'Talk Of The Town' is another great one from The Pretenders and an excellent addition to the Top 10 alongside 'Call Me'

Call me and Talk of town are both fantastic

Crazy how Pretenders had a #1 in Jan and 3 month later they're back with a brand new single already,

as opposed to milking the debut album a bit more or re-releasing one of their early singles like Kid

Call Me is another 10/10 track from Blondie, absolutely love it. I think it's their last one for me though (well in these threads anyway, there's one great track still to come in the 90s one obvs)
Another good one from the Pretenders there, quite the wait for the album though from when ‘Brass in Pocket’ was released!

You not like ‘The Tide is High’?

Call Me is good, but not as good as Atomic. Didn't know it was produced by Giorgio Moroder, doesn't really sound like his style.

Interesting to see Detroit Spinners and Liquid Gold do so well showing 70s disco was very much still alive in the spring of 80!

I had categorized the Detroit Spinners song as soul, specifically 60s soul revival, not disco!

I like this #31 hit (World of Water by New Musik) from the time maybe the first track to use pitched vocals:

Can't find much else I know but it was a reasonably big time for heavy metal/heavy rock with Saxon, Whitesnake and Judas Priest singles making the UK top 20 at around this time : the so-called 'New wave of British heavy metal'

26TH APRIL

Blondie rise to No 1 with "Call Me" though sales wise it improves only moderately to 82,000 copies last week but that was enough to overcome the outgoing No 1 from Detroit Spinners which slides to No 3 on sales of 62,000, Blondie were of course only at No 1 7 weeks ago with "Atomic" and are therefore the first act to achieve multiple chart toppers in the 80s, but are also the first act since The Beatles in 1969 ("Get Back" and "Ballad Of John & Yoko") to have chart toppers so close to each other! The nearest challenger ended up being "Geno" by Dexy's Midnight Runners which climbs 12-2 to become their biggest hit, eclipsing the No 40 peak of debut "Dance Stance" earlier this year, it sold 69,000 in the process.

"Geno" is of course a tribute to US singer Geno Washington, if it makes No 1 it will be the first chart topper to be about a popstar since The Beatles in 1969 "The Ballad Of John & Oko" funnily enough- spooky.

Also new to the top 10 (and continuing the Beatles theme) is old timer Paul McCartney with "Coming Up" the first release from his second solo album "McCartney II" which is due for release next month and provides him with solo back to back top 10 singles for the first time in his post Beatles/ Wings career. It also records the biggest climb within the top 75 rising from 62-7 (39,000)

There are no other new entries in the top 10 this week but David Essex manages to move 9-6 with "Silver Dream Machine" though his sales improve only marginally to 49,000 and both UB40 (4) and Dr Hook (5) hold in last weeks position though both are dropping sales wise with UB40 selling 61,000 and Dr Hook 52,000 and both should tumble swiftly next week.

Everything else is heading southward as Liquid Gold dive 3-8 (39,000), The Pretenders drop one (38,000) and Madness fall back three spots (35,000)

1- CALL ME- Blondie (82,000)

2- GENO- Dexy’s Midnight Runners (69,000)

3- WORKING MY WAY BACK TO YOU- FORGIVE ME GIRL- Detroit Spinners (62,000)

4- KING- FOOD FOR THOUGHT- UB40 (61,000)

5- SEXY EYES- Dr Hook (52,000)

6- SILVER DREAM MACHINE- David Essex (49,000)

7- COMING UP- Paul McCartney (39,000)

8- DANCE YOURSELF DIZZY- Liquid Gold (39,000)

9- TALK OF THE TOWN- The Pretenders (38,000)

10- NIGHT BOAT TO CAIRO- Madness (35,000)

Geno I kinda like but not a super favourite

the Paul Mac one is the definition of a very very very annoying song

Awww I like 'Coming Up' with that quirky, high pitched vocals. They used a live version for the US market though with more standard vocals (and that did better even going to no.1 there).

'Geno' is pretty good fun.

'Call Me' is a fine track but not as good as 'Atomic' (but nothing really is tbh)

'Silver Dream Machine' is a catchy little song which never hear nowadays. Think would work better with a different vocalist mind (sorry David Essex!)

I’m struck by just how much better the artwork to Call Me is than pretty much anything else in the thread so far

(Although the cover for Turning Japanese was also good)

I'm glad someone else seems to like this- I agree it is largely forgotten but it's rather a nice little tune!

Me as well, I liked Silver Dream Machine at the time. Geno is a very good song from Dexys and I don't mind Coming Up but it's not a particular favourite from Paul McCartney.
I like the McCartney one sounds different with the vocals and funky production. When does Brit Funk replace disco and make its mark? Love ‘Geno’ is it just me or does it sound like something from The Specials?

In 2010 year Samantha Fox and Sabrina recorded a cover version of Call Me.

Obviously not to compared to the original but I do enjoy the cover. And the performers are indeed also very talented in, at least, four natural ways.

'Coming Up' is one of Paul's best. With the effects it sounds like it's being played down a phone line though

'Geno' I used to group in with the ska/2-tone movement because of the brass instrumentation, but its actually more 60s retro soul revival. I have listened to Geno Washington and The Ram Jam Band's most popular track on youtube called Michael to appreciate the influence behind the track.

When does Brit Funk replace disco and make its mark?

Probably not until 1981 and there was also American post-disco.

What’s an example of American Post Disco?

I think post-disco is more electronic
