'Houdini' is a great bop but can see why the reception is slightly muted - better than 'Dance the Night' though!

Biography

The country world feigned surprise when, after three albums of Music Row-indebted songcraft, Taylor Swift formally embraced pop on 2012’s Red. But no one should have been shocked: Any 14-year-old capable of persuading her parents to move from suburban Pennsylvania to Nashville for her career clearly has ambition to burn. And the thrill of following Swift’s rise has been watching her execute it flawlessly, largely because her melodic intelligence is equal to that ambition. Her early, youthful love songs heralded 2010's newly self-possessed Speak Now—which showed off her scathing wit—and evolved into knowing, ironclad pop fare that held its own against boisterous Max Martin production on 1989, her fifth album, titled after her birth year. Throughout, her songwriting has blurred the lines between the public and private, burying enough real-life clues (about, say, scarves and Starbucks) to make clear that only Swift can own her narrative, thank you very much, while still retaining a lyrical elegance. Though 2017’s reputation might have been perceived as a gorgeously constructed piece of dramatic theater—its attendant heroes and villains all real-life characters from Swift's public feuds—all that spectacle proved an attention-grabbing cover for her most romantic album yet. She turned up the romance even more on 2019’s Lover, but it was 2020’s folklore and its companion, evermore—ruminative, relatively lo-fi albums written and recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic—that earned her the Apple Music Award for Songwriter of the Year. - Apple Music

Cruel Summer, the eternal smash :cheeseblock: Made my Spotify Wrapped for the fourth time this year, and it was my most played song of the year! Just doesn't get old at all, what a masterpiece <3

Absolutely love Baddadan - such an unrestrained banger.

Houdini is only a 6/10 or so bop for me soz.

Cruel Summer is really good but I’ve got really sick of it - could do with not hearing it until next summer.

Cruel Summer is really good but I’ve got really sick of it - could do with not hearing it until next summer.

I hope it doesn't get a resurgent next year - although fear it will. Really don't get Taylor full stop.

It'll come up in the final #2 session :magic:

back to back Taylor <3 and 2 incredible songs <3

Let’s hope it doesn’t. OCC seem to be forgetting that the song is 4 years old. She could’ve picked a song from Midnights to be the next single instead of CS from 3 albums before that

Harry Styles most useful thing he's ever done is inspire Taylor x all these songs :o

Biography

Tyla creates music that is at once indelibly South African and ambitiously global. It’s a unique balance, one molded by the sounds she heard as a child growing up in Johannesburg. Not only did Tyla (born in 2002) listen to plenty of homegrown music, including Kwaito and Afropop, but she was also exposed to ’90s American R&B greats like Aaliyah and Brandy. As with so many artists coming of age in the 21st century, the motivated teenager utilized social media to showcase her swiftly evolving talent; she then teamed up with South African producer Kooldrink for “Getting Late.” The 2019 single is a mesmerizing realization of Tyla’s love for bridging styles. The killer rhythm track is rooted in amapiano, and the singer’s translucent vocals reveal stunning versatility: hypnotic enough for dance music yet packed with pop’s effortless catchiness and R&B’s undiluted soulfulness. - Apple Music

Enjoying Is It Over Now much more than Cruel Summer as it’s not stale for me yet - nice song. Shame Say Don’t Go wasn’t the smash instead though.

I find Water really dull actually and now it’s kind of getting annoying for me too.

Biography

The morning after a rough performance at a 2016 New Year’s Eve show, Mariah Carey took to social media to offer her recap: “S**t happens.” What else could she say? What else did she need to say? Thirty-plus years in the business, more No. 1 singles than any solo artist in history (and second overall only to The Beatles), more writing and production credits on those singles than any other female composer—Carey is one of the few artists who might legitimately be beyond apology, a diva incarnate whose songs bridge the confessional intimacy of singer-songwriters with the mass appeal of pop. Yeah, she had some knocks along the way. Everyone does. But few take them in stride, let alone with such style.

Born in Long Island in 1969 or 1970 (she once quipped that she doesn’t acknowledge time), Carey grew up on the classics: Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight. She moved to New York City after high school, cobbling together jobs while working on demos with then-collaborator Ben Margulies at the back of Margulies’ father’s cabinet factory. Her biggest tracks—from the early, dance- and gospel-influenced “Someday” and “Dreamlover” to the club leanings of “Fantasy” and “Honey” and ballads such as “Forever” and “Always Be My Baby”—stand like mile markers in the culture, capturing a feeling of sweetness and euphoria that straddles pop, hip-hop, and R&B without slotting neatly into any of them. Meanwhile, her melismatic style—a technique that entails singing a single syllable with a long run of notes—redefined our sense of what pop vocals sound like. Mimi, The Elusive Chanteuse, The Imperfect Angel...or maybe just Mariah. - Apple Music
