FAQs

What is streaming? What are the chart rules regarding streaming?

For streaming and chart rules related FAQs read this thread.

How many streams equals one download sale?

100 plays if you are on Spotify Premium, or 600 if you are using the ad-supported free tier. However you cannot simply play a song that many times in one day to give it one sale, you are limited to 10 plays per day in terms of what counts to the chart. The number changes to 200 or 1200 plays when a song moves to ACR. For more information on the rules of ACR see this thread.

How much does streaming contribute to the chart?

Streaming contributes over 90% to the singles chart as a whole. Spotify counts for at least half of this, with Apple Music and Amazon also big contributors. YouTube is also big however most of YouTube's streams are at the free tier so won't count for as much.

Why is my fave not doing well?

Is it being promoted on a major curated playlist, and/or going viral on TikTok? If it isn't, it's unlikely to really take off! Hot Hits UK is the biggest of these playlists on Spotify from a UK standpoint. The playlist usually updates itself to include breaking hits once or twice a week, though there is no guarantee that your fave will get a place on the playlist. Also, the UK Top 50 is a largely followed playlist and that songs often experience a 'top 50 effect', when they enter the top 50 and get the additional exposure of being on the playlist. Often sales hits don't cross over to being streaming hits, this is usually the case for songs with an older target audience, reality or campaign songs. Also keep in mind that it often takes longer for a song to take off on Spotify than it would on iTunes.

My fave didn't debut high and is falling already, does this mean they're flopping?

Not necessarily. Most songs debut relatively low as they aren't instantly well-known, and experience a sharp decline on Day 2 as they no longer have the promoted 'New Music Friday' effect. A lot of songs manage to recover through gaining popularity and additions to playlists. Exceptions to the rule of course come from massively hyped releases, such as the recent album impacts from Drake and Taylor Swift.

Spotify

How do I see today's Spotify chart?

To see the daily top 50 update on desktop, log in to Spotify, click 'Browse', then click 'Charts', then click 'United Kingdom Top 50', or click the link below. For the full top 200, use the link below to go to Spotify's website. You can also use the Kworb website which displays the data in an easier to read format and also contains additional information, however this is often out of date.

What are the most influential Spotify playlists?

Links to Spotify's top playlists are as below.

Hot Hits UK

UK Top 50

New Music Friday

Today's Top Hits

How often does the Spotify chart update?

It should update once every day, usually in the early afternoon - although on occasion there will be a delay.

What do the numbers mean?

The streaming figures cited in the daily chart are the number of streams each song received the previous day. Unlike the iTunes chart, Spotify is not a rolling chart so the numbers will only change once per day.

Apple Music

How do I see today's Apple Music chart?

You can use the link below to view the Apple Music top 100 through Kworb. If you have Apple Music, you can also view the top 200 by going to the Charts section and clicking on See All in the Top Songs section.

How often does the Apple Music chart update?

It like iTunes updates on a regular basis a number of times a day. No streaming figures are provided however, unlike Spotify.

Kendrick Lamar has released a video for ‘not like us’ so expect a huge boost next week probably back to top 10

Finally! And it's amazing!

Also, this is interesting...

I am starting to get a feeling that Sabrina is pushed in every way possible by the streaming platforms for some reason. Maybe it's just a case of making the big songs even bigger by bringing them up in every single search? Dunno.

Not all of it is organic it is coming up on my searches when I search Taylor Swift. I mean the marketing/pay out to Spotify is working for sure, but she’s lucky she has such a team pushing her material when before this era she wasn’t super successful to probably warrant it

I checked the same happens for me too. Great promotion obviously, but why her? I don't have anything against her, but obviously a bunch of businessmen at her record label had meetings and were like "We have 200 female singers signed to our label, and we're going to choose Sabrina Carpenter and give her the best promotion any pop star has ever had and make sure she's the next big thing".

I guess we'll never find out the truth why they chose her, but I really wish I could know, this kind of thing makes me really curious what is going on behind the scenes. But obviously they all have NDAs and that kind of stuff so they can't talk about it in public.

She’s strong on YouTube and apple too and some of her tweets get 300k+ likes, huge on TikTok too. But silly to think this is all the work of men in suits. We’ve seen the likes of Simon cowell try to push various artists and get absolutely nowhere

Katy really should've released today - next week she'll have Eminem to battle with which most likely results 3 spot lower debut.

I think her going up against Kesha would have been a mess online, I'd rather let them have their own moments to be honest. Eminem will get huge streams but there's not much crossover appeal online.

Apple by Charli new in the Top 200! Thought it'd only be a matter of time as it's gone viral on TikTok. Hope it can continue to climb even higher!
'Apple' is another track that I'm not crazy about from 'BRAT' but here for any manifestation of the era's ongoing success anyway (and might be a grower).

Spotify:

New Peak:

22. Quavo, Lana Del Rey- Tough

31. Charli xcx- 360

52. Chappell Roan- Pink Pony Club

77. Otis Redding- (Sittin' On) the Dock of the Bay

106. Adam Port, Stryv, Keinemusik, Orso, Malachiii- Move

120. LeoStayTill, Mr Reload It- Pink Lemonade (Str8 Reload)

121. AC/DC- Thunderstruck

166. Gracie Abrams- I Love You, I'm Sorry

Re-Peak:

1. Sabrina Carpenter- Espresso

New Entries:

176. Charli xcx- Apple

Re-Entries:

159. a-ha- Take On Me

161. The Beatles- Here Comes The Sun

164. Shakira ft Wyclef Jean- Hips Don't Lie

169. Billy Joel- Uptown Girl

178. Toto- Africa

179. Earth, Wind & Fire- September

183. Daryl Hall & John Oates- You Make My Dreams (Come True)

186. Daryl Hall & John Oates- Rich Girl

187. Taylor Swift- Lover

197. Queen- Don't Stop Me Now

198. Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell- Ain't No Mountain High Enough

2 new entries on Apple so far today:

147. Zach Bryan - 28

195. Morgan Wallen - Cowgirls (feat. ERNEST)

'Cowgirls' isn't a new release though, so I wonder why it's taking off here now? It's been a hit in the US + Australia for a while.

Can't say I expected Apple of all songs to be the breakout album track but fair play, it has grown on me, after initially being one of the ones I wasn't as fussed on (but still liked a lot).
