I was also taking into account surprise releases. If Sidemen drop a song, Pogues might need far beyond 20,000. Most of the punters betting probably haven't even heard of Sidemen, but they were so close last year, they might give it another go. Then there are the rock fans who want AC/DC to take it, and don't forget the Krackpots, they're releasing a single and it might have 15 versions.

I’m not sure whether it will just be FONY vs Last Christmas.

They're releasing a week too early for the Christmas #1, for reasons which will apparently be explained soon...

Not enough people know how the charts work. I've been reading the media articles about it and very few even mention when the Christmas number #1 is announced, let alone the tracking period that's eligible. It's close, but a few too many weeks out, I think those in this thread making the point that downloads will be split are right.

What this might do is give the campaign to get a Christmas #1 in general a bit of attention again after a lax few years and if people like (ugh) Piers Morgan actually stick by their guns and promote it as a campaign rather than just saying it today, it might stand a chance. Also the bar for people to jump in may be actually raised, due to 'respect' and all.

it would be lovely for FONY to be #1 but it's tough to see it sustaining.

Yes, but they did say they want Christmas Number One! I’m not ruling them out just yet.

Just occurred to me that a few Tina Turner songs were reset after she died earlier this year, could it be done for a Christmas song...?

I’d love for them to do it for FONY but they said that they won’t and at the same time, I’m glad that they don’t as it would result in other old Xmas songs getting reset

Weren't those resets just an early application of the 'automatic resets for songs which haven't charted for 3 years' rule?

It was in May/June which I thought was before the rule came in, but you're probably right.

The Krackpots - Proper Christmas music video is out! It's catchy and a lot of fun.

Only in circumstances like Shane’s though?

Yeah and as long as they don’t start resetting other Xmas songs

Jack Harlow now 50/1 at William Hill. I don’t really think he’ll do it but I can’t resist sticking £20 on just in case. I don’t know why the bookies think the current #1 is so unlikely to be Xmas #1
No way is Jack gonna hold on for Xmas #1. Wham! aren’t far off doing double what he’s doing on Spotify today and it’s only the 1st, come the week running up to Christmas the figures will be huge

Maybe so but 50/1 is still way too high

Because it seldom ever is. Clean Bandit in 2016 is the only example in many years where a long running #1 held onto Xmas #1.

Perfect the year after too

Which is the reason that Lovin on Me will be Xmas #1 if it winds up getting it. Not even the power of the mannequin challenge could stop Rockabye from getting Xmas #1

Well every year since then (except 2017) LadBaby have hogged the Xmas #1, so we really don’t know what could happen. Clean Bandit was the first year that really showed the power streaming has over Xmas #1, and if it weren’t for LadBaby I’m sure we would’ve had a lot more non-Christmas #1s.
