November 27, 20231 yr I saw The Last Dinner Party at a free gig last year, there were only about 20 others there - possibly the last time that will happen for them!
December 4, 20231 yr I've just seen the list for this... The extent to which they've loosened the criteria 😮🤯🤣 Kenya Grace? Peggy Gou? Tyla? They've had 3 of the most prominent songs of 2023!
December 4, 20231 yr Ayra Starr Caity Baser CMAT Elmiene Kenya Grace The Last Dinner Party Olivia Dean Peggy Gou Sekou Tyla Eh
December 4, 20231 yr I wouldn't say Kenya Grace and Tyla are really well established as artists (in the UK anyway, Tyla may be in South Africa x) despite having one big hit each so they're not quite as eye-roll worthy inclusions for me as the likes of Central Cee and PinkPantheress in previous years. Peggy Gou is a little more egregious as she has been kind of established in a semi-underground way for a few years now but still happy to see her on there anyway x Feels like a couple of these would have made more sense to be on last year's list (Ayra and Olivia) and Caity Baser should be in a bin but otherwise seems like a pretty fair list. Although I know nothing about Elmiene or Sekou (the latter I had never even heard the name until seeing him on the Rising Star shortlist).
December 4, 20231 yr Olivia Dean was a 2023 breakout surely and I’ve been listening to the last two CMAT albums. Nice to see her on there though! Edited December 4, 20231 yr by Christmasteve201
December 4, 20231 yr Will Olivia Dean even be releasing anything new next year? With a top 5 album and Mercury Prize nomination, she’s a clear Sound of 2023!
December 4, 20231 yr Olivia Dead was a 2023 breakout surely and I’ve been listening to the last two CMAT albums. Nice to see her on there though! Olivia Dead :o
December 4, 20231 yr Author Peggy Gou is an odd choice, but I guess she's getting more mainstream success now so kind of makes sense. Kenya Grace is a fab choice but I have a feeling with winner will be The Last Dinner Party or CMAT.
December 5, 20231 yr Quite liking this list! CMAT randomly made it onto my playlist. I’m someone who for several years gave up listening to the charts because I was no longer enjoying ‘current music’ - but I’m enjoying a lot of new artists.
December 5, 20231 yr https://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2020/11/12/octav...se-allegations/ Apparently Octavian’s charges have been dropped due to “insufficient evidence”.
December 5, 20231 yr No mention of yunè pinku 😔 she played one of the best live gigs I went to this year, released a fantastic EP and had a recent solid Boiler Room in Stockholm. Surely 2024 is her year? Mind you Peggy Gou first made my personal chart Top 10 in March 2018 so maybe we have to wait another 5 years..
December 5, 20231 yr Pretty cool to see CMAT, Olivia Dean and Peggy Gou on this list. I remember listening to It Makes You Forget in 2018, so it is odd to see Peggy only now appear on the nominee list, but still nice to see her. Last Dinner Party and Tyla have some good stuff too (I have, however, only listened to three of their songs so far), and I find Caity to be solid. Others I've either listened to like one or two songs (Ayra, Kenya, Elmiene) or no songs at all Octavian's "mainstream" career pretty much ended in 2020 when an ex-partner accused him of physical and emotional abuse. He offered her £20k to stay quiet, she didn't, and then his label dropped him not long before the release of his debut album 'Alpha'. It eventually released in 2022 but nobody cared by that point. Pa Salieu is currently in prison, convicted of 'possessing a bottle as an offensive weapon & violent disorder' in a mass brawl so hasn't released much music in the last couple of years - https://www.nme.com/news/music/pa-salieu-se...s-brawl-3359757 I was going to say 'They should have given the Sound Of 2019 award to Slowthai or ROSALIA', but the former is facing similar charges of his own, so maybe the latter would have been a better alternate choice. The whole 'album scrapped due to sexual assault charges/allegations only for it to get released a few years later' also happened with Ryan Adams, and like Alpha, Big Colors didn't seem to get a lot of coverage. I remember coming across the Grammys Best New Artist Curse discussion a few years ago, and also saw two great videos from Crash Thompson discussing that curse with winners of that award from the 90s, and it made me think whether there is a Best New Artist curse in the Sound Of award.
