Biography

On 1999's “My Name Is,” Eminem entered the public imagination with a mandate: “God sent me to piss the world off.” From his provocative early work to the redemption narratives of 8 Mile and beyond, he’s more or less stayed true to form, holding a mirror to the American psyche—and his own—with an incisiveness rarely matched before or since. Raised in working-class Detroit, the artist born Marshall Mathers in 1972 got his start as a battle rapper, reaching the ears of the then-CEO of Interscope Records, Jimmy Iovine, and future mentor Dr. Dre; only months before, he had been fired from his job as a line cook, where he worked nearly 60 hours a week to support his infant daughter—an origin story that set the tone for his career. Dark, funny, and frequently violent, his breakthrough albums (1999’s The Slim Shady LP and 2000’s The Marshall Mathers LP) established him as pop culture’s premier bogeyman, a bleach-blond devil traumatized by circumstance who rapped about killing everyone from his mentor to his mother with such ferocity and wit that you’d almost forget he had the wrong idea. The result was a sound that reached beyond hip-hop into the heart of suburban America: rap not as social reportage but as primal-scream therapy; punk for a generation addled by reality TV. Even as he's matured—fame, stability, sobriety, an Oscar (for the 8 Mile centerpiece, “Lose Yourself”)—he's retained his edge, taking shots at politics and society (2017’s Revival) with a frustration that's bordered on relentless. Still, however tough he's been on the world, Em has also tended to reserve his harshest words for himself, refracting his insecurities—about his family, his music, his cultural relevance—into verses that have only made him seem more human. Kamikaze saw him once again embracing his dark humor and knack for piling syllables. With production from Tay Keith and collaborations with Royce Da 5'9" ("Not Alike") and Joyner Lucas ("Lucky You"), the 2018 LP lives at the intersection of the new school and the retro. Em continued embracing the new generation with 2020's Music To Be Murdered By, an album featuring appearances from the late Juice WRLD, Young M.A and Don Toliver, cementing his status as a rap elder statesman who still had the tenacity of an up-and-comer. - Apple Music

Biography

More than mere performer, Bruce Springsteen is the embodiment of what we think of when we think of rock ’n’ roll. Born in 1949 and raised in working-class northern New Jersey, Springsteen melds the gut thrill of early rock and soul with the poetics of the singer-songwriter movement for a sound that doesn’t just describe the triumphs and sorrows of everyday Americans but spins them into myth. It’s a feat that elevated him from working musician to something like a national hero upon his arrival. Though best known for his arena-sized anthems, Springsteen actually varies his approach quite a bit, from the sweat-soaked grandeur of the E Street Band workouts on albums such as 1975’s Born to Run to the stark Dust Bowl folk of 1982’s Nebraska, embracing the nostalgic allure of rock while integrating his sound with synthesizers and Broadway-level showmanship (the latter evident not only in his marathon, tank-emptying concerts but also in 2017’s Springsteen on Broadway run). Tonally, Springsteen is just as hard to pin down, leavening his darkest, most politicized stories—“Born In the U.S.A.,” for example—with his most uplifting music, a contrast that has made him equal parts patriot and dissident, often blurring the line between the two. Or, as he himself put it in a press conference for his 2012 album, Wrecking Ball, “I have spent my life judging the distance between American reality and the American dream.” But while Springsteen’s celebrated examinations of contemporary social issues have won him numerous awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the National Medal of Arts, the past has always weighed heavily on his imagination. Some of his most vital work of the 21st century, like 2020’s Letter to You, finds him pairing decades-old compositions with new material, managing to look backward while also boldly pressing forward. - Apple Music

What is this Birds In The Sky trash? First time I’ve heard it

Wonderful to have Celine back. This is why we need ACR otherwise that would not have got in at 40. And at last a few new entries.

Biography

In some senses, Dominic Fike has never been exactly what he seems. When a multimillion-dollar bidding war erupted for his services in 2018, before there was any finished music available to the public, the rumors abounded: He was really a front for a crew of songwriters or other insiders. But in truth, there is no surprise, no twist: Fike is an oh-so-real product of the post-Post Malone world. Born in Naples, Florida, in 1995, of Filipino and African American heritage, the artist swerves between a mellow Jack Johnson beach vibe that suddenly shoots into Frank Ocean-style emotional brokenness. His deeply human 2020 album debut, What Could Possibly Go Wrong, put an end to any lingering doubts that he’s anything but a wonder. Fike asks himself, “What’s it like being famous?” on “Good Game” and sings about eating crisp-fried strips of succulent white meat in fancy hotel rooms on “Chicken Tenders.” What makes his lyrics charming is that none of the success seems real to Fike yet as he shyly emerges to explore this brave new world. Meanwhile, the music is fizzy, with the beats constantly shifting and dropping out abruptly. The true reveal is “Vampire,” where Fike sounds wary of night creatures, and on his way to becoming one. But make no mistake: Dominic Fike lives. - Apple Music
