - Apple Music

Biography

Pop star Troye Sivan voices the concerns of the internet generation. The Australian actor, singer/songwriter and YouTuber, born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1995, already displayed a natural command of the stage at just 11 years old, when he delivered his first of a series of much-lauded performances at the 2006, 2007 and 2008 Channel Seven Perth Telethons. His ability to capture an audience won him views on social media, a platform he used to both propel his singing career and as a confessional; he came out publicly as gay via a YouTube video when he was 18 years old. His 2015 debut LP, Blue Neighbourhood, effortlessly landed him in the spotlight, with songs like “YOUTH” and “WILD” serving as the perfect introduction to his brand of sleek, honey-coated synth-pop. His follow-up, Bloom (2018), proved that he could also play well with others, namely pop titan Ariana Grande for their mesmerising duet, “Dance to This''. This knack for collaboration would have him working with a constellation of the era’s most talented stars like Charli XCX on 2018’s iconic throwback anthem “1999” and Lauv on 2019’s “i’m so tired…”, a groovy and relatable anti-pop song where both artists boldly claim to be “tired of love songs”. An icon of queer representation, Sivan has been open about his sexuality and has graciously used his platform to support other LGBTQ artists and causes. - Apple Music

'Rush' keeps getting tantalisingly close to going top 20!

'Rush' is a bit like 'Dog Days Are Over' - so close to top 20 but never quite getting there! Albeit over a much shorter timeframe obvs...

Biography

Away from all the noise of his various successes – 3 UK top 5 albums incl. the platinum-selling, chart-topping Long Way Down; 2 top 10 singles; a 2013 Brit award for Critic's Choice – there's one thing that's always kept Tom Odell grounded: songwriting. A classic songwriter - awarded a prestigious Ivor Novello for Songwriter of the Year in 2014 – relied on his passion more than ever when it came to crafting his new pop-leaning, emotionally-healing fourth album. The whirlwind around his debut had kickstarted a work ethic that became an obsession that culminated in crippling anxiety, leading to a dark period of mental health that stalked most of Odell’s 2018 and 19. Odell wrote his way through it, eventually letting down his guard and pouring out his feelings. These broader lyrical horizons needed to be matched by a musical expansion, with a lot of the songs on the new album leaning into a more DIY, electronic, bedroom pop sound. The love of this new direction chimed with the pandemic's arrival and songs were crafted in a more threadbare way around instruments he had at hand, like Moog synths. It was a move underpinned by both necessity and a desire to explore. Four albums into his career and Odell has made a record that feels free of expectation and of other people's perceptions of who he is as an artist. While darkness was the inspiration, this multi-layered, genre-bending pop album is full of light and hope, even in the strangest of times. - Spotify
