April 14, 2024Apr 14 Author Updated! So far this year, no album that has entered at #3 to #10 has managed to stay Top 40 for a second week.
May 11, 2024May 11 Author Updated! 29 Top 10 albums have fallen straight out of the Top 100 in week 2, one more than the number of albums that managed a second week in the Top 100.
July 3, 2024Jul 3 Author Updated! Half way through 2024 now. So far, 42 Top 10 albums have fallen straight out of the Top 100 the following week, compared to 39 which managed to stay Top 100.
November 25, 2024Nov 25 Author Finally updated this! Stats (131 albums) 20 albums stayed in the Top 10 [15.27%] // 111 albums fell out of the Top 10 [84.73%] 26 albums stayed in the Top 20 [19.85%] // 105 albums fell out of the Top 20 [80.15%] 36 albums stayed in the Top 40 [27.48%] // 95 albums fell out of the Top 40 [72.52%] 56 albums stayed in the Top 75 [42.75%] // 75 albums fell out of the Top 75 [57.25%] 62 albums stayed in the Top 100 [47.33%] // 69 albums fell out of the Top 100 [52.67%] 95 albums stayed in the Top 200 [72.52%] // 36 albums fell out of the Top 200 [27.48%] So it's still the case that more than half of this year's Top 10 charting albums fall out of the Top 100 in week 2, and over a quarter of this year's Top 10s fell straight out of the Top 200. I've edited the lists so it only includes new albums from 2024. So for instance I've excluded Chappell Roan whose album was released in 2023, even though it didn't chart until 2024 - but nevertheless I've made a note at the top of the thread that her album peaked at #1 and fell from #1 to #2. I'm also excluding reissues such as Oasis. I did keep Queen I though because it counted as a new entry. I'm not sure if I overlooked anything else in the list that had already been released or charted pre-2024, but if anyone spots anything then let me know! Or any mistakes in general.
November 25, 2024Nov 25 Of the 39 albums which debuted between 6-10, only one stayed Top 40 the following week, and only four even stayed Top 100 :o
November 25, 2024Nov 25 the occ needs to do something and count album streams properly like FLO, I checked yesterday and they were #16 on Apple Albums Streams, proper counts not playlist but sure they're gonna get a big fat zero from streams per the occ way of counting and do a 3-out if you look at the album charts is like no one is streaming the new albums but people are, even in week 2 :) what people are not streaming is all those fake Best Ofs the album chart should reflect album streams but it's now which artist has more weekly listeners on spotify
November 25, 2024Nov 25 Author Of the 39 albums which debuted between 6-10, only one stayed Top 40 the following week, and only four even stayed Top 100 :o It's a shame to see so many new albums being incredibly short-lived. :( I miss when albums which weren't even all that successful could nevertheless build up a reasonable chart run before exiting. the occ needs to do something and count album streams properly like FLO, I checked yesterday and they were #16 on Apple Albums Streams, proper counts not playlist but sure they're gonna get a big fat zero from streams per the occ way of counting and do a 3-out if you look at the album charts is like no one is streaming the new albums but people are, even in week 2 :) what people are not streaming is all those fake Best Ofs the album chart should reflect album streams but it's now which artist has more weekly listeners on spotify It continues to amaze me that the OCC (and the UK music industry at large) seemingly aren't at all fussed about the state of the album chart and what is represents. I mean, while there's no getting around the fact that most album pure sales plummet in week 2, at least these albums could hang around for a bit longer if the Greatest Hits/catalogue albums were downweighted (or removed entirely x) while streaming was weighted more favourably to new releases - as is the case in the singles chart. I believe that streaming sites don't do a good enough job of promoting albums, it's largely very geared towards playlists and mixes. Also, Spotify etc should strive to present themselves in a way that is more specific to the country you're from. UK Spotify is heavily influenced by the US, so it's harder for newer British (or non-US artists) to have as much impact as they could do. As you say, it's inevitable that FLO's album will be a 1 week wonder and that's a pity. I know these discussions happen regularly and nothing changes, I wish it would!
January 14Jan 14 Author Finally completed this! http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=269669 In 2024, in an album's second week: 22 albums stayed in the Top 10 [15.71%] // 118 albums fell out of the Top 10 [84.29%] 28 albums stayed in the Top 20 [20.00%] // 112 albums fell out of the Top 20 [80.00%] 39 albums stayed in the Top 40 [27.86%] // 101 albums fell out of the Top 40 [72.14%] 62 albums stayed in the Top 75 [44.29%] // 78 albums fell out of the Top 75 [55.71%] 68 albums stayed in the Top 100 [48.57%] // 72 albums fell out of the Top 100 [51.43%] 102 albums stayed in the Top 200 [72.86%] // 38 albums fell out of the Top 200 [27.14%] Not too sure if I'll make a new thread for 2025, but we'll see!
January 14Jan 14 It's a shame to see so many new albums being incredibly short-lived. :( I miss when albums which weren't even all that successful could nevertheless build up a reasonable chart run before exiting. It continues to amaze me that the OCC (and the UK music industry at large) seemingly aren't at all fussed about the state of the album chart and what is represents. Dirca discussed this in another thread - I think the trouble is that any album that isn’t propped up by streaming is really doing hardly anything after a couple of weeks and isn’t going to be in the chart whether or not you exclude Greatest Hits. Whether excluding those would really make for a more “satisfying” album chart is unclear and you’d probably end up with more studio albums that have some of an artist’s greatest hits tacked on to the end just to stop them dropping too quickly.
