That Nothing But Thieves record is a perfect example of a recent rock track that should've been a massive radio hit - if only the likes of Capital were willing to be a little less safe. I don't think a song like that would make their listeners turn over.

Yeah I completely agree with this. A rock song or two on the playlist wouldn't sound too out of place and it's not like the general public doesn't like a bit of 'Mr Brightside' or 'Sex On Fire'.

I wanted to do this for ages but here's a list of throwback tracks that Capital's been playing as of April 2021. I've only included tracks that haven't been played since 2018/2019 so no Ed Sheeran's C

Capital is mainly a pop and dance station really despite it claiming to be "hit music" - they don't play lots of the rap hits either. I don't really blame them for not playing much indie when Radio X exists, there's no real need for them to be varied when that Radio X playlist is less varied and less inspired than Capital's own playlist...!

Also worth bearing in mind that Capital host several dance shows in the weekend evenings and host shows from Ibiza during normal times in the summer. Plus the fact that their main events are the Summertime and Jingle Bell Balls, pretty much a pop equivalent of a festival that younger people can attend. I think its USP is pretty clear and they're not really obligated to play a variety of music (I get that it's repetitive and samey but I find that of many radio stations, the likes of Radio 1 and 2 are more in the minority).

As Acerben pointed out above it wasn’t always like this and it’s only been that way for the last decade and a half. I remember them playing The Darkness for example.

The main thing people are making the mistake of thinking here is that indie can’t be as pop as some Calvin Harris or Jason Derulo track.

Dividing up stations based on genre is wrong and leads to less variety being heard by groups of people which is bad for music and the charts imo. Playing an indie artist like Wolf Alice for example on capital now and again would expose them to a bigger audience which would be a good thing. UK radio has def become a lot more Americanised in the past twenty years and in turn more generic and audience and money centric.

I understand that capital is a pop station however capital (and hot hits) is the reason why young people these days see rock/alternative/indie music as old - even if it is a very commercial track. Hence why it isn’t doing very well in the chart as a genre itself. I so wish they playlisted more commercial rock/indie tracks on capital fm. One I think would sound great it’s Jake Buggs recent single as it did well on their “bigtop40” chart. They play listed the 1975 last year and it was so very refreshing to hear in between all the overproduced noise (It can make me get cranky). They used to absolutely love acts such as: Manic Street Preachers, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Suede, Richard Ashcroft etc. And they absolutely loved wherever you will go by the calling! I always imagine making a suggestion to global and getting people behind it however they don’t listen to people. I feel they should listen to their regular listeners and have some feedback like they used to listen a long while ago. Like a forum or suggestion box as such however it is 2021 and they would probably see this as a dated idea. It can get very frustrating with the lack of variety as radio x play older songs to absolute death and radio 1 aren’t commercial so it would be nice to have a huge commercial station with variety. Commercial radio stations can have more impact as they play certain songs more than radio 1.

Also there was absolutely no reason to “disqualify” dermott Kennedy’s “outnumbered” & maroon 5s “memories” last year they were both huge hits and I was flabbergasted to discover they weren’t playing these songs. Mind boggling!!

And capitals shows have very little point compared to many years ago. What is the difference between tuning in at 2pm and 6pm? Well there is only a different presenter and I don’t feel like they talk even a little bit these days , I get they want to play as many tunes as possible however I feel like they try to talk as little as possible all I hear is a song then a sweeper then a song and so on before a little sentence then cut to ads and repeat! Many years ago the shows used to have a bit of a point as they would have a bit of a different format each time. The only shows have an actual point are breakfast, weekender and the chart show (the methodology needs to be reviewed as it is too similar to download charts). The weekender is a massive improvement compared to a few months ago so I applaude them for that. And why did they get rid of throwback show? It was fun on a Wednesday to hear a few older songs even if they were similar songs every week.

Also I get capital want to play the most commercial capital type pop songs however it would be a so very good move if they started playing some songs in the 40 which they wouldn’t usually predictably playlist; they need to move with the times. I was impressed that they playlisted daisies by ashnikko a while ago. They are either late for certain songs or don’t playlist them at all even if they would sound great on capital. And also why do capital playlist dance songs for months on end? I can’t be the only one to notice this! They should have pop songs on longer but they insist on spamming a certain few dance song for almost a year even if there were bigger pop songs. I feel like capital are becoming very dancey lately.

Worth noting ATB is almost definitely on the playlist too, they're playing it a fair bit but it's not on the playlist page. Guessing they're swapping the Nick J push to This Is Heaven then? It's the better song so no complaints. Hopefully they've also added new Bieber for tomorrow

Has Capital and Heart stopped playing Ed Sheeran's Afterglow and Clean Bandit feat. ian diorr's Higher (Capital only) despite both tracks are on the Capital playlist? I haven't heard them for a bit.

This is for the last 2 or 3 weeks hence the clearout! I think I said it before but Your Love (9PM) has been there a while, they've only just added it to the playlist page. Gonna assume 34+35 was never actually removed and it was a mistake.

There's about zero chance of them touching something as rock-oriented as 'All You Ever Wanted' sadly.
Indeed maybe they will add some type of remix 😂. Capital really are laughable!

I agree! They can’t play any sort of slow song without playing a remixed version. Listening to it the other day and they were playing some remix of let’s go home together rather than the original lol.

It’s like every song has the same production and beat, turning us into zombies!
Why is it laughable to play songs that will appeal to their audience? Something like All You Ever Wanted really isn't Capital's thing. They're primarily a pop / dance station, I think it's pretty obvious by now?
exactly, every station has its target audience, it's the same for indie radio stations, X Radio or BBC6 won't play Steps or BTS and nobody is surprised

Technically BBC Radio 6 Music did actually play BTS last week when they decided to play pop songs on April Fools Day but that's a one-off I'm sure
