I would agree that Kylie is obviously a priority at BMG, as arguably their biggest artist. However, it’s clear everything is done on a shoestring budget to maximise profit for BMG & Kylie.

This! They maximize the album sales and put ALL focus on selling the product instead of creating hits. Most of the hit songs in today's music business come from left field or as a viral surprise, but the thing in common with them is that they click with public as individual songs. Nothing apart from PP has done that for Kylie.

Nice to see Tension II back up to 5 on Itunes UK and up to 6 on Apple Music Streaming

CD still 5 on Amazon Music current best sellers

nothing major but every sale counts

This conversation is a bit bewildering to me! The day after her 10th UK #1 album, and we're lamenting the state of her career? :o

The debate re: BMG as I said previously I can’t think of a better label for Kylie than them.

Looking at ‘legacy’ artists that are as long in the game (or longer) than Kylie none are producing constant #1 albums etc., in their main territories with major label backing.

Mariah (Epic/Sony), Katy Perry (Capitol), the Warner label are trading off Madonna’s legacy rather than bringing anything new to the table and the Interscope backed Lady Gaga ‘Harlequin’ couldn’t save it from being a global gigantic flop (film soundtrack or not).

There is lots of noise about BMG not getting distribution right for the new album in the US but tbh the fact it could’ve been a 17-out rather than a 50 something - out is not going to change the course of her career or American fortunes.

Kylie’s art direction nose dived after Kiss Me Once, DISCO and Tension album covers were terrible, the production on most of Golden and DISCO was bad. We only get 2 music videos for the albums. Vinyl and CD packaging is poor. I just feel like Kylie needs a fresh team of creatives around her, new ideas and inspiration.

A few comments.

BMG/promotion - Kylie is in the control seat. Every investment in videos, promotion etc ultimately comes from her pocket. She will be deciding how many videos to make and what the budgets would be. Long gone are the days when a 3rd or 4th single with a video will boost an album sales. It’s throwing good money after bad and if Kylie is nothing else, she’s savvy. Art direction will be all her. She’s not a SAW puppet being told what to do - she’s not being bossed around by executives, that’s not the way BMG works - she’s the lead.

As legacy artist in 2024, I’d say she has in down pat. Singles success are a bonus, but no longer the priority as not in her reach. It’s all about first week album sales and that number one headline. She knows she can manipulate the fan base with vinyls, tapes and variants. The fans buy, she gets her number one and the headlines are all positive. Never mind the sales drop in the second week. She’s got her number one.

My only real criticism is that I think she’s in danger of fatigue. Her die hards will love her no matter what. But the more casual fan like myself gets tired from too many releases and endless flogging of something. I don’t get excited any more, she’s always promoting something or collaborating with someone. I can barely watch an interview with her any more, she rarely says anything interesting. Wine, homeware, perfume, spec savers… when is enough too much? She’s addicted to fame but in the most humble and endearing way. I still wish her every success, I just get tired of her.

The only thing BMG has missed out on has been some single opportunities... not having CDs / Vinyls etc ready for first week, Thursday release dates etc but in terms of her albums they has given her more success than she has ever had chart wise, as a legacy act that is far more important at this stage in her career she is always going to have limited success with her singles, even Padam Padam was limited success not a huge hit (just for her standards now).

These are all great points.

Obviously I love and respect that she is still getting those #1 albums but especially the UK market is that selling 35k copies to 30k die-hard fans gives a better result than getting two million streams in a week. It's the system unfortunately and BMG embraces that, but in the large picture the question that needs to be asked is BMG the right label to push her legacy forward instead of maintaining it? The result would be pretty much the same if she was all indie (with less variants for charting purpose perhaps).

Also, the album is not in top 50 in the US according to Hits Daily Double so something went really wrong there when she also has the tour to promote...

All this! As much it’s frustrating for fans with singles I’d much rather BMG continued to focus on album success.

These are all great points.

I’m sure Kylie and her team have done their homework. The run of #no 1 albums proves the era is working. She obviously doesn’t need money, she just wants to be successful, or perceived as successful. I personally don’t know what other label could do better.

The US chart result is a shame. Is it down to vinyl availability, as I read somewhere? At the end of the day she’s still not big here. She can book TV spots and there’s so shortage of online outlets that will have her on, but she’s niche. Padam wasn’t a chart or radio hit, or even that big online compared to todays artists, you’d think it was a number one smash with the way she talks about it!

Am I the only person that can hear the similarity to Bad Romance in the “Diamonds” bridge?
She obviously doesn’t need money, she just wants to be successful, or perceived as successful.

I really don’t think this is purely what it comes down to.

Regarding money, making more of it surely helps to maintain the lifestyle to which she’s accustomed, that’s one aspect of it. She obviously doesn’t need it in the ordinary person sense of the word need, but nevertheless there’ll still be a need for it in her reality.

I’m sure her continuing to work in music (and other ventures) is about a lot more than just wanting success. I’m not saying that success and fame aren’t driving factors for her. However, passion for what she does, and the importance of feeling that her life has purpose, must strongly come into it!

I think kylie sets challenges for herself that she like to achieve, there is no doubt that she is an extremely savvy business woman which drives her on, finance of course plats a part but if she hasn't her money made by now she never will but equally her lifestyle is probably very expensive so she likes to keep the money rolling in.

BMG have been incredible for her and have kept her at the top where she belongs. But it's undeniable that things are done on the cheap and it's a shame because the quality control is lacking sometimes.

The tour is where I'm hoping money will be spent.

I wouldn't be too sure.......

If she can move all around the place like GB then go back to places she has already been a week later makes me believe it isn't going to be a complex set design ......

She will always have the costumes and dancers

I expect more Golden/Kiss Me Once than Les Folies/X........

Am looking forward to it whatever we get. Love a laser show with Dance Kylie
