tlen - patnik

So... we teased a fun indie pop sound this time but that didn't quite pan out in the end! This was the song we originally tried:

...however, we lost out to daine by milliseconds, truly rotten luck 😭 here is a screenshot of the time stamps provided by our wonderful hosts in Skall:

Capture d'écran 2026-07-30 212611.png

This is only the second time we've ever been beaten to an entry, following 'Get This Right' by Koven way back in 2015, which eventually finished 3rd - while we DNQed.

The story didn't end there for daine, as after all that, she was vetoed! I attempted 'PQC' but three other posters instead tried her song 'Love Love (Love Love)'. We imagine this would have performed better than our choice but we had to go with the one we loved most. Never mind! It was time to turn our attention to a back up and we did a handbrake turn, from summer indie pop fun to a track with 'death' and 'existential' in its tags...! Very on brand.

We did not even know that Bulgarian post-punk music was a thing, alas, a YouTube crawl allowed us to discover the fantastic 'patnik' by tlen, also stylised as 'пътник' by тлен on streaming. We've unexpectedly gone a bit rock bloc with a build-up once again but this was too irresistible. We hope this back-up choice will find its fans! This can be found in slot 4 of semi 2.

Big fan of your entry this month!

Ah that’s amazing to hear! It might actually be my favourite song I’ve sent this year so far now, which is unusual for a back-up.

Here’s hoping it progresses to the final 🙏

Omg you actually did these cheeseblock

In an ideal world I would have one too hehe, of course I can't prove it but I listened to Dobago in full during my first listenthrough. Then at the SyncTube listenthrough I had to leave for some time as I was waiting for something and then it came, and I left the site open but took my headphones off. So yeah that one doesn't count.

Great entry btw, Jade! 🙏

12th place | 188 points

It was never going to be easy to follow up back-to-back top 10s, with a back-up entry at that, but we're pleased to report our Bulgarian post-punk song managed a respectable 12th place, with 188 points! Our representatives, tlen, actually spent a good chunk of the results in the top 10, so it was a bit of a shame to fall out towards the end, but we certainly cannot grumble at this finish - still our third best of the year so far. That 12th place is our 62nd top 20 result to date in 11 years of competing. We've also finally broken the tie for our most common position! Jadakissnia have now achieved twelfth place five times, as we previously got there with: Tearist - 'Headless' (BJSC 91), Vendredi sur Mer - 'Larme à Gauche' (BJSC 107), Oscillian - 'Ulysses 31' (BJSC 150) and Madeline Goldstein -' 1996 Expectations' (BJSC 170), prior to the current contest. Earlier in the competition, 'patnik' became our 98th qualifier to date (giving us a Q rate of 85.96%) so we edge ever closer to that landmark 100th qualifier! 'patnik' finished 8th in the semi final with 83 points.

We were delighted to witness Séyetana winning for the first time after 15 (!) years of competing. Their victorious entry, 'Caught In A Jam' by Portraits Of Tracy, received a lot of hype in the lead up to the results - so we were glad this song lived up to those expectations. It felt reminiscent to the increased buzz surrounding Kylienips' entry 'Sorry' by Meg Myers as that contest progressed, ahead of its win back in 2015. Jadakissnia gave 'Caught In A Jam' 3 points so we're glad to have supported the Séyetana victory in some way. Congrats again to them and we can't wait for their contest to properly get going with the semi finals soon! Our own favourite entry was 'bravado' by waist, which meant we awarded The Spodic Empire top marks for the first time. That post-punk/darkwave sound was instant ear candy for the Jadakissnian public. They finished 29th, which shocked us, as we thought it could be a potential top 10 for them! Robbed. Taking silver in our votes was Deandria's 'Freak Like Me' by Collide, a wonderful Kate Bush-esque beauty. We were familiar with Collide, as the leader of Jadakissnia previously sent them to the retro song contest! 'Freak Like Me' finished in 41st which is an appalling lack of taste, sort yourself out BuzzJack. At least it qualified though! Rounding off our podium was Elëdan with the captivating 'An Open Door' by Roly Porter. Thankfully, at least one of our top 3 finished in the top 20, as this placed in a respectable 18th.

Thank you to the people of Skall for a fantastic job hosting this edition.

See you next time! Thankfully we can confirm we weren't beaten to our first choice by milliseconds again. That would've seriously been rotten luck as they only have around 300 monthly listeners on Spotify. Prepare for 7 minutes of genre blending, with a largely ethereal trancey sound...

Jadakissnia have unleashed our longest entry of the year so far this month, but don't fret, it's merely 7:31 rather than half an hour. 'HEAVEN' stole my heart with its warm lyrics, ethereal vocals and trancey production - with a satisfying build. But it's not a typical trance song, instead blended with layers of other sounds. Australian artist Kidskin's Bandcamp page labels this song with the following tags: 'drone', 'electronic', 'euphoric trance', 'experimental', 'punk', 'dance', 'ebm' and 'synthesiser'.

Kidskin, aka Rahnee Bliss, feels really under the radar right now as she only has approx. 400 monthly listeners on Spotify. But hopefully more people will know her name in time! She's previously supported Eartheater and Smerz on tour; I can see why as her sound does feel like a good fit for their worlds.

We hope this will find enough fans to qualify 🤍 she has drawn slot 22 in semi 1.

Kidskin - HEAVEN

33rd place | 145 points

Jadakissnia's latest result wasn't exactly one to write home about, as Kidskin's 'HEAVEN' finished in 33rd place, with 145 points. This is our worst performing finalist of the year so far albeit still a preferable result to VIOLENT VICKIE's DNQ. However, this position was still significant for our nation, as 33rd was a unique finish. Kidskin's result means we've now achieved every final position between first and 37th! We need 38th and 39th now to complete the top 40, as we already achieved 40th with Tetrica's 'Brujería'. Kidskin was our 99th qualifier to date (ooh, so close to the big one) and performed remarkably well in the semi final, finishing in 5th with 81 points! We thought 'HEAVEN' would struggle to qualify so this was quite the revelation. That projection slightly stings but we're happy with the silver lining of a unique position all the same.

BJSC 188's champion was Neliönoir who now join us in the 3 winners club, a huge congrats to them! Their winning song was 'Bésala Mucho' by Tamara Flores & Tourist, which we knew pre-contest, so were able to support from the off. We contributed to the win with 4 points in a strong field. Our gold medal on this occasion was awarded to Land of DW's glorious 'Con Corazón' by Calva Louise, which was catnip for the Jadakissnian people, with its Spanish lyrics and dark guitar lines. This finished in a strong 13th place. The 11-15th zone continued to deliver as our silver medal went to the wonderfully weird Angine De Poitrine with 'Sherpa', which finished right behind Land of DW in 14th. Finally, our podium was rounded off with Sovarasma, who sent the striking 'Jaque' by Marina Herlop. Some of the vocal runs in this song reminded us of ROSALÍA, so this was hard to resist. They finished just above the Jadakissnian people, in 32nd.

Thank you to the people of Séyetana for your wonderful hospitality!

Devil's Witches - Porno Witch

Devil's Witches is a U.K. based project formed by multi-instrumentalist James Abilene, also known as Witchdoctor General, but has since welcomed several honorary members. This spooky artist name (as well as the 'witch' in the song title) comes at an apt time with Halloween just around the corner.

I discovered this song when I was looking for similar music to 'Venus in Furs' by The Velvet Underground, after falling in love with it all over again, when counting down my all-time favourites. That song is inspired by an S&M novella, so unsurprisingly, I came across quite a few similarly lewd songs and 'Porno Witch' really caught my attention.

'Porno Witch' is inspired by Mary Millington, who was an English model, escort and adult film actress who also ran a sex shop, selling consensual adult magazines. She faced depression and pressure from frequent police raids on this shop and sadly later took her own life in 1979, aged just 33. Devil's Witches aim to uplift women (with "witch" a term of endearment) and chose Mary as inspiration for this song, as her life "stands a testament to sexual freedom in a time where explicit pornography was a punishable crime". 🕊️

The short lyric portions of the song are as follows:

Playbird, Miss Bohrloch,

Forbidden pleasure

Your open eye

Over your shoulder

People try to put you down

Your generation

Brusied for

Selling paper

The song is otherwise largely instrumental and we were blown away by the sound of the in-your-face, fuzzy guitars. Devil's Witches use the tag 'doomwop' for this sound, which is heavily inspired by '60s and '70s psychedelic rock and doom metal. Indeed it's not actually a retro song and dates back to 2019 instead.

We hope this can be a special 100th qualifier but semi 2 is looking like a total blood bath, so we'll see. Devil's Witches can be found in slot #17.
