July 27, 2024Jul 27 Author Tbh it’s a chart forum, if people aren’t curious enough to find out the background info themselves, they’re not going to be taking part in the rate in the first place :) I mean I could just post the Wikipedia article for each song but I don’t want to patronise anybody.
July 27, 2024Jul 27 I think a nice idea for these would be for people to write a little bit about why they like their favourites when they send the votes - it could be entirely optional but it does make the results a little more personal and interactive without putting all the responsibility on the host Of course there’s nothing stopping us all from doing that in our comments here regardless
July 27, 2024Jul 27 I really enjoy these rates with or without commentaries and I know how much work it is to do write ups on top of the results. That’s why I felt I needed a long break after the Beatles one. I’d much rather we had lots of these polls covering many different acts with slightly lighter touch hosting than them not happening because it’s too much commitment. So thanks very much Ed for doing this, and Severin I’m sure he won’t mind if you reply with some commentary. :)
July 27, 2024Jul 27 Author Well, I’d agree - forums like this should be about personal subjective discussion rather than reposting easily Google-able factoids. None of us need our hands holding :)
July 27, 2024Jul 27 It is totally up to the host how they do the rate to be fair. I do enjoy commentaries but appreciate they can be time consuming. I do always try to discuss the tracks I enjoy and read the thread to see others' views, and that's why I think it's good the rates happen at all to allow this discussion. Anyway, Vertigo should be top 10, the peak of U2 silliness and epicness.
July 27, 2024Jul 27 Every time I do write ups I think no on wants to read my crap ramblings  so it’s up to the host tbh.
July 28, 2024Jul 28 Electrical Storm would have gotten trickle points from me and Hello, Hello, Hello, Vertigo would have done wello, for me so consider both a bit higher  Opinions? I think it's much harder trying to stop me giving an opinion or nostalgic anecdote  If it's not been obvious so far I tend to prefer uptempo U2, and am not so big on ballad U2, bar a couple of obvious exceptions.

July 28, 2024Jul 28 Author Buzzjack’s Top 12 U2 Tracks (in alphabetical order) are - Beautiful Day The Fly Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For Mysterious Ways New Year’s Day One Pride Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own Sunday Bloody Sunday Where the Streets Have No Name With or Without You
July 28, 2024Jul 28 Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own feels out of place to me and I'd happily bin off Beautiful Day myself, but otherwise probably the obvious contenders
July 29, 2024Jul 29 Miss Sarajevo  Finally my second placed song falls, it’s done really well to get that high though so happy with that result. I bought it at the time and did like it, but it’s only in the past five years or so that I’ve come to realise just how good it is, the Pavarotti part is really beautiful and definitely lifts the song. Agree with Severin that SYCMIOYO feels out of place, it’s okay but definitely nowhere near top tier. Hope it doesn’t last much longer.
July 29, 2024Jul 29 Sometimes You can't... shouldn't even be top 20, their weakest #1 ok-ish top 12 otherwise but some jewels have been lost along the way Stay actually deserved top 10 imho, one of their best Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses is also a classic U2 ballad. Achtung Baby is their best album imo, almost every song could have been a single. Edited July 29, 2024Jul 29 by Bjork
July 29, 2024Jul 29 Agreement from me too about SYCMIOYO, I'd also add Mysterious Ways and replace them with Even Better Than The Real Thing (nobody has mentioned the fabulous remix which was also a hit) - I honestly love the rock and dance versions, both - and maybe Vertigo as it was so close to top 12. Miss Sarajevo is classy.
July 29, 2024Jul 29 Well I've just lost two songs I rated above it, so by that logic it won't be long (and a few others must like it!) Very happy with top 15 for 'Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses', the lyrical imagery makes it special, and 'Stay (Faraway, So Close!)' - even if it's become a vehicle for Bono to shoutout whichever location they're performing it from on tour - also has huge emotional power.
July 29, 2024Jul 29 For me, Miss Sarajevo is well ahead of the rest. The production, lyrics and vocals are all fantastic. I'm pleased to see it finish as high as 13th.
July 29, 2024Jul 29 Agreement from me too about SYCMIOYO, I'd also add Mysterious Ways and replace them with Even Better Than The Real Thing (nobody has mentioned the fabulous remix which was also a hit) - I honestly love the rock and dance versions, both I did originally suggest the remix being listed as well, since it charted separately from the original (and actually charted higher too) but it wasn't included. Personally, I can't bear the remix so I'm not unhappy about it.
