Sorry again for checking out of this for a couple of months but I’m very much back and raring to go with the results!

I have added up the scores from the 17 voters so far. :w00t:

I’ll give it until the end of the weekend. If anyone else wants to prod Bray to vote please do so as it would be a shame not to have his input. ;)

Last day! I guess if you haven’t voted in the last 3 months you probably won’t now but who knows?

Apols for taking 84 years, just as well the #3s session was cancelled today so I spent that time relistening to the playlist again as it's been way too long since the SyncTube session for me to do this from memory oop x

I don't remember what I said about some of these songs during the listenthrough so who knows if my opinions have remained consistent since then

Assuming no more voters that means we had 18 participants, and tomorrow we’ll find out which is the only song to have scored 0 across the board. :o

You Really Got A Hold On Me

And so this really had a hold on precisely no-one. It was included on the 1963 album “With The Beatles”, and is a cover of a Smokey Robinson & The Miracles song from the year before.

Listening to the original and this side by side, John’s raspy vocals do add a bit of bite to the track but overall I think it works better as a soul song than as a rock ‘n’ roll song. That said, dead last with nul points feels a little harsh for it.

Old Brown Shoe

Voter: …ready for it

This was written by George Harrison and he’s also the lead performer. It was released as the B side to “The Ballad Of John And Yoko” in 1969, and appears on various compilation albums but not on any of the main studio albums. George has received praise from music critics for his guitar solo on the track.

Although it didn’t make my votes and George’s other songs in the running here are much better, I do rather like the grittiness of it and I’d have quite liked it to finish a little higher.

Baby It’s You

Voter: WhoOdyssey

01/04/1995 The Beatles Baby It's You {7}-9-27-41-57-73-71R(9)->7

A Burt Bacharach song, this was originally released by The Shirelles in 1961, and then was recorded by the Beatles and included on the “Please Please Me” album in 1963. Later it was included on the 1994 “Live At The BBC” album, and then released as a single in 1995.

I don’t hugely care for this cover, and in fact think the version by The Shirelles is more interesting.

Aww aren’t they cute in the video!

This wasn’t on any of the main UK albums but was released as the B side to “I Want To Hold Your Hand” in November 1963. Apparently John had a number of influences in writing this, including Smokey Robinson and

“To Know Him Is To Love Him” by the Teddy Bears. It’s a sweet one but probably doesn’t grab the listener like most of the other songs here.

awww at This Boy, obv just edged out of my points, but the B side was part of my chilldhood as dad bought I Want To Hold Your Hand and Can't Buy Me Love. Definitely deserved a bit higher....

The other 3 very much not faves, and the original versions of the covers are much better...

Roll Over Beethoven

Voters:

WhoOdyssey 10

A 1956 Chuck Berry song that has been widely covered and was ranked one of the 100 greatest songs of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. This 1963 version was included on “With The Beatles”.

This seems another fairly inessential early Beatles cover to me, but the points are really ramping up from single figures now.

They might be probably the greatest band in history but their version of Roll Over Beethoven is nothing compared to the original (even if it is damn good)
