For several years I hadn't self recycled but that slipped a lot in recent memory lol. VNV Nation was a prime example of missing the final first time round only to come 2nd on second try!

 

I've self recycled with Night Club too (the first instance I think as I sent them simultaneously in the same month to bjsc and spinoff respectively) and this month with Blutengel but they too had a song entered several years ago first to the Halloween spinoff!

 

I do like to find new discovery artists in general though and not repeat as it's more rewarding that way!

I have to varying degrees of success:

Andreea Banica (BJSC 45, 18th -> BJSC 48, DNQ) [i was tired of DNQing so thought to recycle the one entrant who got me a hit, it was of course yet another DNQ lol and I've made the effort to wait at least a year and a half between self-recycling since]

Done it before, I went off the idea for a long time but came back round to it. If I like an artist enough to send them to the contest once, I probably like a second song of theirs to send to the contest a second time, it's very hard to truly know an artist's quality off of one song after all.

 

I try to follow guidelines of trying to pick the second entry as one that's quite different in sound and style and focusing on artists that didn't do super well the last time I sent them (it's a very good feeling getting a previous NQ artist through to the final), so it does feel like the entry is offering something new, but I don't let the label of self-recycle stop me. Did it with Ruby Frost, Amaranthe, BABYMETAL, sewerslvt, Mori, Ado at least off the top of my head, more in spinoffs I know, and I've strongly considered doing it with several more of the metal bands and J-pop artists I've sent. If I like an artist and they've had a long career, nothing to stop it happening from my point of view*.

I love self-recycling! I've honestly never given a second thought to it, I feel like it's given me a group of core artists that represent me as a country. Plus, I don't seek out new music as much as others, when I do I usually start with the artists I've previously sent to BJSC, that alone has led to a lot of the entries on this list:

Coincidentally I was recently thinking about whether there had been this topic in here before and suddenly boof, there it is :magic:

 

I have only self-recycled twice and one of those was just the remixers (Filatov & Karas). The only proper self-recycle was TEPR (in the space of 6 contests as well!) but I think it would be agreed that the 2 entries were vastly different sonically, almost as if they were by 2 completely different artists.

I’ve only ever self-recycled once. Sent Kerli as my debut entry as Terra di Campioni back in 2014(?), and then sent her to the 3rd Halloween spin-off.
