August 29, 2024Aug 29 I don't think Tiesto's music was that commercial in 2001, its sensible deep trance. It's true that his post-trance career has been more commercial, but he was definitely considered commercial as a trance DJ. He was making gabber in the 90s and then jumped on the trance bandwagon when it got popular and he was one of the commercial trance DJs being ridiculed at the time.
August 30, 2024Aug 30 2001 week 41: '2 People' is my favourite from this section <3 I first discovered it on Radio 1's One Hit Wonders of the Millennium show and instantly fell in love with the dreamy, swirly production and Minnie sample. Shame there's just an inferior 2011 reworking on Spotify although I do own it in proper form on vinyl at least. 'Candy' was a good discovery here also! I see it samples 'Make It Easy On Yourself' by the Walker Brothers which I do love
August 31, 2024Aug 31 Author Another group without a huge standout but I do think “Izzo” has aged very well. Nice to rediscover Left Eye’s unique only hit which sadly isn’t on Spotify. 8 Jay-Z Izzo (H.O.V.A.) Produced by Kanye West and sampling "I Want You Back" by the Jacksons in a very inspired way, a joyous hip hop track 7 Mis-Teeq One Night Stand I love the violin riff going round and round on this: it's a catchy and classy track and pleasingly different from "All I Want" 7 Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes The Block Party Her only solo hit a few months before she dies: quite chaotic but an interesting and unusual RnB track that I enjoy a lot 6 Wideboys Featuring Dennis G Sambuca 1st and biggest hit for this UK garage duo: of its time with a similar feel to "Do You Really Like It?", but a catchy fun song 6 Britney Spears I'm A Slave 4 U Lead single from her 3rd eponymous album: I don't love this track but I appreciate it's something different and grown up 5 K2 Family Bouncing Flow Another garage group here with their only hit and indeed a very bouncy energy: enjoyable but not distinctive or memorable 4 Genius Cru Course Bruv Their 2nd and last hit: has a similar frenetic energy to "Boom Selection" but I think much more chaotic and works less well 4 Jagged Edge Where The Party At 1st hit for this US RnB group: overall it's quite ordinary but Nelly does give it a lift with his energetic parts and the "uh-oh"s 3 A*Teens Halfway Around The World Last and smallest of their 4 hits: not my thing and I find it formulaic but a catchy tune and the low peak feels unfortunate 2 Afroman Because I Got High 911th #1: it does have some novelty value but it's so childlike musically and the entertaining lyrics don't bear many listens 2 Brian Harvey And The Refugee Crew Loving You (Ole Ole Ole) I strongly dislike the incredibly naff "Ole Ole Ole" chorus and can barely see past that to the decent Wyclef produced track GRKmpn3SBdw 2001 Week 44: #987 03/11/2001 Five Closer To Me 4 {4}-9-15-21-34-29-47-55-62-54-64-68R(2)->12 #988 03/11/2001 Gabrielle Don't Need The Sun To Shine (To Make Me Smile) 9 {9}-15-21-24-38-49-61->7 #989 03/11/2001 System Of A Down Chop Suey! 17 {17}-29-46-60->4 #990 03/11/2001 Gorillaz Rock The House 18 {18}-39-59-61-73-73-64-62->8 #991 03/11/2001 Par-T-One Vs INXS I'm So Crazy 19 {19}-33-45-58-75-71R(2)->6 #992 03/11/2001 O-Town We Fit Together 20 {20}-41-69-74R(5)->4 #993 03/11/2001 Push The Legacy 22 {22}-38-54-71->4 #994 03/11/2001 Weezer Island In The Sun 31 {31}-62->2 #995 03/11/2001 Kelis Young Fresh N' New 32 {32}-55->2 #996 03/11/2001 Armand Van Helden Why Can't You Free Some Time 34 {34}-59->2
September 1, 2024Sep 1 Jay-Z didnt chart for me, so I can only guess I was underwhelmed by the sampling. Mis-teeq though was a 9/10, a goodie and second only to Scandalous I think. The Block Party was a fair enough 6/10 from me, and such a mad way to die for poor Lisa who'd been having a bad time of it, what with the arson and relationship issues. Sambuca didnt chart for me, but the comment about Do You Really Like It explains all, oops! I'm A Slave 4 U I really didn't rate that much, easily her worst track to date, just a 4/10 and that's generous. KC, KT, K3, K7 have all charted for me, but K2 passed me by. Genius Cru? Wishful thinking there guys! Jagged Edge didn't make the cut, Nelly or not. A*Teens, do I even need to say anything? Afroman got on my nerves after a while, but it speaks volumes for this bunch that a 5/10 gives it third place here :o Or it would have if Br.i.an hadnt had a Wyclef boost to a 7/10. Honestly, the second-best of this motley crew here. Entering my charts this week and the previous in 2001 were a whole bunch of classic pop tracks not turned up here yet, so I assume as was the norm that radio was playing them weeks ahead of release and I just went for them and ignored the ones you could actually buy, bar those noted above with a rating. There be some classics on the way! (read that in a movie pirate West Country voice) :o
September 3, 2024Sep 3 Author Today’s winner is a lowly #17 hit but with 1.4 billion Spotify streams and counting, and deservedly so. 9 System Of A Down Chop Suey! 1st hit for this Armenian-American metal band formed in 1994: an epic, dramatic and gut-wrenching Biblically inspired track 8 Weezer Island In The Sun Very different to the gritty "Hash Pipe" but a beautifully sunny Brian Wilson-esque track which is their most streamed 8 Gorillaz Rock The House So different from their other hits: a stylish jazzy rap rock song with a sampled horn loop played by Johnny Dankworth 7 Push The Legacy One of the strongest club tracks from DJ Mike Dierickx, this has a very euphoric and ethereal theme when it really hits 7 Par-T-One Vs INXS I'm So Crazy Only hit for this Italian electronic duo based on the INXS song "Just Keep Walking": a great club track using the sample well 6 Armand Van Helden Why Can't You Free Some Time Sampling "Takin' The Time To Find" by Dave Mason, an enjoyable Daft Punk-esque track with guitars and auto-tuned vocal 5 Kelis Young Fresh N' New Her last Top 40 as lead until she comes back big in 2004: a great punchy beat here but not sure the song has enough to it 4 Gabrielle Don't Need The Sun To Shine (To Make Me Smile) Her 10th and final Top 10 hit: this is sweet and a pleasant listen but rather safe and lacking anything to make it special 3 Five Closer To Me Last of their 10 hits all of which made the Top 10 impressively: this is one of those rather wet and weepy farewell singles 2 O-Town We Fit Together At least this doesn't have embarrassing lyrics like "Liquid Dreams" but it really is quite limp, saccharine and forgettable CSvFpBOe8eY 2001 Week 45: #997 10/11/2001 iio Rapture 2 {2}-5-8-10-19-30-37-36-33-39-48-62->12 #998 10/11/2001 Alicia Keys Fallin' 3 {3}-4-5-6-11-17-29-44-57-69->10 #999 10/11/2001 Jennifer Lopez I'm Real 4 {4}-7-11-17-20-29-31-31-27-29-35-40-54-48-59->15 #1000 10/11/2001 The Dandy Warhols Bohemian Like You {2001} 5 {5}-10-16-25-36-41-46-52-55-63->10 #1001 10/11/2001 Natalie Imbruglia That Day 11 {11}-27-41-65-66R(4)->5 #1002 10/11/2001 The Corrs Would You Be Happier 14 {14}-32-42-60-69->5 #1003 10/11/2001 Limp Bizkit Boiler 18 {18}-26-35-51-71->5 #1004 10/11/2001 Andrew W.K. September 3, 2024Sep 3 Love 'The Legacy' and 'Chop Suey' I really liked that Par-T-One track at the time and for some time after, but I haven't heard it in years! I have a real soft spot for that Gabrielle song.
September 4, 2024Sep 4 I’ve learnt something new from this thread. I-town had more songs outside of Liquid Dreams.
September 4, 2024Sep 4 System Of A Down never charted for me, sorry, a bit too noisy and shouty. Weezer OTOH are still fabulous, quirky and tuneful but they can rock it out when they want to. Buddy Holly is one of the most-streamed songs of the 90's true fact. Quite right too, and I loved Island In The Sun 9/10. Gorillaz, totally passed me by, and the reference to Johnny Dankworth explains why. Sorry, I had to sit through Johnny & his missus Cleo Laine jazz-freestyling on variety shows in the 60's and 70's and it wasn't always to my taste: "Just. Sing. The. Notes!" Never was a fan of adding 10 extra notes into 2 or 3 notes of sheet music. Cleo is still a legend though, 96 years young and a ground-breaking singer! Push left no legacy with me, sadly, but dance-wise the INXS revamp I liked though, 7/10, and Armand was worth a 6/10. Kelis was sadly into her "miss" phase on her hit/miss singles career with me on this one, and Gabrielle was doing OK 5/10's here. Closer To me was a "so long and thanks for all the fish" 8/10 from me for Five, while O Town had a surprising 7/10 - pretty good for a track I don't remember!
September 5, 2024Sep 5 Author And we’re over 1,000 tracks reviewed in this thread. :cheer: You couldn’t have a much more varied 4 new entries in the Top 5 then this week and I like them all. It’s a great slice of guitar rock coming out on top. 9 The Dandy Warhols Bohemian Like You {2001} A re-release after it was in an ad: so much to love here including the drum build the harmonies and the retro guitar style 8 Alicia Keys Fallin' Debut for this US singer songwriter and pianist, and a beautiful 12/8 time soul ballad; the middle 8 is my favourite part 8 Ja Rule Featuring Case Livin' It Up We have 2 of Ja Rule's best tracks here: this bright and breezy number with a compelling beat will reach #5 on re-release 7 Jennifer Lopez I'm Real The original "I'm Real" is dull but I'm judging the more popular Murder Inc version, which I think is a very strong RnB track 7 Natalie Imbruglia That Day Her 1st hit for 3 years and this rather underperformed but it's really good: I enjoy the gushy stream of consciousness style 6 iio Rapture Biggest hit for this US dance duo: I do enjoy this and the production is great, but find the chorus too basic and repetitive 6 The Corrs Would You Be Happier Released alongside their Greatest Hits album, this is nothing Earth-shattering but a really lovely well written pop song 6 Green Day Waiting The 3rd single from "Warning": this has a memorable melody that's similar to "Downtown"; very nice but typical Green Day 5 Slipknot Left Behind Lead single from their 2nd album: it's quite harrowing and screams: not 100% my cup of tea but a well composed track 5 Andrew W.K. Party Hard Another hard rock track and the only Top 40 for this US singer: anthemic and rousing but a little all one dynamic for me 4 Angelic Stay With Me Their last hit: it has the usual sweet, floaty and tuneful vocals but somehow feels slightly limp in comparison to their others 4 Miss Shiva Dreams Only hit for this DJ with a cover of a 90s track by Quench with a harder bassline: good track but nothing very original here 3 2Pac Letter 2 My Unborn I suppose this is lyrically quite poignant as a posthumous single but I think it falls a little flat and is not one of his strongest 3 Limp Bizkit Boiler You can tell a mile off this is Limp Bizkit and it's ground they've covered before that I don't particularly need to hear again 3 Ricky Tomlinson Are You Lookin' At Me 1st of a couple of novelty hits for the comedian: this could be far worse and is quite a fun and bouncy Celtic style song CU3mc0yvRNk 2001 Weeks 46 and 47: #1012 17/11/2001 Westlife Queen Of My Heart 1 {1}-2-4-10-15-22-25-28-36-47-57-66-67-51-61->15 #1013 17/11/2001 So Solid Crew They Don't Know 3 {3}-9-20-35-45-53-55-45-54->9 #1014 17/11/2001 Artists Against Aids Worldwide What's Going On? 6 {6}-13-21-37-48-59-72-64-60-70-64-72->12 #1015 17/11/2001 Cher The Music's No Good Without You 8 {8}-17-22-30-49-60-69-56-59-75->10 #1016 17/11/2001 D12 Fight Music 11 {11}-19-30-43-65->5 #1017 17/11/2001 The Strokes Last Nite 14 {14}-22-40-57-74->5 #1018 17/11/2001 Beverley Knight Get Up 17 {17}-28-49-72->4 #1019 17/11/2001 Depeche Mode Freelove 19 {19}-37-58->3 #1020 17/11/2001 Daft Punk Harder Better Faster Stronger 25 {25}-40-59->3 #1021 17/11/2001 Embrace Make It Last 35 {35}-75->2 #1022 17/11/2001 Groove Armada My Friend 36 {36}-54->2 #1023 17/11/2001 Bjork Pagan Poetry 38 {38}-70->2 #1024 24/11/2001 Blue If You Come Back 1 {1}-2-8-16-23-21-21-30-43-46-63-52-55->13 #1025 24/11/2001 Destiny's Child Emotion 3 {3}-7-15-28-32-30-26-32-46-51-71-71-60-68->14 #1026 24/11/2001 Lighthouse Family (I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be) Free/One 6 {6}-12-21-32-43-45-49-62-68->9 #1027 24/11/2001 Bubba Sparxxx Ugly 7 {7}-13-23-33-42-50-44-46-54-74->10 #1028 24/11/2001 Blu Cantrell Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops!) 12 {12}-23-31-44-50-54-59-61-73->9 #1029 24/11/2001 The White Stripes Hotel Yorba 26 {26}-50->2 #1030 24/11/2001 Ladies First Messin' 30 {30}-54->2 #1031 24/11/2001 Delerium Featuring Rani Underwater 33 {33}-57->2 #1032 24/11/2001 Reel Lift Me Up 39 {39}->1
September 6, 2024Sep 6 Bohemian Like You at top-notch classic 10/10 from me, rollicking fun. Fallin' was a 9/10 at the time, but I seem to have fallen out of love with it these days, it stills quite recent to me and it got a LOT of radio exposure, more of an 8/10 at the mo. I couldnt even name 2 Ja Rule tracks so I expected none would have charted - wrongly! 5 of 'em did for me, but this one just got the 4/10. J-Lo, I'm Real, 7/10 one of her more average efforts of the time (and I also only charted the remix version). That Day an underwhelming 5/10, and we are def into my clubbing tracks now, Rapture was a DJ biggie with a long chart run for me, but it peaked top 20, so it's prob borderline 9/10, strong 8/10. Would You Be Happier hit the same peak as Iio but had a short chart run so 8/10 is prob generous, more 7/10. Green Day having one of there many "off" singles in their career of "On/Off" releases for me, Slipknot a 0/10 of course, Party Hard more radio friendly and a 7/10, Angelic keep the non-charters coming, Miss Shiva followed suit, but I liked the 2Pac track, 6/10. Boiler was more tepid than hot, 4/10, but I listed it as a double A with Faith. I dont need to check if Ricky Tomlinson charted, he's great but I wouldnt have liked it much!
September 7, 2024Sep 7 Glad to see Bohemian Like You top your rank for that week. It made #1 for me twice as I loved it so much, all of the singles from the album were good but that one was the most obviously commercial
September 7, 2024Sep 7 I prefer Avicii's remix of Nadia Ali's solo version of Rapture, but the original iio track is good. Bohemian Like You is good; and probably not actually about what is now part of Czechia! Appropriate that dandy* likes the Dandy Warhols! Fallin' is good too. Edited September 7, 2024Sep 7 by TheSnake
September 8, 2024Sep 8 I have been reading every update Julian but fell way behind due to a hugely busy period at work! Instead of trying to comment fully on the nine batches that I missed, I'll just do a roundup comment for each week. ---------- I think Follow Me by Uncle Kracker was my favourite! I did love that at the time and it went top three in my chart, although can't say it's one I hear around much these days. I also really liked that Emma Bunton song, possibly more than What Took You So Long. The radio edit is better but it's not on Spotify of course. I also thought that Louise cover was pretty good? It's not a huge favourite but it does something different to the original and Louise sounded engaged on it and she somehow made it into quite a sexy song when it never was originally, I'm not surprised it was a big hit for her. ---------- I know it wasn't reviewed but definitely N-Trance's Set You Free (Rob Searle Remix) in the second week, my favourite song of all-time in that specific glorious remix which was the catalyst for it going top five that time. It wasn't really a straight re-release even though the original version was on CD2 and for some reason Kelly was trotting out the original on Top of the Pops and other music shows. Now 50 also featured the original. But radio and TV were playing the remix so it's a strange situation. Of that batch, I bought and loved Barthezz, Darude (fab vocal track) and Artful Dodger (this is lovely and Melanie Blatt sounds great on it I think). I also liked Starlight, Hunter (another great track from No Angel) and allSTARS (should have been released at Halloween though). The Spiritualized song is a bit overwrought yet I do very vividly remember it so they must have achieved something of an earworm in their hunt to be anthemic. Not a fan of Bob's pointless take on Mambo No.5 or Hey Baby (one of the few UK No.1s that could be described as schlager - and DJ Otzi is very much that brand of Bavarian party music that I could see easily grates on people). ---------- I didn't rate much in that third week. Kylie is my favourite and I can see why it was such a huge hit of course but it's never been one of my Kylie favourites personally. It definitely returned her superstar status though after Spinning Around had elevated her back that way the year before. F.E.A.R. I agree is a very captivating listen and probably my second favourite. Smooth Criminal is third, actually this I think is an extremely well executed cover - to the point that I find it just as memorable as MJ's original, in a very different way. Thought it worked unexpectedly well as a punk rock song and the band had a great energy. ---------- Completely agree with Family Affair at the top, an absolutely effortless gem from Mary J and still heard so often today on the radio too, which is deserved, it should have peaked higher than No.8. Thinking It Over I loved too though, I think that was a great, understated debut - just a catchy and surprisingly cool garage track. What Would You Do? and Chain Reaction I remember fondly from the time. The latter is a bit of a pointless retread but they did update it well with those Safri Duo-esque drums, and weirdly the song reminds me of getting my BCG injections at school, as it was playing while I was waiting in line. That Elton song is top quality as well, another that should have been bigger.
September 8, 2024Sep 8 Author Thanks everyone for continuing to follow - advance warning that I’m thinking to pause this thread at the end of 2001 which is now only a few batches away, so there’ll be plenty of time to catch up!
September 8, 2024Sep 8 Gosh, a couple of 'big in Germany' songs in the next batch. Sarah Connor has been a superstar there for over 20 years and still racks up the hits now. It's funny she only crossed over a couple of times here, and I wouldn't call Let's Get Back To Bed Boy one of her finer moments. It's ok though. And that Right Said Fred song was huge there too, it's a bit naff but catchy. Fat Lip was another pop punk classic - there were so many around at that time. Sad timing to see Sven Sven Sven pop up, quite a curious little top 10 hit as I'm not sure it was even during a big football tournament when it charted. I really like Jo Breezer's Venus and Mars, I forgot all about it for years but came across it again a couple of years ago, it is very breezy pop so suits her name. ---------- Agreed that In The End is the best of that next batch, probably one of the greatest songs of its genre, so passionate with a mega chorus. Drawing Rings Around The World was another quality song from Super Furry Animals, they should have had more success during this era! I was quite captivated by The Streets' debut album and most of those songs still sound really fresh today, including Has It Come To This? I agree with the You Rock My World review, it's a very slick production indeed but kind of meanders otherwise...in fact I can barely remember the verse melody at all without looking it up. I was very shocked it didn't get to No.1 though, I thought it would on name alone. ---------- I wouldn't say I love any of the next batch but I'm A Slave 4 U seemed like quite a slick and unexpected reinvention for Britney. And One Night Stand was a decent single from Mis-Teeq, moving away from garage for the first time. Halfway Around The World felt like a real underperformance, it's kind of phoned in Scandipop, I wouldn't say I love it. Sambuca I don't really care for but multiple times a year I have the intro in my head 'W-i-d-e...', and it felt a lot bigger at the time than it ended up being. Afroman was not for me, there were some really crap No.1s at the end of 2001, novelty ruled the day for a while, which is weird because the world felt quite gloomy immediately post-9/11 from my recollection, maybe this stuff was good escapism? The Brian Harvey track is really awful. ---------- Weezer is my favourite of that next batch, that definitely should have been bigger but at least has a big legacy. It was on so many film soundtracks around that time, it's just so jolly. Rock The House was another decent single from Gorillaz, I really like the instrumental hook. Gabrielle had veered onto autopilot for the token Greatest Hits single, as many artists do. Shame she went backwards with a boring song like this because Out Of Reach and Rise had been so special. That Five song is a bit laughable in its attempt to signpost the end of their career. The production on it and the vocal mastering actually sounds like a dated demo to me, the bridge melody is quite nice I guess though. I'd rather they ended with a party anthem like the sort they were known for than a ballad this pedestrian though. We Fit Together is awful, I don't know how it was greenlit as a single. ---------- The last batch is very good I loved Would You Be Happier, surprisingly poppy for The Corrs - even moreso than the In Blue album which surprised me - but then it was only a Greatest Hits single. A rather forgotten track in their catalogue though. I also really loved That Day - great frantic vocal delivery in the verses by Natalie. And Rapture is such a great, hypnotic kind of dance track, good memories of school from that song. I actually like both the original I'm Real (especially the intro) and the remix, but they really have nothing in common at all. Also strong are Bohemian Like You (such a good singalong track), Fallin' (a classy stellar debut single), Livin' It Up, Waiting and Party Hard (another rock classic from the time). I can't even remember Stay With Me which shows how much I must have thought about it when I loved Angelic's first two hits. I didn't buy it like I did those anyway.
September 8, 2024Sep 8 Author 2 big classics right at the top but “Pagan Poetry” is a wonderful discovery and is not far behind. 9 Daft Punk Harder Better Faster Stronger Another brilliant record from them, built around a riff sampled from a 1979 track: I love how the melody darts around 9 The Strokes Last Nite Their signature song to this day and still quite electrifying, the way it tells a story but becomes more and more agitated 8 Bjork Pagan Poetry This really has an aura of witchcraft and incantation about it backed by a twinkling harp: a spellbinding and artistic track 8 The White Stripes Hotel Yorba 1st hit for this US rock duo: an energetic and foot tapping country style number but you can see their artistic potential 7 Depeche Mode Freelove Their 3rd Top 20 this year and another very good value single from them: this is their usual moody and pulsating fare 7 Groove Armada My Friend There are various samples in this and it uses the vocals melody from "Best Friend" by Brandy: I find this works very well 7 Cher The Music's No Good Without You Her only Top 10 so far this century and this is a really compelling disco style track using the "Believe" auto-tune technique 6 Bubba Sparxxx Ugly 1st hit for this US rapper with a rather brash but fun and catchy track including a cheeky "Get Ur Freak On" interpolation 6 Blue If You Come Back 913th #1: not in the "All Rise" league but very nice: a strong and expressive pop song and good clear lead vocal from Lee 6 Blu Cantrell Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops!) 1st hit for this US singer: I like the quirkiness and individual character though it doesn't grab attention enough to be great 5 So Solid Crew They Don't Know Like "21 Seconds" this has interesting parts from various group members, but this lacks a strong chorus to bring it together 5 D12 Fight Music One of their best hits as it doesn't have the rough singing or childish elements of others, but like an inferior "Lose Yourself" 5 Delerium Featuring Rani Underwater Last original Top 40 for them: this is nice but a fairly standard trance track without quite the magic of earlier hits for me 4 Ladies First Messin' 1st of a couple of hits for this garage girl group and not bad but it sounds like a Mis-teeq imitation with less strong material 4 Beverley Knight Get Up Her 1st hit for a while and it's fine but a fairly token ska RnB type song: as is often the case she's better than the material 3 Destiny's Child Emotion A slightly slushy Bee Gees cover bringing to a crashing end their run of great singles: this is nicely sung but unnecessary 3 Embrace Make It Last This is very typically Embrace: soft, mellow and nicely performed with a sweet tune, but so safe and bland it's frustrating 3 Artists Against Aids Worldwide What's Going On? The "Perfect Day" format with some nice individual contributions, but this charity single doesn't have the impact it needs 2 Lighthouse Family (I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be) Free/One Their only Top 10 this century with a mash up of 2 covers: this feels rather like having a sing song round the campfire 2 Reel Lift Me Up 1st of a couple of hits for this Irish folk pop band: beyond being obviously this genre there isn't a lot to this and it's twee 1 Westlife Queen Of My Heart 912th #1: there's something very cynical feeling about this chart topper: I'd expect a machine to arrive at something like this gAjR4_CbPpQ TOypSnKFHrE 2001 Week 48: #1033 01/12/2001 S Club 7 Have You Ever 1 {1}-2-3-7-6-7-9-23-35-56-45-37-46-61->14 #1034 01/12/2001 Riva Featuring Dannii Minogue Who Do You Love Now? September 9, 2024Sep 9 I loved Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops!) when it came out. Great to see it get a decent score here.
September 9, 2024Sep 9 I was so sure I had charted Daft Punk I had to open my 2001 charts to check if my database was lacking - but it never charted for me! Bizarre, so it's an official 2/10 from me but really it's a 5/10 at least. :o Last Nite a 7/10, good, but The Strokes' classic for me was still to come. Pagan Poetry didnt chart, so 2/10. sorry! The White Stripes' Yorba, another 7/10, good track. Freelove a 4/10 Depeche track, and one I've forgotten how it goes. Groove Armada another 7/10, is anything getting a higher grade this batch?! Yes, Cher is, 9/10 and a great dance tune from when autotune was groundbreaking rather than obligatory, cliched and worked to death on a weekly basis. Bubba only one charting track for me. Ugly wasnt it. Hit Em Up Style was a long-runner for me, though it didnt go top 10, but I'll stick with 8/10 tho it really outdid some top 10's and it stays in the memory from hanging around. Fun! For example the other Blue peaked higher but did less well, If You Come Back also gets an 8/10. So Solid Crew had one chart hit for me. It's still not turned up yet though! Fight Music also DNC, so D12 can have a So Solid 2/10 too. Ladies First. A polite suggestion, but another DNC from me. Ditto Delerium. Bev Knight invariably charts for me though, so a fairly modest 4/10 for Get Up, and less memorable than the Destiny's Child plodding massacre of the fabulous Samantha Sang/Bee Gees song Emotions, which gets a 3/10 and that's generous! What's Going On is a flawless classic song, it's difficult to come out of a cover without some kudos, and the intent behind this version was worthy AIDS was still a death sentence for many, many in those days, and so it turns out its the top track of the batch for me. A charitable 9/10 but it's not of course Marvin Gaye-quality. Lighthouse Family on t'other hand grab a 6/10 for their covers. Reel means nowt to me, and Westlife would usually be hovering around 3/10. Queen Of My Heart, though was the first of only 4 top 10's for Westlife in my charts, so a 9/10. It might be formulaic, but at least it's not a groaning dreary ballad. I may have been so relieved that they didn't churn another one out that I over-rated it a bit, and the follow-up even more - and of course it was the beginning of the end for the chart-topping run. Too much change for their fans to take....
September 9, 2024Sep 9 'Queen Of My Heart' is absolutely vile :puke2: Even by their standards I thought that Cher song was an incredibly poor comeback, especially when she had 'Song For The Lonely' waiting in the wings (which didn't even get a proper release here!) Top track from The Strokes though! And I think that's probably my favourite Blue song (of a very limited pool admittedly)
