Boney M - Mary's Boy Child / Oh My Lord

The very 70s Boney M start off this section, there is double Darlene (the better track is higher up), some Christmas Beach Boys and the rather nice Feliz Naidad.

Yeah the Low song was also one of my favourite new discoveries from this!

That, Mary Hopkin and The Residents have all been added to my Christmas playlist.

Frankie Goes to Hollywood - The Power of Love

Into the top 20, with the mighty FGTH's classic pre Christmas number 1 and a lovely little underrated song from David Essex. Nice selection!

Joni Mitchell - River

Good to see the lovely River this high (and the original not the Ellie Goulding Alexa version)! Slade are up next with a 50 year old song that increasingly sounds tired to me - bored of this 'classic' tbh.

Chris Rea - Driving Home for Christmas

Chris Rea just misses out on a top 15 placing, beaten by another is it or isn't it a Christmas song - though East 17 made a great Christmas number 1 regardless.

Good to see A Winter's Tale in the top 20. It's very different from Wombling Merry Christmas even though it was written by the same person.

Chris de Burgh - A Spaceman Came Travelling

Just the 1 point from the 100 point mark is the beautiful Spaceman Came Travelling and SHOCKER! Mariah misses the top 10! :o

Wham! - Last Christmas

Two absolute classics just outside the top 10 here. Firstly the current number 1 and best Christmas song ever Last Christmas and then Shaky's 1985 Christmas number 1.

Top 10 posted later!

Love Queen in general but I've never been super keen on their Christmas offering (I only ranked it 37th in their singles rate in this forum).

The Low song was a nice one, didn't quite make my votes but was my 2nd favourite of the songs that I listened to for the first time for this rate (after The Residents).

Type O Negative avoiding the bottom 10 we love to see *.* (I had never heard of it until 2021 but quickly become a fave x).

Hard disagree on the order of the Darlene Love songs, I'm really not a fan of 'All Alone On Christmas' at all. Eh, at least the public / playlist curators agree with me :kink:

'Feliz Navidad' is one I only came to know because of the Americanisation of playlists resulting in some imported staples but it's definitely one of the positive outcomes of that, a simple but joyful bop x

'The Power Of Love' is pretty good (though not as good as their other 2 #1s) but I snubbed it from my votes partly because I don't really consider it to be a Christmas song, it maybe deserved a couple of points but I preferred to give a mealworm to The Residents.

For shame I'd never actually heard the original version of 'River' until now, that was also not far off my votes, certainly better than the Ellie version.

I understand it being tired / not the most universal fave but Slade much too low for my liking here, always been one of my favourites!

Really wish Chris De Burgh would be more of a chart staple, gorgeous track.

Wow Mariah only narrowly beating East 17 here! I don't hold either song in particularly high regard, they're both fine but not go-tos.

Quite pleased to see Wham! missing the top 10 too :teresa: always been one of my least favourites of the big classics, not awful or anything but doesn't do a lot for me.

The Ronettes - Sleigh Ride

The gorgeous Sleigh Ride makes the top 10 - a gift for Christmas indeed!

The Pretenders - 2000 Miles

Personally not one of my favourites, but I can't agree with the 146 points!

Brenda Lee - Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree

Now this is a classic I can get behind! I first loved this thanks to Home Alone but it is since become quite the chart staple and finally made it to the top of the US Hot 100 a couple of weeks ago.

Not bad for Trans Siberian Orchestra! Hope some of you made a good discovery out of it, it's one of the most epic Christmas covers of all time and a staple for the season for me <3

Merry Xmas Everybody is still pretty great for me and I feel ranked too low, but otherwise I think we've got this rather good so far. Especially approve of Mariah, Wham and Shaky missing the top 10, I don't hate them but they've been permanently tainted by overplay and are just so safe, I rarely visit them out of choice.

Great to see Sleigh Ride make the top 10, it's always so joyful to hear, as is their version of Frosty the Snowman.

Jona Lewie - Stop the Cavalry

Ooompa pa and dub a dub a dub dub! Not the highest anti war song in the countdown, but a great track from 1980.

Saint Etienne - I Was Born On Christmas Day

The highest 1990s song on the list and rightfully so. Also featuring Tim Burgess off The Charlatans.

John And Yoko And The Plastic Ono Band With The Harlem Community Choir - Happy Xmas (War Is Over)

Happy Christmas Kyoko, Happy Christmas Julian.

I always thought that was Yoko and John until I actually listened properly! Lovely anti war song, helped considerably by the Harlem Community Choir.

I still prefer the Idols version :kink:

Wizzard - I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday

Deservedly highest of the 1973 Christmas classics, Wizzard just miss out on the top 3.

Not quite the highest 1970s song in the countdown though.....

The Waitresses - Christmas Wrapping

Well this is a pleasant surprise! Breaking the 200 joint barrier but never a top 40 hit. One day, one day!!

Of course Wizzard had to be #4 after it's official peak. Not overly bothered by Wham or Mariah particular missing the top 10 although I do enjoy the latter still a lot (could do with not hearing it for several years though) but Shaky missing top 10 -_- also good to see 'Spaceman...' do well, as well as Type O Negative missing bottom 10.

Jona Lewie slaying the top 10 too!
