Disco (Guest List Edition) (2020)

The one thing I remember from Disco’s release was the chart battle on the UK Albums Chart against Little Mix’s Confetti and that’s about it really. At the time I was hoping Little Mix would take the crown as I’d enjoyed their album but I’d never given Disco a chance. That changes now.

Magic is up first and I really enjoyed it, it seems like a great choice to lead the album. I get the impression one track in that this will be the perfect partner album to Light Years and if that’s the case I’m definitely ok with that. Miss A Thing was a very strong follow up track and one I could certainly see myself going back to again. Real Groove was one I wasn’t sure on at the start but by the end of it I had really come to enjoy it. I’m really enjoying the energy of Monday Blues and this whole so far, it’s sounding like it would’ve been the perfect antidote for those Covid lockdowns. I also found myself really enjoying lead single Say Something, it’s great to be back to having some great lead singles again after a few misfires for me. Last Chance was another highlight and Where Does The DJ Go was also quite good. I do feel the slight danger of this album slipping into the ‘everything sounding to similar territory though. Dancefloor Darling was another that I found to be pretty good though Unstoppable to Til You Love Someone all seem to be that part of an album where they just come and go, but I thought Fine Wine was interesting and I could see the chorus if this being suited well to TikTok potentially. I also quite enjoyed Hey Lonely.

On to the Guest List edition tracks now and I’m not really keen on A Second To Midnight, but I’m also not really a fan of Years & Years except for one or two of their songs. Kiss of Life faired a much better and I think I’d have it in the top half of this album. Can’t Stop Writing Songs About You fell a little flat for me and Real Groove (Studio 2054 Remix with Dua Lipa) didn’t quite match the original Real Groove for me.

Overall this wasn’t a bad album but not great either, I do appreciate the sound of it though. I just feel in some places it felt like one long endless mega mix, which I guess some people may like. I really did like the three singles though.

Singles I liked: Magic, Say Something, Real Groove

Album Tracks I liked: Miss A Thing, Monday Blues, Last Chance, Hey Lonely

Golden (2018)

I was probably at the lowest most point in my causal Kylie Minogue fan state heading into 2018 and the release of Golden. Kiss Me Once even in 2014 completely passed me by and 2010’s Aphrodite came and went pretty quickly, so it hadn’t been since Wow form her album X that I’d liked a Kylie Minogue single or going back further to 2004’s Red Blooded Woman since I’d truly loved one of Kylie’s singles. So when Dancing was released I found my interest at what seemed an all time low and I didn’t give it much of a chance at all.

Upon starting up Golden the first track and lead single Dancing begin and I’m already really liking the sound of this much more than almost everything from Kiss Me Once. It’s quite the earworm and I hope sets the pace for what will be a return to form album for Kylie. Second single Stop Me From Falling is up next and if I’m being honest this is the song that got me back on board as a fan in 2018. From the moment I first heard it I was a huge fan, so much so that I went and made a play list of my favourite singles from her and started to dig a little deeper into her singles discography. Hearing it again now I love it just as much now as I did in 2018. Stop Me From Falling will always be a special song as I mentioned before it’s the one that brought me back to being a fan. Title track Golden was very pleasant as well and I’m really finding myself enjoying this Pop-Country style from Kylie, it’s quite catchy. A quarter of the way through now with A Lifetime To Repair and it’s another strong offering, one I probably wished I’d taken more notice of when it was released as a single in 2018. Sincerely Yours is another strong showing and probably joins Dancing and Stop Me From Falling in my top three from Golden so far. Golden is sounding like such a return to form so far!

One Last Kiss I found really leant into that country sound more than many of the other songs so far, but I find that it really suited it. Live A Little was one I found to be a little disappointing and not matching the tracks before it, but it was still ok. Shelby ’68, Radio and Love on seemed ok but came and went without leaving an impression. Raining Glitter was a pleasant surprise and helped get Golden back on track for me. Music’s To Sad Without You was better than I was anticipating, a really nice surprise. Lost Without You was another one that stood out to me ass well, another one of those classic why is this a deluxe only track situations. I enjoyed Every Little Part Of Me too, but could see why it was a deluxe track. Rollin’ wasn’t that bad but sounded like a lesser version of Dancing and closing track Low Blow unfortunately didn’t make much of a connection with me.

Overall I felt this was an album of two halves, The first six tracks were very strong and Lost Without You towards the end was great as well, unfortunately the rest were for me were middle of the road standard. Saying that Golden was a massive improvement on Kiss Me Once and I found myself really enjoying the Pop-Country sound. Stop Me From Falling remains the best thing on it for me with Dancing a close second.

Singles I liked: Stop Me From Falling, Dancing, Yours Sincerely, A Lifetime To Repair, Music’s To Sad Without You

Album Tracks I liked: One Last Kiss, Lost Without You

Great review, I do like golden alot but it's my least fave of her bmg albums but it has some great songs, stop me from falling I liked but I've grown to love it more and more but dancing and music too sad without are my faves I adore both and dancing going top 40 waa a real moment at the time. Golden brought kylie back, her popularity was on the rise and the album was a great return to form after kylie Christmas and kiss me once. There was excitement throughout the golden era and they will well planning the album which led to one of best chart runs in a long time.

I was in the supermarket this evening and Got To Be Certain came on over the speakers. It took me back to the start of doing these album listen throughs. 😊❤️

I do really like Disco as an album, but it hasn't aged as well for me in hindsight. The production isn't that great for a lot of it and in parts it is incredibly samey. It almost feels like it was squarely aimed at the middle-aged audience too. Also I can't stand 'Monday Blues', it drives me up the wall.

There's still some real gems though. 'Dance Floor Darling' is my red hot favourite, it's the one I kept going back to over and over again for hours when I first heard the album.

The guest list album was disappointing as I think the additions were all very forgettable. I think re issues are a weak point for Kylie as I always feel she never fully nails it.

As an album I love Disco, it's an upbeat feel good album and keeps the momentum going through out but based in your views on previous albums I am surprised that Celebrate you didnt stand out for you.

Great review, I think your feelings are the same as many others for the album.

Personally it’s in my Top 3 of Kylie albums and I love it just as much now as I did them, partly is probably due to memories associated with it, I was living in the US at the time and was lucky to meet Kylie many times on her US trip and saw her at her 400 capacity NYC show.

I was disappointed we had a total 360 in sound from Golden to Disco - I hoped some of the country lite vibes would continue into the next era!

I would be surprised if she ever touched on it again! Not even the writing style followed through.

Opposite to One for Sorrow but I actually feel that Shelby 68 and Radio On are two of the gems on the album! Some of the more yee-haw stuff on Golden strikes me as being less authentic (looking at Rollin’, Low Blow and I have to admit A Lifetime to Repair which I went off as time passed).

I think a slight problem with the album is that it wasn’t originally conceived to be country leaning. I know there’s at least one track on it which started off as a pop song which they went back to to retool to fit the theme. Might have been One Last Kiss. A producer also admitted he didn’t have experience when it came to country flavoured production.

Here it is:

An album expanding on this sound & Lost Without You… I want it!

Love this and the subsequent album version, it certainly leans itself to being better in the original form though.

Lost Without You has grown over the years, I never fully understand the big fan love for it.

One last kiss is another one that has grown on me alot over the last while.

Sometimes it's great to put on a kylie album and play it in full as sometimes I can connect better with songs long after the dust has settled since they were released and those 2 songs are examples of it.

On the other hand some album songs are just instant that stay with you forever and the love of them never wains examples of these for me are turn into love, enjoy yourself, I'm over dreaming over you, I don't need anyone, bittersweet goodbye, disco down, fragile and like a drug.

I’ve just listened to a snippet of it and I do think it passed me by a little in my listen through. I think Disco is well worth a second listen as Celebrate You sounded alright.

I guess doing all these albums in short space of time there was bound to be a song or two to completely pass me by by mistake.

Disco remains a strong Kylie album that I hugely enjoy as Kylie sounds like she had so much fun with it despite it been a lockdown recording.

If Kylie tours Tension I hope a few Disco tracks make the set list.

Tension (2023)

And just like that I’ve made it all the way to Kylie Minogue’s most current album Tension which was released in September 2023, just last year. I’ve only heard one song from this, the lead single Padam Padam, so I’ve got no idea what to expect. Will it be like Disco? Or maybe Golden? Or maybe something different. I guess I’m about to find out.

We are off to a cracking start and what I’m sure many will think was the pop surprise of 2023, Padam Padam. Not that Kylie recording and releasing a great song is a surprise, the surprise is that this went all the way to #8 in the UK and #19 in Australia. Her first big hit in almost a decade. Like many of her other singles I wasn’t sold on this on first listen but I now love it, her best lead single since Spinning Around for me. Hold On To Now which serves as third single is another very strong track and I’m really loving that synth-pop sound. Things We Do For Love was another one that I found to be quite enjoyable, I’m enjoying this more than Disco so far. Title track Tension is another highlight and that “touch me right there, baby break the tension” line is something that’ll probably get stuck in my head for a few days. You Still Get Me High was such a lovely little tracks and is definitely something I can see myself going back to. Green Lige was another pleasant listen and Vegas High sounds like it’d work great as a single, though that might also be because I think it could have a great music video. I didn’t mind 10 out of 10, but it would’ve been better without those spoken word parts which I found a little off putting. Story was nice and sounded like something Marina (And The Diamonds) might release. Of the bonus tracks Love Train was alright and I liked the 99 lives in Super Mario line. Just Imagine didn’t do much for me but Somebody To Love was such a nice way to close out the album, really nice track.

Overall I was very impressed with Tension, it did sound a bit samey in some place, but unlike some of the other albums where I’ve mentioned this I really enjoyed this one. Although Tension isn’t Kylie’s best it’s certainly got me eagerly waiting for what comes next.

Singles I liked: Padam Padam, Hold On To Now, Tension

I feel like I need to give some or all of the bottom 5 albums another listen, as I think I may like some of them more with a second listen. I'm guessing that some of the albums do take a little bit of time to grown on you. :)

Disco, Body Language & Kiss Me Once are ones I'm really ken to give a second listen to, though probably not for a little while. :)

I think Disco might improve for you after another listen or two but if your like me further listens of kiss me once and body language won't make much difference.

Well that's all come to an end and I must say it was a very enjoyable experience. Thank you very much to everyone that read and commented along the way with me. Going into this I wasn't sure what to expect as I'd like a fair portion of Kylie's singles but mainly from the 97-04 eras and bits and pieces before that. It was great to dive much deeper into Kylie's back catalogue and get to experience what I presume most or all of you have experienced over years and decades.

I appreciated all the comments along the way and everyone sharing their own thoughts and experiences. Album preferences can be quite the individual opinion, so thank you for coming along with me while I listened to Kylie's albums and shared my thoughts, experiences and memories. I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did! :)

I started this a somewhat casual Kylie Minogue fan but I finish this with a great love for her music and back catalogue!
