Everyday it’s like there’s an even worse stat or chart position announced

I can imagine she must be feeling pretty bad now though as there’s no dressing around that this has arguably been the worst choice she’s made to date within her career.

I think it's perhaps level pegging with 'Small Talk' in how it torpedoed any goodwill/momentum she may have had.

Not really been keeping track of this but it sounds like she’s in that awkward place where she’s been around too long to be seen as current or relevant, but not long enough yet to be a big nostalgia act who people remember from when they were kids, so in other words she’s neither Olivia Rodrigo or Avril Lavigne. The Pet Shop Boys had this same problem in the late 90s/early 00s when no one outside their fanbase cared about their new material, the tours were selling poorly and their big attempt at a west end musical had to close early after lack of ticket sales and they later admitted they almost threw in the towel and gave up around that time, until later in the 00s when they won a Brit award and transitioned successfully into a legacy/National Treasure act who pack out venues again, even if few casual fans know any of their stuff from the last 25 years.

Having just read the BBC News article about this it’s all seeming a bit cruel right now like people desperately want her to fail, I hope she emerges from this in the future even if she’s stuck just singing her 2008-2017 material until the end of time from now on.

That's partly the case, probably, but she did have some goodwill behind her few months ago. Now her catalogue streams have also dropped because of the bad press and she has done it herself and has no one else to blame. All she needed was a good pop song not produced by Dr. Luke.

I think there’s more of an element of people actively *not* wanting her to do well now as well. I mean I wasn’t ever necessarily a stan but I don’t think she was ever given this amount of bad publicity and backlash ever like even including Witness era.

I still feel a little bit convinced as well that she likely was warned against this and had several people probably advise her not to team up with Luke, and then again not to release this single and that video but I feel like she’s kind of dictated this assuming everyone else would be wrong.

I'm sure her label and team probably would not have gone ahead with this (and seemingly INVESTED in a big budget video) if they didn't think it was a stroke of genius. I feel like people don't want her to do well because she's worked with Dr Luke, but again, alot of these people are people that are perfectly content listening to Doja Cat, Kim Petras etc.

Kesha seems to have been the only artist (that I can see) that's made any vague comment about this release and it's link to Dr Luke. I think it's more a combination of negativity surrounding that (which I still can't rack my brains about - again, I'm not condoning sexual violence etc, there just isn't the evidence, and Kesha is the only artist that's come forward regarding that in particular, that I'm aware of) and it being unable to gain traction due to being seen as a weaker retread of her previous material (which again, I don't see, but that part is wholly subjective).

Waking up to these articles from BBC News & The Independent about her flopping and I can't help but think some PR team is pushing these stories against her again. How is it newsworthy for the BBC that a woman who has only had 1 top 40 song in the last 5 years missed the top 40 again?

This is where these things fall into just being plain hateful. It's not about disliking the song, it's not about disliking Dr Luke, it's about taking pointless jabs at Katy and it completely baffles my mind that she evokes such a feeling that makes these articles and this obsession necessary. This is just... not news.

I also don't think the general public dislike her, I just don't think they care about her anymore (which renders these articles even more pointless). I doubt most people even know who Dr Luke is - most of the gays I went to say 'And Juliet' with 2 weeks ago had never heard of Max Martin and one of them was a big Britney fan

I worked at a graduation night out last night, which was mostly made up of like 18-23 year olds, and they were SCREAMING Teenage Dream and Hot N Cold, the former being one of the songs that got the biggest reaction of the night. But, I doubt if you asked any of those people "do you still listen to Katy Perry?" if they'd say yes.

Obviously, I adore her, but she doesn't have the same shocking pull of Lady Gaga or Nicki Minaj, who have that nostalgia AND they have a reason to keep you interested in their future proceedings. She doesn't have the legacy of a Kylie. She's just a gorgeous American girl who made great teen-friendly pop songs but present teenagers have Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan to fill that void right now, not a woman approaching her 40s. It's the same reason Gwen Stefani never made the jump when she returned. There'll always be popstars to fill the void and unless you have something super stand out about you, you'll get lost if you slip enough times/go away for long enough.

100% agree. People just don't like her and ENJOY watching her fail, it's sad to watch.

You're probably right tbh. That has no business being on the bbc at all. People don't even care about the charts these days.

It’s very reminiscent of the press’s treatment of the solo Spice careers, any opportunity to jump on them as “failures.” I remember when Ride It got an article to say it was only the 130th (or around there) best selling single of the year, what a flop, blah blah blah… and I thought, but what about the 131st best seller why is it this one got singled out and not that? Same with Victoria Beckham “flops at #2” despite selling 180k first week sales. The press really are vile when they have an axe to grind for whatever reason it is.

how do people not know who max martin is when he literally curated much of the mid 2010's pop landscape I-

And others going solo are HUGE if they debut at 2, like Juwrin Whinealake etc!!

The press love to tear down highly successful and powerful women the moment their sales decline. Genuine question, did Justin T get as much crap after his Everyflop I Thought It Was album??

Nope, barely a peep. Just a feq arricles from people who KNEW he built his career on tearing down women's bigger and better careers. The rest werwn't interested
