20 Ruel - MUST BE NICE | 14-2-2-4-6-11-10-19-19-23-22-29-34-38-x

There's a certain confidence in Ruel's 4TH WALL era that was absent from much of his earlier stuff. After a long wait, the album finally arrived in 2023, but among the confident, catchy bops that mostly preceded the album was this little beauty. MUST BE NICE is Ruel at his most vulnerable, the production calm and Ruel's vocals perfectly encapsulating light and shade as the lyrics reflect on where an ex-lover is at now, and how it "must be nice" for them to have moved on so easily. The track debuted at #2 in my chart, very unluckily releasing against The Kid LAROI's LOVE AGAIN (which is still to come), making one of the biggest top 2 debuts of the year. It's Ruel's top track of the year and is definitely solidifying itself as one of my favourite Ruel tracks.

19 Theoz - Mer av dig | 1-4-9-13-9-11-16-21-22-30-32-39-x

It's become tradition for Melodifestivalen to make a bigger splash on my taste than actual Eurovision does. Sweden's selection programme just hits the spot, with a handful of great tracks guaranteed every year. For the first time, two Melfest tracks topped my chart in 2023. The second is still to come, but before Marcus & Martinus got there, Theoz led the way. After placing seventh in the final with huge bom Som du vill in last year's contest (and achieving a #3 peak in my chart with it), Theoz returned to improve on that in 2023. Going via the 'andra chansen' (second chance) round, Mer av dig also reached the final and came fifth! It's easy to hear why it's a hit, even if you don't speak the language. It's immensely catchy, and not one, but two key changes! So much fun. It hit #1 in my chart immediately - Theoz's second chart-topper - and finishes up as his best EOY position to date.

18 Kylie Minogue - Padam Padam | 2-3-5-6-8-10-14-21-23-26-29-31-35-x

A padamic swept across the nation in 2023, and it was impossible not to get caught up in it. I was already hyped for the return of Kylie; the DISCO era had wrapped over a year before so I was craving something new, and Oliver Heldens collaboration 10 Out of 10 wasn't the amazing track I wanted. Enter Padam Padam, a song that was love at first listen and immediately catchy. It took the nation by storm, with memes going viral and the track's quality making itself a hit against the odds, marking one of the most exciting and satisfying chart moments of 2023 when it hit the UK top 10. In my chart, Padam was a guaranteed smash, entering at #2 behind Conan Gray's Never Ending Song in a closely run battle. Here, it becomes Kylie's highest EOY position to date, beating the #20 position of Timebomb from 12 years back! Truly one of Kylie's best tracks and I'm so happy it's going to go down as an essential track in her fantastic discography.

17 Conan Gray - Never Ending Song | 1-2-4-5-7-8-11-19-20-24-27-30-32-30-35-38-39-x

The song that just pipped Kylie to the post ends up just one spot above it here! Conan Gray has been one of the most consistent hitmakers in my chart since I discovered him back in 2019. He has a unique knack for crafting pop songs with the most intense emotions (usually sad ones), and he kicked off his third album era with this extremely addictive Max Martin banger that sounds like it's straight from the 80s. Never Ending Song is about a relationship that "just never seems to die", according to Conan, going through feelings of loss and love in its very much finite runtime of 2 minutes and 35 seconds. Conan utilises his lower register a lot more for this track, unusually for his music, so it really stands out in a positive way, and the music video just OOZES star quality, one of the best videos of the year! It finishes just two spots below his best ever EOY position, achieved by the similarly boppy Telepath in 2021.

16 Fred Roberts - Runaway | 26-9-8-4-4-10-16-16-14-17-19-19-18-17-11-17-10-18-20-21-40-35-x

I remember seeing Fred Roberts post on Instagram announcing the release of his debut single. I didn't expect much of it really. I'd followed him since The X Factor: The Band, but after the group he was in failed to win the show and broke up within six months, I figured any attempt at solo material wouldn't be worth my time. I've never been so happy to be wrong! What I didn't know was that Fred was signed to a major label and had co-written this song with people behind hits for Lady Gaga, Ellie Goulding and more. Runaway is a slick pop song with an anthemic chorus and lyrics about moving on and being the bigger person, and it hit my top 10 in its second week, peaking at #4 in week 4 and spending an impressive 22 weeks in my top 40 (cut short abruptly by the S Club tour boost too). It's the lowest peaking song in my top 20 and second lowest peaking in my top 40, so impressive for it to be this high. Fred also has one more song still to come!

15 Harry Styles - Satellite | 7-30-x-8-20-26-31-36-4-1-1-4-11-17-23-30-34-x

Harry Styles didn't release any brand new music in 2023, but the promotion of Harry's House continued as Love on Tour 2023 circled back round to the UK. Coinciding with the tour was the promotion of the album's fourth single Satellite, complete with a music video filmed partly at the tour itself. Satellite was always a great album track, entering at #7 in 2022 and finishing at #176 in my 2022 EOY. With its single push, though, it took on a life of its own. The video saw it re-enter in the top 10, before my three nights at Love on Tour saw it hit the top spot for two weeks, becoming Harry's seventh solo #1 single, and third from the Harry's House era. Of course, the music video deserves a lot of credit for the song's impact, revolving around the adorable robot Stomper and the super cute story it tells, which was embedded into the song's visuals on tour too!

14 Benson Boone - What Was | 2-1-2-3-11-15-18-20-27-28-28-33-36-x

Three consecutive years in my EOY top 10 proves to be a difficult ask for any artist, with only Iggy Azalea (2013-15) and The Kid LAROI (2020-22, so far) ever managing it. Benson Boone falls short of a third consecutive year, but that's no reflection on him as he still managed to place three songs in my EOY top 40, and come within touching distance of the top tier with this. What Was, on paper, may not have looked like the top choice for Benson's highest entry of the year. Debuting at #2 behind Sarcastic Sounds' Stumbling (EOY #35), What Was broke Benson's streak of debuting at the top with each of his singles. It didn't totally let the team down though, climbing to the top to keep his (still unbroken) 100% run of chart-topping singles alive in its second week. It was boosted after I saw Benson live, and What Was proved to be a huge standout, particularly the final minute or so, it builds so well! I'm not sure Benson's vocals have ever sounded so good, and that's saying something. 2024 will hopefully be bringing a full studio album from Benson, with a new single out this Friday!

13 Boy In Space - A Hundred Million Lights | 2-3-9-7-5-6-6-10-…

Intriguingly, Boy In Space didn't promote either of his two 2023 singles at all. The presave link to Rosie Darling collaboration Nail in the Coffin remained in his Instagram bio for much of the year, with not a single post or link to summer release Ciao, nor this gorgeous winter single. A Hundred Million Lights is just one or two more specific lyrics away from being a Christmas song, but its vagueness makes it acceptable to hear even outside the festive season...! I love the way it builds, from a stunning piano track to that majestic conclusion, perfectly topped off by Boy In Space's immaculate vocals. In my chart, it debuted at #2, behind The Kid LAROI's WHAT JUST HAPPENED, which is still to come which makes it particularly unlucky! The track spent eight weeks in my chart's top 10, one of his best runs to date, and with a new single slated for release this Friday (in contrast, it's been plastered all over his social media!), 2024 is set to be another great year for my favourite Swedish popstar.

12 Caity Baser - Pretty Boys | 5-4-1-1-1-3-8-12-19-23-30-33-36-39-x

There's always room for some fun in the chart, and I think one of the most fun pop tracks of 2023 came from breakout star Caity Baser. I knew of her in 2022 from viral hit X&Y, which I liked but found a tiny bit cringe lyrically. I didn't hear Pretty Boys until it entered the UK top 40, and it was love at first listen. It's got just the right amount of personality, reminding me of certain songs by the likes of Kate Nash but brought into the TikTok generation. It's effortlessly catchy, the lyrics are funny and it just kept drawing me back in. The track entered my chart at #5 before spending three weeks at the top, and I bought a ticket to see Caity live almost entirely off the back of this song, it's just that good. She had a follow-up hit with Why Can't I Have Two? (2468) which peaked at #8 in my chart over the summer, and Caity's next mixtape is due out this year.

11 The Kid LAROI - Forever & Again | 1-3-6-5-7-10-14-21-27-29-30-30-x

The Kid LAROI is, perhaps unsurprisingly, the only artist with multiple songs still to come. With two songs making the top 10, there's sadly not quite enough space for this one to join in, but Forever & Again still did remarkably well. Despite never being pushed as a single from the Barbie soundtrack, Forever & Again was the song I was most hyped for, so naturally I gravitated towards it immediately just off the back of the artist. Laroi had teased Forever & Again long before its release, so it wasn't written specifically for the Barbie film, nor did it feature much in the movie (barely at all...!), but that doesn't stop it being a standout track in his discography. Unusually for Laroi, it's a positive, encouraging track about being there for someone you care about no matter what. His vocals are at their best and I really love the production too. It became Laroi's fourth #1 of eight in 2023, and the only chart-topper from the Barbie soundtrack, but it's not the highest song here to be taken from it...!

10 Sarcastic Sounds - Someday Soon | 2-2-2-2-5-7-15-19-24-27-23-x

In 2013, Lily Allen blocked herself from the top spot for four straight weeks. Hard Out Here took #1 from the off, having been released just days after Somewhere Only We Know, which was relegated to a #2 peak as a result. Hard Out Here spent a further week at the top in week 5 while Somewhere Only We Know dropped to #5. Weirdly, 2023 saw an intriguing parallel. With the return of S Club unbeatable by anyone, Sarcastic Sounds was forced to settle for a #2 peak with Someday Soon, stuck at #2 behind S Club's These Are the Days for four weeks. Week 5 saw it drop to #5 while S Club held #1, much like the two Lily songs! Someday Soon and Somewhere Only We Know now share the record for most weeks at #2 without ever making #1, and it's hard to argue with it when These Are the Days is still to come in my countdown. Unfortunate timing for sure!

Nevertheless, Someday Soon was a beacon of positivity across my summer. Lyrically, it's optimistic, a strong reminder to take note of what you have before it's gone. If I remember correctly, Jeremy (Sarcastic Sounds) performed the song live when I saw him supporting New Hope Club, so I heard it a couple of months before release, and it was instant love upon hearing the studio version. It's impossible not to smile during it, and between this track and These Are the Days, my summer playlist couldn't have been any chirpier. Jeremy hit the top spot four times across 2023, but it's this track that ends up as his highest, significantly above every other single from his debut album Haunt You Forever. Though its top 40 run was cut short by, you guessed it, S Club and the tidal wave impact of their tour, Someday Soon still manages to become one of two non-#1s to hit my top 10 EOY.

9 The Kid LAROI - WHAT JUST HAPPENED | 1-2-3-2-3-9-10-16-…

Let's flash back to July 2022. The Kid LAROI's STAY was turning one year old just as I saw him live twice in London, complete with meet and greet on the second gig, on the hottest days of the year. I think back to those gigs really fondly, and how sweet Laroi was when I met him! At those gigs, Laroi played a couple of new songs. One of them, UP!, never got released, but the other track, a really catchy pop-rock track called WHAT JUST HAPPENED which only had one verse + its chorus at the time. It got a great reaction from Laroi's fans, and he vowed it would come out. With Thousand Miles underperforming just months prior, it felt like WHAT JUST HAPPENED was the perfect song to get things back on track.

Of course, Laroi's album took longer than expected to arrive. Its original rollout in early 2023 promised the long-awaited release of WHAT JUST HAPPENED in the final seconds of the music video for I GUESS IT'S LOVE? (another long-awaited track, but one that was always confirmed to not be a part of the album), but it never came, and promotional single WHERE DOES YOUR SPIRIT GO? came next a couple of months later, followed by TOO MUCH rebooting the campaign in October. Finally, one week later, WHAT JUST HAPPENED finally dropped, a little past the peak of my hype for it, but that didn't stop it peaking at #1 and, in the long run, becoming the best performing song from the second part of THE FIRST TIME's rollout. It's undoubtedly one of Laroi's best songs, and I truly believe with a full push, it would've been a big hit, so it's a shame it's going to remain a missed opportunity.

8 glaive - as if | 1-2-5-8-12-15-12-17-17-23-31-30-19-23-25-21-24-23-17-25-29-31-34-34-x

With a couple of single releases across 2022, I was expecting a glaive album to have arrived quite early into 2023, so the campaign came a little later than I expected. Additionally, what I thought were its first two singles (minnesota is a place that exists, and three wheels and it still drives!, both of which hit #1 in my chart) didn't end up making the album. In fact, the album went in a pretty different direction entirely from these chaotic hyperpop influenced tracks. When as if first got released, I remember being slightly hesitant of it on first play. It's surprisingly rooted in indie pop, a more commercialised version of glaive, and deeper than much of his earlier stuff.

Quickly though, it worked its way up my affections. The intro and outro both use a sample of a Timothée Chalamet monologue from Prodigal Son, which ties the song together beautifully. Thematically, as if is about being true to yourself and who you are, and the consequences that come with it. Verse one speaks about when glaive's friends insulted his music and called him the F-slur (glaive identifies as bisexual), and how he knows that if he were to cut them off as a result, he'd have nobody else. The chorus doubles down: "as if I'm ever gonna change", sung with power and conviction. My favourite part of the song is the closing monologue. A passionate performance from Timothée over the instrumental at its peak scratches a musical itch in just the right place for me. The instrumental cuts out for the final line: "I'm going to find my place in this world, count on it." A perfect closing message for a brilliant track, which became glaive's fourth #1, and his first ever EOY top 10 hit for me.

7 Nicki Minaj & Ice Spice with Aqua - Barbie World | 2-6-6-6-6-7-4-4-6-9-13-20-25-26-29-28-x

I mentioned it earlier but I truly believe fun is an important component of the chart. The world of music, particularly through the eyes of critics, can feel really pretentious sometimes, which is why I love pop music so much. It's carefree, there's no expectation to break down the walls of music, we just get to live in the moment and enjoy a bop without having to overthink. There's nothing wrong with that at all! With the Barbie movie coming in mid-2023, its soundtrack was the perfect place to showcase a dose of fun (whilst also going against expectations with tracks like Billie Eilish's stunning What Was I Made For? to complement particular scenes in the movie). My favourite song from the soundtrack is the closing credits track, and it's a remake of a classic track that, interestingly, is an example of a fun track I'm not that bothered with!

I've known Aqua's Barbie Girl all my life, but it's always just felt like that novelty song that got played at school discos. I've never really cared for it on its own, so a sample of it by Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice had me in two minds. I didn't need to worry, though. Barbie World is irresistibly catchy, I absolutely love the switching between Nicki and Ice Spice in the chorus and the playful lyrics throughout, and both deliver great verses too. The sample of Barbie Girl works really well, and the track is pitched perfectly for a Barbie soundtrack song. In my chart, it peaked at #2 behind Harry Styles' Satellite, but spent an impressive 10 weeks in my top 10 and has finished as the highest track not to peak at #1 in my EOY, and quite notably, Nicki's highest ever EOY position!

6 Reiley - Lovesongs | 1-2-2-2-3-8-15-18-18-22-23-24-28-30-32-32-35-x

In 2021, whilst browsing Scandipop as I occasionally do for hidden gems, I found an unusually brilliant bop called Let It Ring. Sampling the iPhone ringtone, Let It Ring had no right being as good as it was, and it became an immediate top 10 hit in my chart. The artist behind the track was Faroese popstar and influencer Reiley, who didn't chart again in 2021 or 2022, but I did check out a few songs by (an interpolation of Kylie's Can't Get You Out of My Head caught my attention but not enough to make my chart!). Then, in early 2023, it's confirmed that Reiley is participating in Melodi Grand Prix, the selection process for Denmark's Eurovision entry. He later won the contest and went onto represent Denmark at the main event with his catchy track Breaking My Heart, a top 5 hit in my chart but it didn't make the final at Eurovision unfortunately.

It wasn't long after Eurovision that Reiley dropped Lovesongs, a follow-up track and his only other 2023 release. It wasn't a song I checked out immediately, and I distinctly remember deciding I may as well pop it on during my walk home from work later that day. I was pleasantly surprised by how excellently crafted a pop song it was! The production is almost a hook in itself, picking up at just the right moments, with a really infectious chorus complemented by Reiley's silky vocals. I remember going to a Vamps concert that night, but it was Lovesongs that I played all the way there and back! I couldn't get enough of it. It became Reiley's first #1 in my chart with complete ease, racking up an enormous 81 scrobbles in week 1. Reiley's yet to follow the track up, but if he delivers a bop even half as good as this one, I'll be sorted.

5 Fred Roberts - Say | 1-3-1-1-2-2-18-12-18-17-22-17-20-23-28-30-…

Solely off the back of his debut single, I booked a ticket to see Fred Roberts at his first ever headline show. The venue was The Social in London, which is a tiny venue and bar one floor underground at one of the Oxford Street backroads. I was really hyped to go despite not knowing any of the songs, bar Runaway, that he'd be performing. It's quite some going if a new artist has that impact on me immediately! The night was phenomenal and it proved just how exciting Fred's place in music is right now, with a consistent selection of songs ready to take 2024 by storm. However, between the booking of the ticket and the night arriving, I did actually get another taste of Fred's music through the release of his second single, just a couple of weeks before the gig.

Arriving on 1st September to soothe my back-to-work sorrows, Fred's second single arrived with a bang. Building on the anthemic nature of Runaway, Say hits that sweet spot even better. Lyrically, Say speaks of a relationship that's ended where Fred wasn't valued, and the chorus asks for validation - "say I wasn't just a waste, say you needed me to cry on." The chorus soars in the most spectacular way and the production elevates the track to be even better than I thought it'd be. Live, it popped off just as I'd hoped, but it's clearly made to be performed at a bigger venue. On release, Say topped my chart, becoming Fred's first #1, before returning for a further two weeks at the top in weeks 3 and 4, making it the joint second longest-running #1 hit of 2023. I think Fred's in for a really exciting 2024, and with another live gig booked for March, I'm hoping we get at least one more taste of Fred's music before then...!

4 Michael Aldag - cheating | 2-1-2-4-5-3-3-6-9-12-16-20-21-19-22-21-26-26-29-26-28-31-33-35-...

Known for his quirky yet relatable lyrics, ginger curls and hilarious TikTok videos, Michael Aldag's racked up quite the run of hits in my chart now. First charting in 2021, he hit #1 with Teenage Drama in 2022 (EOY #9) and began a solid run of top 10 hits, hitting the top tier with almost every single he's released since then. He upped the ante in 2023 with a run of six top 3s, including two #1s. One particular song was on another level, though, and it arrives almost 30 places above his next highest song of the year. cheating's story began in May when I saw Michael live on his Internet Attention Tour. I'd seen him twice before, at a tiny acoustic gig in London in summer 2022, and supporting Caity Baser just a month before this particular tour, so I was really excited to see a full-band headline show from him. It delivered on a big scale, being one of my favourite gigs of 2023, but the highlight wasn't one of the many great tracks I already knew. It came in the form of a song that wasn't yet released.

cheating is bubbly pop at its best. When hearing it live, I was taken aback by just how catchy that chorus was. Bearing in mind I didn't hear the song again until its studio version came out over two months later. I still remembered the words and melody to the chorus! The lyrics are intentionally morally conflicting, with the narrative surrounding a girl whose partner cheated on her, so she proceeds to cheat on him with the song's narrator, who declares to her boyfriend "it's not my fault that you got cheated on." It's daring but playful throughout, and its vibe put me in the mind of Carly Rae Jepsen's Kiss era, just catchy, fun, bouncy pop music, except this wins out on the lyrics too. When the studio version came out, I couldn't stop replaying it. In my chart, it debuted at #2 from a midweek release, climbing to the top in its first full week before proceeding to hang around my top 10 all summer. It's his longest-running hit in my chart, and his best EOY position to date. Bré ridiculed me for saying this could be an EOY #1 contender because it only spent one week at #1 in my chart (despite Iggy Azalea achieving the exact same feat in 2014 with Fancy), and though it didn't quite go the whole way, I think EOY #4 certainly justifies its "contender" status!!

3 The Kid LAROI - LOVE AGAIN | 1-1-2-1-4-6-8-7-9-9-13-15-18-22-25-32-24-24-26-29-27-24-29-34-37-36-38-x-18-32-x

Last year, The Kid LAROI matched Iggy Azalea's record, appearing in three consecutive EOY top 10s. The only artist to ever do it, she placed in the top tier in 2013 (Work #4), 2014 (Fancy #1, Problem #7) and 2015 (Trouble #4). Two years running is more of a rarity, but I suppose it's pretty significant to be actively releasing new music for three consecutive years. Or at least, it used to be. The digital era has seen many artists taking a more frequent release strategy to remain at the forefront of listeners' minds, but it's still a remarkable achievement to maintain such high quality for me when I'm constantly on the lookout for new music and fresh artists to keep my attention!

Now, The Kid LAROI takes the record for himself. Much like many other records he's broken since he made his debut in my chart in 2020 (notably being the only artist to top my EOY twice, a record he's guaranteed to keep for another year at least), Laroi becomes the only artist to ever appear in my EOY top 10 in four years, let alone consecutively. He also has the most EOY top 10 hits of any artist, with 2023's haul bringing him up to eight - the next highest is Laroi's collaborator and friend Justin Bieber with five. Below, I've included a list of every artist next to how many EOY top 10s they have!

As for 2023, Laroi kicked the year off with this long-awaited fan favourite. LOVE AGAIN was teased throughout 2022 and arrived just a week after the initially-intended intro track from THE FIRST TIME. LOVE AGAIN's production almost borders on country, standing out from much of his discography, while lyrically he talks of a toxic relationship that's ending, but he ponders whether it'll be rekindled. The delivery of the lyrics is one of my favourite aspects of the track, particularly the pre-chorus: "screaming in my face, kicked me out your place, I got nowhere to go." Unsurprisingly, the song debuted at #1 in my chart, trouncing other big releases from Ruel and Rita Ora, spending three non-consecutive weeks at the top. It outdoes Laroi's highest track in 2022's EOY, when Thousand Miles got to #4. New Laroi music is just a week away, so can he make it five years in my EOY top 10?

'Fly Girl' was a really fun team up of fresh talent and a legend! Here's hoping an album from the girls materialises soon :o

'I Remember Everything', 'Eat the Acid' and 'What Was I Made For?' are a trio of stunning songs in different ways, really happy they all showed up here

'Houdini' is a promising start for Dua's third album, cannot wait for more! *.*

Shakira returning to the charts, especially with a song in Spanish, was probably not on anyone's bingo card for last year but such a legendary moment
